22nd-Ranked Men's Soccer Team Beats Host Anderson (Ind.), 2-0, to Stay Unbeaten

BEREA, OHIO -- The 22nd-ranked (NSCAA -- National Soccer College Coaches Association) Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team stayed unbeaten and improved to 3-0 overall today (September 8) as it defeated host Anderson University, 2-0, in Anderson, Indiana. Tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 9), the Yellow Jackets travel to Adrian, Michigan to play Adrian College at 1:00 p.m. and for the second time in two weeks.  A week ago (Sept. 1), BW beat Adrian, 2-0, in the first round of the Tri-State (Ind.) University Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets, also ranked third in this week's NSCCA Great Lakes Region poll in NCAA Division III, got goals from junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Matt Pietro (Canfield) at the 6:35 mark of the first half and from sophomore forward Cory Kovach (Chagrin Falls/ Kenston) at the 78:38 mark of the second.   Senior All-OAC midfielder Alex Williams-Witzky (Marysville) assisted on both goals.

In goal, sophomore Alex Stavros (Copley/ Fairlawn) increased his scoreless streak in the net to 180 minutes this season as he did not allow a goal.  Stavros was backed by a strong Yellow Jacket defense which did not allow Anderson, now 2-2 overall, a shot on goal.  Overall, the Yellow Jackets outshot Anderson, 17-3, and outcornered their opponent, 5-2.

Following tomorrow's game at Adrian, BW plays at Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. and then goes to Ada Ohio next Fiday and saturday, Sept. 15-16 to defend its title at the annual Ohio Athletic Conference - Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Shootout at Ohio Northern University.  On Friday, BW plays Albion (Mich.) College at 3:00 p.m. and then faces Kalamazoo (Mich.) College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.  BW defeated Albion in the title game last year.
