BEREA, OHIO — Baldwin-Wallace College senior men's basketball player Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson High School) has been chosen as a 2003 National Basketball Coaches Association Division III third-team All-American. McCormick is the first Yellow Jacket All-American men's basketball player since Kevin Braaten (1993-96). Earlier this winter, McCormick was named as a third-team Verizon Academic All-American. The NABC All-American honor caps one of the finest careers in B-W history. Here is some information on Shawn McCormick:
GENERAL INFORMATION: Shawn McCormick is one of the finest players ever to play basketball at Baldwin-Wallace College. He was named as a 2003 NCAA Division III third-team All-American by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC).
Shawn ended his career third on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,865 points. He also had 535 rebounds, 218 assists and 172 steals in 103 career games played. He also shot 50 percent from the floor (694 of 1388), 39.9% from 3-point range (153 of 383) and 88% from the foul line (324 of 368). Shawn transferred to Baldwin-Wallace from NCAA Division I the University of Toledo after the Fall Semester of his freshman year. He sat out the Winter of 1998-99 and began play in 1999-2000. He did not play basketball at Toledo.
As a freshman in 1999-2000, Shawn led B-W in scoring at 17.6 points per game and was third with 5.8 rpg. He had a career-high 29 points in an 88-83 victory versus John Carroll University on January 29, 2000 in Berea. Shawn scored in double figures in 24 of 26 contests. He recorded three double-double performances (points and rebounds). He scored 20 or more points in 10 of 24 games. He earned second-team All-OAC honors.
As a sophomore in 2000-2001, Shawn had another outstanding season and was named second-team All-OAC for the second straight year. He was second on the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg. He scored in double figures in all 25 games played.
As a junior in 2001-2002, Shawn led B-W in scoring at 17.8 ppg., was second in rebounding (6.3 rpg.) and first in steals (43) and free throw shooting (74 of 80 for 92.5 percent). Shawn scored a career-high 31 points on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 in a 91-87 loss at John Carroll University.
As a senior, Shawn led B-W in scoring at 20.0 ppg. and 4.9 rpg. whicxh ranked second. He also leed the team with 49 three-pointers and tied for first with 50 steals. He scored a career-high 34 points in an 83-59 win against Edgewood (Wisc.) College in the first round of the Cactus Hoop Jam Classic in Pheonix, Arizona. (See honors below).
BASKETBALL HONORS AND AWARDS: In 1999-2000, Shawn was named to the all-tournament team at the Thiel (Pa.) College Tournament. He was also tabbed as an All-Ohio Athletic Conference second-team selection. Shawn was also named to the d3hoops.com All-Freshman team. In 2000-2001, Shawn was selected as a d3hoops.com preseason Division III All-American. He earned second-team All-OAC honors again. In 2001-2002, Shawn was tabbed as the OAC Player of the Week for his efforts against John Carroll (2/13/2002) and Marietta (2/16/2002) and earned first-team All-OAC and second-team All-Great Lakes Region honors. As a senior in 2002-2003, Shawn was named as a third-team All-American by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC). He was also selected as a first-team All-OAC selection, a unanimous first-team Academic All-OACpick, the Mike Gregory OAC PLayer of the Year, a first-team Verizon Academic All-District IV and third-team Verizon Academic All-American and is currently a nominee for Division III All-American honors. Shawn also earned OAC Co-Player of the Week honors for his effort at the Cactus Hoop Jam Tournament (from 12/27-30/2003).
