The Baldwin-Wallace College Men Beat OAC-Rival Wilmington, 97-90, in Double

Overtime, in Wilmington; B-W Wins Sixth Straight Game

BEREA, OHIO - Sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) scored 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds today (Saturday, January 8, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College, 97-90, in double overtime, at the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington. The victory was B-W's sixth straight. With its win, B-W is now 11-2 overall and 4-2 in the OAC. With its loss, Wilmington fell to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the OAC.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as five points at 25-20 with 6:13 left before halftime when Tori Davis scored on a layup. The Quakers would then respond by going on a 23-2 run to take a 43-27 lead during which they hit seven three pointers, including four by senior guard David Guy and three by freshman guard Billy Nelson. Wilmington made a total of 11 three pointers on 17 attempts in the first half and led at halftime, 43-31.

In the second half, B-W came out strong and went a 30-14 run to take a slim two point lead at 61-57 with 3:51 remaining in regulation. Wilmington then responded with its own 8-0 run to take a 65-61 lead with 2:10 remaining in the contest. The run was capped by two more three pointers from Guy. Wilmington led the rest of the way until junior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) drew a goaltending penalty to tie the game at 67 with 7.3 seconds remaining. Guy would then miss a three-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Yellow Jackets led by as many as six points at 75-69 when Tori Davis split a pair of free throws with 2:53 remaining. Wilmington would battle back again and tied the game at 80 on a clutch three pointer with 0.7 seconds left by junior guard Josh Rohrbacker. B-W would not have a chance to shoot sending the game into a second overtime.

In the second overtime, B-W jumped out a 95-86 lead, their largest of the afternoon when freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa.) made a pair free throws with 20 seconds remaining. Wilmington was unable to find an answer to the Yellow Jackets clutch free throw shooting as they made 13 straight down the stretch, 16-of-19 in overtime and 71.7% overall (33-of-46) to go on to win 97-90.

Tori Davis was joined in double figuers by his brother Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) who had 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/Holy Name) had 18 points including four three-pointers and seven assists and sophomore swingman Matt Marks (Boardman) came off the bench to score 17 points. B-W outrebounded the Quakers 46-37.

With his 13 points and 12 rebounds today, Thad Davis now has 1,603 career points and 824 career rebounds. He is now seventh on the Yellow Jacket all-time scoring list and fifth in rebounding.

Wilmington was led by Guy and Nelson who both tallied 18 points. Guy had six three-pointers, and Nelson had four from behind the arc. Also in double figures for the Quakers were senior forward Deon Short who had 16 and freshman guard Zach Broermann who had 15. Wilmington fell two three-pointers short of tieing its own OAC-record of 19 three-pointers in a single game that was set last season against the Yellow Jackets as they shot 17-of-40 from beyond the arc.

B-W will be back in action on Wednesday, January 12 when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in a key OAC game at he Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #13 vs. Wilmington

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Wilmington where it will take on Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College on Saturday, January 8, 2005 at the Fred Raizk Gymnasium.  Tip-off start is slated for 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its season-high sixth straight game as it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College at the Fred Raizk Arena.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 10-2 overall and 3-2 Ohio Athletic Conference record following a 74-71 victory against Mount Union College on January 5 in Berea, Ohio.  With their 3-2 OAC record, the Yellow Jackets are currently in fourth place in the OAC Standings.
        Wilmington enters this game with a 7-4 overall record and is 3-1  in the OAC. The Quakers had their Jan. 5 game against Ohio Northern University postponed twice due to bad weather.  Wilmington last played on January 2 when they beat Maryville (Tenn.), 80-72, in Wilmington.  The Quakers are in second place in the OAC Standings.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Wilmington Series--  This is the 14th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Wilmington College in men's basketball.  B-W leads the series, 9-4, including four straight victories and wins in both games played last year.  Last season, the Yellow Jackets beat Wilmington, 95-94, in Wilmington on December 13, 2003 and topped the Quakers, 76-60, in Berea on January 24, 2004.  The last Wilmington win came on January 26, 2002 in Berea when the Quakers beat B-W, 84-83.

The National Polls --  Baldwin-Wallace College is currently ranked 25th in this week’s D3hoops.com internet web site Division III national poll after winning a tournament championship at Hampden-Sydney (Va.) with wins against Hood, Md., 88-58, and host Hampden-Sydney, 76-67, on December 29-30, 2004.  It was B-W’s second tournament title this year.  Wilmington comes into this game unranked.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6??senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/  Open Door Christian School) and his brother, 6??sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5?1?senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name). At the wings will be 6??junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) and 6??sophomore Nick Meyer (Mentor).  Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.8 points per game, rebounding at 13.1 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 27 and is canning 58.6 percent of his field goals (95-of-162).  Tori Davis is second in scoring at 16.9 ppg., rebounding with 8.2 rpg. and blocked shots with 22.  He is also shooting a team-high 61.7 percent from the floor (74-of-120).  Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 9.3 points per game, second in assists with 41, and first with 23 three-pointers.  Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 6.8 ppg., first with 77 assists and second with 14 three-pointers.  Nick Meyer is sixth in scoring at 4.6 ppg. and has canned 13 treys and is shooting 52 percent (13-of-25) from “three-point land?
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'4" sophomore wing Matt Marks (Boardman), 6??senior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), 6??freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6??junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6??junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5?1?freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview).  Marks is averaging 6.3 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 2.6 ppg. and is first with 14 steals. 

