BW Senior Goalie Russ Mika Named OAC Soccer Player of the Week
BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University senior goalie Russ Mika (Medina/ Senior) is this week’s Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Co-Player of the Week. He shares the honor with Andrew Shannon of Marietta College.
Mika, a 2008 ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV keeper, earned his accolade for leading the Yellow Jackets to a pair of shutout victories, at home against Heidelberg University (3-0 on Oct. 6) and at Otterbein College (3-0 on Oct. 10). During the week, Mika faced 22 total shots in 180 minutes of action, did not allow a goal and made nine saves.
Mika, who carries a 3.68 grade point average in finance and marketing, has started all 13 matches this season, faced 126 shots, allowed 11 goals, has a 0.93 goals-against-average and 46 saves en route to an 8-4 record with four individual and six overall shutouts. Most recently, Mika has spearheaded an eight-game Yellow Jacket winning streak that has included six shutouts and a 25-3 scoring advantage in BW’s favor.
For his career, Mika has appeared in 43 matches, covering 3,679:29 of playing time, allowed 48 goals for a 1.17 goals per game with 168 saves and 10 individual and 20 combined shutouts. With Mika as a member of its men’s soccer program, BW has a 42-22-6 record with a .643 winning percentage.
Mika and the Yellow Jackets, 8-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the OAC, will be back in action this Wednesday, Oct. 14 when they host defending OAC-champ Ohio Northern University, 9-3-1 overall and 3-0 in the OAC, in a game that will determine first place in the OAC on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
In addition, this Saturday, BW will host Muskingum University at Finnie Stadium in a game that will be taped ad televised on both Sunday, Oct. 18 and Monday, Oct. 19 on SportsTime Ohio (www.sportstimeohio.com). The game will air on STO on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. and on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
