BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men’s tennis team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 6-3, today (Wednesday, April 16, 2008) in an OAC match at the “Pop” Collins Courts in Berea. Despite the loss, Yellow Jacket senior number one singles player James Daly (Akron/ Firestone) won his 101st career singles match.
The loss ended B-W’s 12-match winning streak and first dual match loss since February 24. The loss dropped B-W to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in the OAC. ONU improved to 13-4 overall and 8-0 in the OAC.
In singles play, Daly, the 2007 OAC Player of the Year, freshman No.5 player Matt Lachman (Cleveland Heights/ St. Edward) and freshman No.6 player Sam Burris (Wooster/ Senior) all won.
Individually, Daly, the winningest tennis player in school, OAC and Ohio men’s and women’s collegiate tennis history, won his 101st career match with a 6-2 and 7-5 victory versus ONU’s Micah Scott. For the season, Daly improved to 24-3 and 101-10 in his career. In addition, Lachman is now 17-5 and Burris to 19-5 overall.
In doubles play, ONU won all three matches. Despite losing at No.1 doubles, Daly, also the winningest men’s doubles player in school, OAC and Ohio collegiate history, has 87 career wins and an 87-15 career mark. This season, Daly and and his doubles partner, junior No.3 singles player Jim Kucera (Mentor) are now 20-4 overall. In addition and despite losing today in doubles play, the No.2 duo of freshman No.2 singles player Tyler Adams (Wheelersburg) and freshman No.5 player Matt Lachman (Cleveland Heights/ Lakewood St. Edward) are now 18-4 overall and the No.3 tandem of juniors Andy Redd (Archbold) and Zach Long (Ashland/ Senior) are 13-8 overall.
B-W ends both the week and regular season with an OAC match at Wilmington College next Saturday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m. The 2008 OAC Tournament begins next Wednesday, April 23 when B-W hosts a quarterfinal match at 3:30 p.m. in Berea.
