B-W Defeats Wilmington College, 95-94, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds this afternoon as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 95-94, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. Davis' layup with five seconds left in the game was the winning margin of victory. In addition, B-W withstood 19 three-pointers by Wilmington in winning the game.

With its win, B-W improves to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. With its loss, Wilmington falls to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.

In addition to Thad Davis, junior point guard Tom Harrington (Parma Heights/ Holy Name) had a career-high 20 points and eight assists, freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) had 18 points and nine rebounds, sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) had 11 points and freshman guard Matt Marks (Boardman) had 10 points.

Wilmington was led Deon Short with 22 points and four three-pointers, David Guy had 19 points and five three-pointers, Tyran Thompson had 16 points and four three-pointers, Mike Umpleby had 13 points and three treys and Stephen Gee had 11 points and one three-pointer.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 10 points, at 241-4 with 11:18 left before the intermission, when Marks canned a jumper. B-W also led at halftime, 43-38. In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to as many as eight points, at 79-71 with 7:02 left in the game, when Aufmuth scored on a layup. Wilmington then went on a 21-6 run to build its biggest lead at 79-71 with 2:34 left when Short nailed a three-pointer. B-W then had a 109-2 run to win the game, including its final 6-0 spurt that was capped when Davis scored the game-winning layup.

For the game, B-W canned 62.3 percent of its field goals (38 of 61). Wilmington made 19 of 32 three-pointers for 59.4 percent and was 35 of 66 shooting overall for 53%.

The Yellow Jacket men will be back in action this Wednesday, December 17, when they travel to Alliance to play OAC arch-rival Mount Union College at 7:30 p.m. B-W will be back at home next Saturday, December 20, when they play Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to rebound following a tough loss to Otterbein College on Saturday when it faces OAC rival Wilmington College. 
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 4-2 overall record and are coming off a 66-63 defeat on Saturday against Otterbein College.  B-W had won four straight games since a season-opening, 59-50 loss to 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon (Va.) College in the first round of the Dickinson (Pa.) College Tournament.  Since that game, the Yellow Jackets have beaten host Dickinson (65-31), Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University (80-67), Thiel College of Pennsylvania (75-60) and Oberlin (75-66).
        Wilmington enters today's game with a 1-5 record and 1-1 OAC record following its 98-64 loss at Ohio Northern University in Ada on Wednesday.  The Quakers opened the OAC schedule last Saturday with a win against Heidelberg College.  That victory broke a season-opening four-game losing streak and was Will Rey's first win at Wilmington.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Wilmington Series--  This is the 12th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Wilmington College in men's basketball.  B-W leads the series, 7-4, including a 100-75 victory in the last meeting on January 25, 2003 in Berea.  The last Wilmington win was a 84-83 victory in Berea on Jan. 26, 2002.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks (Boardman)
on the inside.  At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 17.7 ppg. and rebounding at 12.3 rpg. Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 13.0 ppg and 8.2 rpg . Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 12.5 ppg and is 11 of 25 from three-point rangefor 44.0%.  Tom Harrington tops the team with 31 assists..
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time.  In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play. 

The Wilmington Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Will Rey to start 5'8" freshman guard Luke Wolfin-barger, 6'0" junior guard David Guy, 6'2" and junior guard B.J. Gordon, 6'2" in the backcourt.  Sophomore Josh Rohrbacher and 6'4" sophomore Stephen Gee will start at the forward positions.  Gee tops the team in scoring at 13.2 ppg. and in rebounding at 7.3 rpg.  Guy is second in scoring at 12.2 ppg. and leads the team with 10 three-pointers.  Gordon scores 7.8 ppg. and tops the team with 13 assists.  Rohrbacher scores 5.8 ppg. and grabs 2.8 rpg.  Wolfinbarger made his second career start at ONU and averages 4.0 ppg. with a team-high 11 steals.
        Off the bench, look for Rey to play 6'1" sophomore Mike Umpleby, 6'4" sophomore forward Brett Carpenter and 6'2" freshman guard Mike King.  Also look for 5'8" sophomore guard Tyran Thompson, 6'4" junior forward Deon Short and 6'4" senior forward Darrick Barga to see action as well.  Short is third on the team in scoring at 9.8 ppg.

In B-W's Last Game:  Otterbein --  66, Baldwin-Wallace -- 63 on Saturday, December 6 in Berea, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets were defeated by OAC rival Otterbein College, 66-63,at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.  Senior forward Thad Davis led the way offensively with 20 points and nine rebounds.  His brother, freshman forward Tori Davis, scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds.  Junior point guard Tom Harrington also had 11 points, including three three-pointers, and a team-high six assists. A key in the loss was the fact that B-W was outrebounded 18-9 on the offensive end of the court and 40-27 overall.

In Wilmington's Last Game:  Ohio Northern-- 98, Wilmington --  64 on Wednesday, December 10 in Ada, Ohio --  The Quakers lost their first OAC game of the season, 98-64, at Ohio Northern University in Ada at the ONU Sports Center.  Despite the loss, sophomore forward Stephen Gee led Wilmington in scoring with 20 points.  He also tied junior guard B.J. Gordon for the most rebounds with six.  Junior forward Deon Short came off the bench to score 16 points and grab three rebounds in 20 minutes of action.


Yellow Jacket Chatter


Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 331 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 612-398 in 38 years overall.

Davis Doubles His Pleasure Five of Six Times -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) has scored and rebounded in double figures in five of six games this season.  He currently leads the Ohio Athletic Conference in both rebounding (12.3 rpg.) and blocked shots (17).  Davis ended his double-double streak last Saturday against Otterbein when he had 20 points and nine rebounds.

A Young Team in 2003-2004 --  Head Coach Steve Bankson's 2003-2004 edition of the Yellow Jackets lists 19 plyaers, but does not have a senior.  Juniors Thad Davis, starting point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) and back up post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian School) are the elder statesmen.  On the roster are three juniors, five sophomores and 11 freshmen.

B-W Has Lost Only to Nationally-Ranked Teams -- B-W's only two losses this winter have been to nationally-ranked teams, Randolph-Macon College of Virginia and OAC rival Otterbein College.  B-W lost to then 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon, 59-50, in the first round of the Dickinson (Pa.) College Tournament on November 21.  The Yellow Jackets lost to Otterbein, 66-63, last Saturday in Berea.
