Graf Scores Winner and Vandendriessche Twice to Tie Career Record as B-W Beats CWRU, 3-2

BEREA, OHIO – Senior  forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina) scored twice and junior Kirk Graf (Ashland) had the match-winner at the 86:53 mark as the Baldwin-Wallace College men’s soccer team erased a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 3-2,  tonight (September 14, 2011) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.

With its win, B-W, ranked seventh in the Great Lakes Region poll, improves to 5-1 overall and has won five straight.  With its loss, CWRU, ranked fourth in the region, falls to 4-1 overall .

The two goals by Vandendriessche, a three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference player, give him 36 career goals and ties him with B-W legend Jeff Schenk (1983-86) for the school-record. His four points give him 77 in his career and leaves him three shy of Tyler Leister (2007-10) for third on the all-time scoring list.  Schenk was in attendance at tonight’s game. Graf’s goal was his third.

CWRU opened the scoring at the 7:57 mark when O’Day  took a cross and beat the Yellow Jacket keeper for his sixth goal of the season. Junior midfielder Eric Erb was credited with the assist. The Spartans increased their advantage to 2-0 when O’Day tallied his seventh goal this season at the 18:40 mark following a cross from senior forward Vinny Bell. CWRU led 2-0 at the intermission.

Early in the second stanza, Vandendriessche scored his first goal at the 47:59 mark via a pass from junior Graf  to make the score 2-1. The goal was Vandendriessche’s 35th of his career.

With B-W being the aggressor, Vandendriessche tallied the equalizer and the career-record at the 63:18 mark during a scramble in front of the CWRU goal.

The Yellow Jackets next play on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1:00 p.m. in the first match of a men’s and women’s doubleheader at Grove City College of Pennsylvania. The B-W women kickoff at 3:30 p.m.B-W return home to play Allegheny (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Sept. 21 on the Tressel Field pitch at Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men’s and women’s soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a perfect 6-0 record on the line.
