BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's tennis team remained undefeated and beat Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 5-4, today (Wednesday, April 4, 2007) at the River Oaks Racquet Club in Rocky River. The match was moved indoors due to cold and inclement weather.
In addition to beating rival JCU, B-W 18-year Head Coach Brian Rector '89 won his 299th career match and moved within one win of becoming the first tennis coach in OAC history, men or women, to win 300 career dual matches. Rector is 299-62 overall and has led B-W to three OAC Tournament crowns.
With its win, B-W improves to 14-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC. With its loss, JCU is 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.
In doubles, the Yellow Jackets wo two of three matches to build a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles matches. The No. 1 tandem of junior number one singles standout James Daly (Akron/ Firestone) and sophomore No.5 player Jim Kucera (Mentor) and No. 3 duo of sophomore No.6 player Zach Long (Ashland/ Senior) and senior Dan Mitoff (Lorain/ Admiral King) both won. With their win at No.1 doubles, Daly and Kucera are now 14-1 overall and have won 14 straight matches and are 14-0 in dual matches.
In singles play, Daly (Akron/ Firestone), freshman No. 3 player Andy Redd (Archbold) and Kucera each won. With the match tied at 3-3, both Redd and Kucera completed their victories at almost the same time to clinch the match. Kucera's win was deemed as the deciding match before JCU captured the final match of the day to make the final score 5-4 in favor of Rector and his Jackets'. With his win, Daly is now 17-2 this season and 68-7 in his career in singles play and is 13 wins shy of tying Mike Wagner (2000-2004) for the all-time school-record for wins.
The Yellow Jackets return to Berea on Saturday and play OAC arch-rival Mount Union College at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Courts at 1:00 p.m.
