BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College, 9-0, today (Friday, March 21, 2008) at the River Oaks Racquet Club in Rocky River, Ohio. This was the OAC opener for each team.
With its victory, B-W is now 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the OAC while Muskingum falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
In singles play, B-W received straight set victories from senior number one player James Daly (Akron/ Firestone), freshman No.2 player Tyler Adams (Wheelersburg), junior No.4 player Andy Redd (Archbold), freshman No.5 player Matt Lachman (Cleveland Heights/ Lakewood St. Edward) and freshman No.6 player Sam Burris (Wooster/ Senior). The best singles match of the day was at the third position as junior No.3 player Jim Kucera (Mentor) won a three-set match against Muskingum's Shivtaj Singh, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8 tie-breaker) and 1-0 (12-10 in super tie-breaker). In addition, Daly's win a first singles was his B-W school-record 94th and improved his record this season to 17-3 overall.
In doubles action, the No.1 duo of Daly and Kucera, No.2 tandem of Adams and Lachman and No.3 duo of Redd and junior Zach Long (Ashland/ Senior) all won. The win by Daly and Kucera at No.1 improved their mark to 14-3 this season. The doubles win also was the school-record 80th of Daly's career, and combined with his victory today in singles, he now has a school career-record 174 overall victories.
With B-W’s win, Head Coach Brian Rector, the school’s all-time wins leader, improved his career record to 316-68, including a 130-27 mark in OAC play.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, March 25 when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to play OAC rival Heidelberg College at 3:30 p.m. The on-campus home opener is scheduled for next Saturday, March 29 when B-W is scheduled to host OAC rival Otterbein College at 1:00 p.m. on the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea.
