BEREA, OHIO -- The seventh-ranked (www.nscaa.com Division III national poll) Baldwin-Wallace College men’s soccer team defeated St. Vincent (Pa.) College, 3-1, today (Tuesday, September 30, 2008) in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The Yellow Jackets improved to 10-0-0 overall, and continued their best start in school history.
B-W gained a 1-0 lead at the 22:04 mark of the game when senior midfielder Jim Synk (Strongsville) scored unassisted for his second goal of the year. The Yellow Jackets added to their advantage when junior defender Cory Weidner (Rocky River) scored following a corner kick at the 34:46 mark. Freshman forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/Senior) closed out B-W scoring with his team-leading seventh goal of the year at 71:30. St. Vincent scored their only goal at 89:01 off the foot of Rick Fec.
In goal for B-W, sophmore Zach Ryman (Casstown/Troy) faced 15 shots and made five saves to improve to 5-0 this season. Ryman had a save percentage of .830 for the game.
Baldwin-Wallace won the battle of shots, 30-15, and corner kicks, nine to four.
After 10 matches in 2008, Vandendriessche leads the team in scoring with seven goals goals for 14 points. He is followed by sophmore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/Munroe Falls), who has five goals and two assists for 12 points. In goal, the duo of Ryman and junior Russ Mika (Medina/Senior) have combined to keep B-W undefeated and are allowing just .89 goals-per-game.
B-W returns to action on Saturday, October 4 when it begins its Ohio Athletic Conference schedule against Mount Union College at 7:00 p.m. on the Tressel Field pitch at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
