Otterbein Men Beat B-W, 67-62, in Berea; B-W Plays in OAC Tournament on Wednesday

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore Brice Rausch scored a game-high 19 points as the Otterbein College men’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 67-62, on Seniors’ Day (Saturday, February 20, 2010) at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. B-W will enter the OAC Tournament as the number six seed and play at Capital University on Wednesday.

With their win, the Cardinals finish the season at 8-17 overall and 6-12 in the OAC. With their loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 14-11 overall and 9-9 in the OAC entering their quarterfinal game at #3-seeded Capital at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24.

In addition to Rausch for Otterbein, Ian Gardner totaled 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. For B-W, sophomore guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/Senior) scored 16 points and senior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) totaled 14.

In the first half, Otterbein led 12-5 when Mat Greene scored on a layup at the 12:15 mark. The Cardinal advantage grew to 10, at 24-14, when Gardner nailed a three-pointer at 7:39. B-W responded with an 11-4 run and trailed 29-25 after a layup from senior forward Paul Glass (Medina/Senior) at 3:39. After Otterbein scored five straight to lead 34-30, the Yellow Jackets answered with a 9-0 run to end the half and tied the game at 34 apiece when freshman forward Ed Householder (North Jackson/Tallmadge) hit two of three free throws with two seconds left.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets grabbed their first lead of the game, at 40-39, when freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Height/Walsh Jesuit) hit a layup at 16:22. The B-W lead grew to five, at 44-39, following a three-pointer from sophomore guard Matt Triana (North East, Pa./North East) at 13:53. Otterbein came back with five in a row and tied the game at 44 then moved ahead 48-47 on a Cory Raiti layup at 7:30. The Jackets regained the lead and moved ahead 53-49 at 5:10 following six straight points from Cabbil.

Otterbein once again chipped away and tied the score at 55 all on a Gardner layup at 3:01. The two sides then tied each other twice before Otterbein’s Brice Rausch completed a three-point play to put Otterbein ahead 63-60 with 21 seconds left to play. B-W got two free throws from Cabbil on its next possession, but the Cardinals hit four free throws down the stretch and held the Jackets scoreless to secure the 67-62 victory.
