BEREA, OHIO -- The second-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College men’s tennis team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference arch-rival and top-seeded Ohio Northern University, 5-4, today (Saturday, April 26, 2008) in the Championship Match at the OAC Tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
With its loss, B-W ends its season at 20-5 overall. It marks the fifth time in the last six years that the Yellow Jackets have won 20 or more matches and had their 20th consecutive winning season. ONU is now 17-4 overall and advances to next week’s NCAA Division III National Tournament.
In doubles play, the No.1 duo of senior James Daly (Akron/ Firestone) and junior No.4 singles player Andy Redd (Archold) beat ONU’s No.1 duo by an 8-5 score, and the No.2 duo of freshman No.2 player Tyler Adams (Wheelersburg) and freshman No.5 player Matt Lachman (Cleveland Heights/ Lakewood St. Edward) beat ONU’s No.2 tandem by a 9-8 score with a 7-3 advantage in the tie-breaker. The two wins gave B-W a 2-1 lead entering the singles portion of the match.
In addition and for his career, Daly won his school, OAC and Ohio collegiate-record 91st career doubles match and is now 91-15 overall. This season, Daly and Redd compiled a 3-0 record and Adams and Lachman were 22-4 overall.
In singles play and with the match score tied at 4-4, ONU won the final match at number three singles.
For B-W, Daly, the 2007 OAC Player of the Year, and Lachman both won. For Daly, the victory was the B-W, OAC and Ohio collegiate-record 105th of his career in singles. He defeated ONU’s Micah Scott by the scores of 6-3 and 6-4 to improve to 28-3 this season and 105-10 in his career. In addition, Lachman is now 19-5 overall.