The Wilmington College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Marc Kuntz to start 6??senior guard  David Guy, 6??junior guard Josh Rohrbacher, and 5?1?freshman guard Zach Broer-mann in the backcourt.  Two 6??forwards will get the nod in the post in senior Deaon Short and junior Eric Stirling.  Short tops the team in scoring at 16.2ppg., is second in rebounding at  5.3 rpg. and second steals with 23.  Stirling is second on the team in scoring at 16.1 ppg., first in rebounding at 6.6 rpg. and he tops the team in blocked shots with 10 and has canned 14 three-pointers.  Guy is third in scoring at 12.4 ppg. and has hit a team-leading 24 three-pointers.  Broermann is fifth in scoring at 6.5 ppg. and third with 13 three-pointers.  Rohrbacher scores 6.5 ppg. and is second on the team with 27 assists.
        Off the bench look for Coach Kuntz to play 5?1?freshman guard Billy Nelson, 6??freshman guard/forward Nick Berter, 6??freshman guard Nick Harrison and  6??senior forward Darrick Barga.  Nelson is averaging 5.0 ppg. and has recorded 16 assists.  Berter is averaging 2.3 ppg. and is shooting 43.8 percent from three-point range (seven-of-16).

In B-W's Last Game, on January 5, 2005 in Berea:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 74, Mount Union 71, -- The Yellow Jackets last played on Wednesday, January 5, when they defeated OAC arch-rival Mount Union College, 74-71, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  Brothers Thad and Tori Davis both had a double-double win the win.  Thad scored a team-high 28 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.  Tori tallied 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  A key in the victory was that B-W outrebounded Mt. Union, 42-28.  Thad Davis also blocked a three-pointer as time expired to preserve the win.

In Wilmington’s Last Game:  Wilmington at Ohio Northern on January 5, 2005 in Wilmington was cancelled due to bad weather. -- Wilmington last played on Sunday, January 2 when it defeated Maryville (Tenn.) College, 80-72, in Wilmington. Senior forward Deon Short and junior forward Eric Stirling led the way for Wilmington. Short had a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Stirling had  20 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Also in double figures for the Quakers was senior guard David Guy with 12 points.

Five-Game Win Streak Ties Season-High -- B-W’s current five-game winning streak ties a season-high.  The Yellow Jackets won their first five games of the year.

Two Tournament Titles --  The Yellow Jackets both both tournament that they competed in and are 7-0 in nonleague games.  B-W won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament title and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was the Most Valuable Player.  The Jackets won the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title last week and senior forward Thad Davis was the MVP.

Thad Davis and the OAC Player of the Week Award -- Senior forward Thad Davis is this week’s OAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.  It is the third time this year that he has won the honor, including the past two weeks.  Overall, Davis has won the award five times.  Earlier this year, Thad was also honored on the D3hoops.com internet web site Team of the Week in Division III.

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters today’s game with Wilmington with 1,590 career points and 810 career rebounds and stands seventh on the all-time scoring list and fifth on the all-time rebounding list.  Next up on the scoring list are Shelley Watters (1979-82) with 1,627 career points and stands sixth all-time. Fifth place is held by Ted Johnson (1965-69) with 1,652 points.  Johnson is also fourth in rebounding with 823.

Tom Harrington Surpasses 300 Career Assist Mark -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington had one assist against Mount Union and now has 327 in his career.  He stands eighth on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 355 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  He is 355-292 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of  636-406 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasions at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.

B-W to Acknowledge Anniversary of “Sweet 16?Team on Feb. 19 -- On Saturday, February 19, Baldwin-Wallace College will recognize the members of its 1994-95 NCAA Division III National Tournament “Sweet 16?team at halftime of its Seniors?Day game against Capital University.  Game time is 3:00 p.m.

Al Sirat Grotto Day is on Feb. 12 --  On Saturday, February 12, B-W and the Al Sirat Grotto, a local philanthropic group, will combine to host its 20th Annual Al Sirat Grotto Basketball Game against Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m.  Partial gate proceeds will go to benefit children with cerebral palsy.  The members of the Grotto also will honor a player of the game from each school.
