Straight Win and Ninth in its Last 10 Games
BEREA, OHIO — Senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) tipped in a missed free throw with 2.46 seconds left in the game (Saturday, January 22, 2005) as the 19th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College, 59-58, at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win was B-W’s third straight and ninth in its last 10 games.
Thad Davis led B-W with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his 15th double-double in 17 games this year. With its win, B-W is now 14-3 overall and 7-3 in the OAC. With its loss, Wilmington is now 8-8 overall and 4-5 in the OAC.
In the first half, B-W led by as many as nine points at 17-8 at the 11:14 mark when sophomore forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross) scored on a layup. The Quakers then went on a 10-0 run that was capped when junior forward Eric Stirling canned a jump shot with 7:54 remaining to give Wilmington an 18-17 advantage. The Yellow Jackets then outscored the Quakers 7-2 to lead at halftime, 24-20.
In the second half, B-W led by as many as seven points,40-33, when senior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) hit a jump shot with 10:16 left in the game. Wilmington then outscored B-W 24-15 and took its first lead of the second stanza at 57-55 with 1:16 remaining when freshman guard Zach Broermann made the back end of a pair of free throws. Then Stirling put the Quakers up by three points, 58-55, when he also made one of two free throws with 17 seconds left. On B-W's next possession, Harrington found a wide open Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) who scored on a layup and was also fouled on the play. With the score at 58-57 with 2.46 seconds remaining, Tori Davis missed the free throw and Thad Davis tipped it in to give B-W the win.
In addition to Thad Davis, Tori scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Harrington also scored in double figures with 12 marker.
With his 12 points and 10 rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,676 career points and 870 career rebounds and ranks fifth all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding at B-W.
Wilmington was led by Stirling who scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Broermann added 15.
B-W next plays on Wednesday, January 26 when it travels to University Heights for a showdown with first place and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m. at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College on Saturday, January 22, 2004 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m. This is the first game of the second half of the OAC regular season.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its third straight game and ninth in its last 10 outings when it hosts the Wilmington Quakers at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 13-3 overall and 6-3 Ohio Athletic Conference record following a 92-66 victory against Heidelberg College on January 19 in Tiffin, Ohio. With their 6-3 OAC record, the Yellow Jackets are in third place in the OAC Standings.
Wilmington enters this game with a 8-7 overall and 4-4 OAC record following its 91-50 loss to Capital University on Jan. 19 in Bexley. The Quakers have lost three of their last four games.
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Wilmington Series-- This is the 15th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Wilmington College in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 10-4, including five straight victories, a 97-90 double overtime win on Jan. 8, 2005 in Wilmington and wins in both games played last year. Last season, the Yellow Jackets beat Wilmington, 95-94, in Wilmington on December 13, 2003 and topped the Quakers, 76-60, in Berea on January 24, 2004. The last Wilmington win came on January 26, 2002 in Berea when the Quakers beat B-W, 84-83.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), at the post positions. At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royal-ton/ Parma Heights Holy Name). At the wings will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) and 6’2” sophomore Nick Meyer (Mentor). If Meyer doesn’t start, look for 5’11” freshman Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park) to get his second career start. Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.4 points per game, rebounding at 12.8 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 37 and is canning 59.5 percent of his field goals (125-of-210). Tori Davis is second in scoring at 18.2 ppg., rebounding with 8.9 rpg. and blocked shots with 31. He is also shooting a team-high 61.7 percent from the floor (111-of-180). Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 9.5 points per game, second in assists with 57, and first with 27 three-pointers. Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 7.8 ppg., first with 98 assists and second with 23 three-pointers. Nick Meyer is seventh in scoring at 3.8 ppg. and has canned 13 treys and is shooting 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from “three-point land”.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'4" sophomore wing Matt Marks (Boardman), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and Schuler. Marks is averaging 7.0 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 3.1 ppg. and is first with 16 steals. Schuler started on Wednesday at Heidelberg and had 10 points. He had a career-high 11 markers last Saturday at Marietta. Sekerak also had a career-high 10 points at Heidelberg.
