B-W Men’s Tennis Team Beats Otterbein, 5-0, in OAC Tournament Quarterfinal Match

BEREA, OHIO -- The second-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College men’s tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival and seventh-seeded Otterbein College, 5-0, today (Wednesday, April 23, 2008) at the “Pop” Collins Tennis Complex in Berea in an OAC Tournament Quarterfinal match.

With its win, B-W advances to the OAC semifinals where it will face arch-rival and third-seeded Mount Union College on Friday, April 25 at 9:00 a.m. at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.  Top-seeded Ohio Northern University plays fourth-seeded John Carroll University in the other semifinal. The winners meet in the OAC Championship match on Saturday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. in Mason.

With its victory, B-W improved to 19-4 overall and has won 14 of its last 15 matches, including a 6-3 win versus Mt. Union on April 5 in Alliance.  With its loss, Wilmington is 7-8 overall and 3-6 in the OAC.

In doubles play, the No.1 duo of senior James Daly (Akron/ Firestone) and junior No.4 singles player Andy Redd (Archold), the No.2 duo of freshman No.2 player Tyler Adams (Wheelersburg) and freshman No.5 player Matt Lachman (Cleveland Heights/ Lakewood St. Edward) and the No.3 tandem of junior No.3 player Jim Kucera (Mentor) and junior Josh Long (Ashland/ Senior) all won.  For his career, Daly won his school, OAC and Ohio collegiate-record 89th career match and is now 89-15 for his career.

In singles play, Daly, the 2007 OAC Player of the Year, and freshman No.6 player Sam Burris (Wooster/ Senior) both won.  For Daly, the victory was the B-W, OAC and Ohio collegiate-record 103rd of his career in singles. He defeated Otterbein’s A. Tyler Stephen by the scores of 6-1 and 6-0 to improve to 26-3 this season and 103-10 in his career. In addition, Burris is 21-5 overall.

The winner of the OAC Tournament receives the OAC’s automatic berth to next week’s NCAA Division III National Tournament.
