Baldwin Wallace Beats Capital, 9-0, as Brian Rector Wins His 300th Career Match as Coach
BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University 18-year Men's Tennis Coach Brian Rector won his 300th career match today (Tuesday, April 10, 2007) as the Yellow Jackets defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 9-0, at the Beck Tennis Courts in Columbus. He is the first tennis coach, men's or women's, in the 104-year history of the OAC to win 300 career matches.
During his outstanding career, Rector has compiled an impressive 300-63 career mark, including a 125-26 slate against OAC opponents. He has led three Yellow Jacket teams to OAC titles and coached the only OAC team ever to finish its season undefeated at 22-0 in 2004.
With its win, BW improves to 15-1 overall and 3-1 in the OAC this season. With its loss, Capital falls to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the OAC.
In doubles, BW bulit a 3-0 advantage as the number one tandem of junior No.1 singles standout James Daly (Akron/ Firestone) and freshman No.4 player Zach Apperson (Zanesville/Bishop Rosecrans), the No. 2 duo of senior No. 2 player Ryan McCartney (Lorain/ Admiral King) and freshman No.3 player Andy Redd (Archbold) and the No. 3 duo of sophomore No. 5 player Zach Long (Ashland/ Senior) and senior No. 6 player Dan Mitoff (Lorain/ Admiral King) all won.
In singles play, Daly, McCarney, Redd, Apperson, Long and Mittoff all won.
With his win, Daly, this week's OAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, is now 19-2 this season and 70-7 in his career in singles play (a .909 winning percentage) and is nine wins shy of tying Mike Wagner's (2000-2004) all-time school-record of 79 career wins. He has won seven straight this season. In doubles play, Daly and Apperson improved to 2-0 this season and he has combined with two separate partners to win 16 straight matches this season.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Thursday, April 12 versus Heidelberg College at 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday, April 14 for a doubleheader against OAC rival Marietta at 1:00 p.m. and against nonleague foe Malone College at 4:00 p.m. Al outdoor home matches are played on the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea.