The Wilmington College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Marc Kuntz to start 6’0” senior guard David Guy, 6’2” junior guard Josh Rohrbacher, and 5’11” freshman guard Zach Broer-mann in the backcourt. Two 6’4” forwards will get the nod in the post in senior Deaon Short and junior Eric Stirling. Short tops the team in scoring at 15.4 ppg., is second in rebounding at 4.7 rpg. and second steals with 29. Stirling is second on the team in scoring at 14.9 ppg., first in rebounding at 6.1 rpg. and he tops the team in blocked shots with 13 and has canned 33.3 percent of his three-pointers. Guy is third in scoring at 12.4 ppg. and has hit a team-leading 35 three-pointers. Broermann is fifth in scoring at 6.9 ppg. and second with 17 three-pointers. Rohrbacher scores 6.5 ppg. and is third on the team with 31 assists.
Off the bench look for Coach Kuntz to play 5’11” freshman guard Billy Nelson, 6’3” freshman guard/forward Nick Berter, 6’3” freshman guard Nick Harrison and 6’4” senior forward Darrick Barga. Nelson is averaging 4.9 ppg. and has recorded 26 assists. Berter is averaging 2.6 ppg. and is shooting 47.6 percent from three-point range (10-of-21).
In the First Meetings This Year Between B-W and Wilmington: Jan. 8, 2005 at Wilmington: Baldwin-Wallace -- 97, Wilmington -- 90 in Double Overtime -- In the first meeting this winter between Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington, on Saturday, January 8 in Wilmington, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Quakers, 97-90 in double overtime. Sophomore forward Tori Davis led B-W with a career-high 29 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. He was supported in double figures by senior point guard Tom Harrington with a season-high 18 points and seven assists, sophomore wing player Matt Marks with a season-high 17 points and senior forward Thad Davis with 13 points and 12 rebounds. For the Quakers, senior guard David Guy and freshman guard Billy Nelson tied for team-high honors with 18 points each.
In B-W's Last Game: January 19, 2005 in Tiffin versus Heidelberg: Baldwin-Wallace -- 92, Mount Union 66, -- The Yellow Jackets last played on Wednesday, Jan. 19, when they defeated OAC-rival Heidelberg, 92-66, at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The win was B-W’s eighth in the last nine games. Sophomore forward Tori Davis led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Five other players joined Tori Davis in double figures, including his brother, senior forward Thad Davis with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Junior guard Keith Aufmuth and sophomore guard Matt Marks had 15 and 11 points, respectively. Freshman guards Tyler Sekarek and Brendan Schuler each scored 10 points.
In Wilmington’s Last Game: January 19, 2005 in Bexley versus Capital: Wilmington 50, Capital 91, -- In Wilmington’s last game, a 91-50 loss against Capital University on Wednesday in Bexley, junior forward Eric Stirling led the Quakers in scoring with 14 points. With its loss, Wilmington dropped to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters the game with Heidelberg with 1,664 career points and 860 career rebounds and stands fifth on the all-time scoring list and fourth on the all-time rebounding list. Next up on the scoring list is the legendary Bob Walters (1959-63), who scored 1,830 points. All-time leading scorer Dean Martin (1969-73), who had 2,062 career points, is next on the rebounding list with 1,146 and exactly 300 away.
Tom Harrington Surpasses 300 Career Assist Mark -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington has 348 career assists and stands sixth on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark. Harrington led the OAC in assists a year ago with 139 and currently leads this year in both assists with 98 and assist-to-turnover ratio.
Thad Davis and the OAC Player of the Week Award -- Senior forward Thad Davis is this week’s OAC Player of the Week, for the fourth time this season and for the sixth time in his career. Earlier this year, Thad was also honored on the D3hoops.com internet web site Team of the Week in Division III.
Steve Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 358 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. He is 358-293 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 639-407 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasons at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
Two Tournament Titles -- The Yellow Jackets both both tournament that they competed in and are 7-0 in nonleague games. B-W won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament title and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was the Most Valuable Player. The Jackets won the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title last week and senior forward Thad Davis was the MVP.
B-W to Acknowledge Anniversary of “Sweet 16” Team on Jan. 29 -- On Saturday, January 29, Baldwin-Wallace College will recognize the members of its 1994-95 NCAA Division III National Tournament “Sweet 16” team at halftime of its game against Marietta College. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
Al Sirat Grotto Day is on Feb. 12 -- On Saturday, February 12, B-W and the Al Sirat Grotto, a local philanthropic group, will combine to host its 20th Annual Al Sirat Grotto Basketball Game against Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m. Partial gate proceeds will go to benefit children with cerebral palsy. The members of the Grotto also will honor a player of the game from each school.
