BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men’s tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 9-0, today (Saturday, April 12, 2008) in an OAC match in Marietta. Highlighting the match was Yellow Jacket senior number one singles player James Daly (Akron/ Firestone) winning his 99th career singles match.
The win was B-W’s 11th straight and the Yellow Jackets have not lost a dual match since February 24. The victory improved B-W to 16-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the OAC. Marietta dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-7 in the OAC.
In singles play, Daly, the 2007 OAC Player of the Year, freshman No.2 player Tyler Adams (Wheelersburg), junior No. 3 Jim Kucera (Mentor), sophomore No.4 player Andy Redd (Archbold), freshman No.5 player Matt Lachman (Cleveland Heights/ St. Edward) and freshman No.6 player Sam Burris (Wooster/ Senior) all won in straight sets. As a sextet, B-W outscored Marietta, 72-7.
Individually, Daly, the winningest tennis player in school and OAC men’s and women’s tennis history, won his 99th career match with a 6-0 and 6-0 victory versus the Pioneers’ Ryan Callahan. For the season, Daly improved to 22-3 and 99-10 in his career. In addition, with their wins, Adams improved to 18-6 overall, Kucera and Redd each to 13-8, Lachman to 15-5 and Burris to 17-5 overall.
In doubles play, the No.1 duo of Daly and Kucera, the No.2 tandem of Adams and Lachman and the No.3 tandem of Redd and junior Zach Long (Ashland/ Senior) all won by perfect 8-0 scores and gave B-W a 3-0 lead entering singles play.
In winning at No.1 doubles, Daly, also the winningest player in school history in doubles matches, captured his 86th triumph. This season, he and Kucera are now 19-3 overall and for his career, Daly is 86-14. In addition to the No.1 duo, Adams and Lachman are 17-3 at No.2 and Redd and Long are 12-7 overall.
The resume Ohio Athletic Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio for a rescheduled match against Heidelberg College at 3:30 p.m. Then, B-W hosts OAC tennis arch-rival Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, April 16 at the “Pop” Collins Courts at 3:30 p.m. B-W then ends both the week and regular season with an OAC match at Wilmington College next Saturday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m.
