Mount Union Beats the BW Men's Tennis Team, 5-4, to End Yellow Jacket Win Streak at 14
BEREA, OHIO-- The Mount Union College men's tennis team defeated previous unbeaten Baldwin Wallace University, 5-4, today (Saturday, April 7, 2007) in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual match at the Paramount Tennis Club in Medina. The match was moved indoors due to cold and inclement weather.
With its win, Mt. Union improves to 14-3 overall and is 5-0 in the OAC. The Purple Raiders won their 10th straight match. With their loss, the Yellow Jackets ended a 14-match winning streak and fell to 14-1 overall and 3-1 in the OAC. The loss also denied BW veteran Head Coach Brian Rector his 300th career win.
In doubles, BW bulit a 2-1 advantage as the number one tandem of junior No.1 singles standout James Daly (Akron/ Firestone) and freshman No.4 singles player Zach Apperson (Zanesville/ Bishop Rosecrans) and the No. 3 duo of sophomore Zach Long (Ashland/ Senior) and senior Dan Mitoff (Lorain/ Admiral King) each won.
In singles play, Daly and Long were the lone winners as Mt. Union won four-of-six matches for its 5-4 victory. BW played without the services of No.5 singles standout Jim Kucera (Mentor) who is injured.
With his win, Daly is now 18-2 this season and 69-7 in his career in singles play and is 10 wins shy of tying Mike Wagner's (2000-2004) all-time school-record of 79 career wins. He has won six straight this season.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Columbus to play Capital University at 3:30 p.m. BW is home both next Thursday, April 12 versus Heidelberg College at 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday, April 14 for a doubleheader against OAC rival Marietta at 1:00 p.m. and against nonleague foe Malone College at 4:00 p.m. Al outdoor home matches are played on the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea.
