Classic Tournament Championship
BEREA, OHIO -- Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds tonight (Saturday, November 19, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated host Westminster (Pa.) College, 133-113, in the championship game of the Buzz Ridl Classic Tournament in New Wilmington, Pa.
With its win, B-W is now 2-0 overall and Westminster 1-1 overall for the season.
B-W trailed 7-6 early in the first half before going on an 11-0 run sparked by a layup by senior wing player Dan Gundert (Wellington) to take a 17-7 lead at the 15:09 mark. The Yellow Jackets would never trail in the game again and build their lead to as many as 22 points en route to a 65-50 lead at halftime. Tori Davis scored 10 of his team-high 22 points in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets would continue their hot shooting going on a series of small runs building their lead to as many as 26 points at 121-95 with a pair of free-throws by sophomore guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) with 3:57 left in the game. Freshman post player Andrew Bene (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) connected on a pair of free-throws with :38 seconds left in the game which gave B-W 133 points and surpassed the previous B-W record for points scored in a game. The previous mark was 131 points set against Marietta last season.
For the game, B-W shot 68.5 percent (52-of-79) from the floor while Westminster shot 39.2 percent (40-102) including going 21-of-66 (31.8 percent) from behind the arc. The Yellow Jackets also outrebounded the Titans 74-33.
Individually for B-W, Davis led the way with his 22 points and game-high 15 rebounds. Joining Davis in double figures were Gundert with a career-high 19 points, junior post player Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross) with a career-high 18 points, senior wing Keith Aufmuth (Cleveland/ Brooklyn) also scored 18 points, senior forward Charod Hale (Akron/ Kenmore) scored a career-high 14 points and Schuler rounded-out the double-digit scoring with 12.
For Westminster, Mark DeMonaco scored a game-high 26 points and Craig Hannon added 17 points offensively.
For their efforts during the tournament, Schuler was named tournament Most Valuable Player and Gundert was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
B-W next plays on Tuesday, November 22 when it travels to traditional rival Oberlin College at 7:30 p.m. in Oberlin.
