13th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Men Beat Thiel, 86-82, in Greenville,

Pennsylvania to Improve to Overall; Thad Davis Scores Career-High 37 Points

BEREA, OHIO — Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored a career and game-high 37 points tonight (November 27, 2004) as the 13th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated host Thiel College, 86-82, in Greenville, Pennsylvania to improve to 4-0 overall. With its loss, Thiel fell to 1-2 overall.

In the first half, B-W overcame a 10-point deficit to lead by four points, at 36-32 with 3:05 left, when sophomore Matt Marks (Boardman) scored a basket. The Yellow Jackets were tied at halftime, 39-39. In the second half, Thad Davis scored 20 of his 37 points as B-W extended its lead to as many as eight points at 85-77 with 26.4 seconds left in the game when junior Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) connected on a pair of free throws. The Jackets took the lead for good at the 5:38 mark in the second half when senior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Holy Name) made a pair of free throws to put B-W up, 69-68. The closest Thiel would get was four points at the final score of 86-82 with one second left in the contest.

In addition to Thad Davis, sophomore Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door), Aufmuth and Marks also scored in double figures for B-W with 12, 16 and 13 points, respectively. Tori Davis also collected a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets made 31-of-39 free throws, including 21-of-27 in the second half. Thiel was just

5-of-9 from the line in the second stanza.

With his 37 points and 10 rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,432 career points and 702 career rebounds and is now 10th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list and ninth in rebounding.

Daryl Moore led Thiel with 33 points.

B-W will back in action on Wednesday, December 1, when it hosts traditional rival Oberlin College at 8:00 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The B-W and Oberlin men's game will follow a game between the B-W women, 2-1 overall, and Grove City (Pa.) College at 6:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will travel to Greenville, Pennsylvania to play Thiel College and is in search of its fourth straight victory to start the 2004-2005 season.

The Yellow Jackets opened the season on November 19-20 by winning the Gettysburg (Pa.) College Days Inn Tournament and then defeated Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 94-91, this past Tuesday night in Berea. At Gettysburg, B-W defeated the University of Mary Washington (Va.), 64-57, in the first round and beat host Gettysburg College, 59-57, on a buzzer-beater in the championship game.

Thiel opened its season with a 1-1 record at the Juniata (Pa.) Tip-Off Tournament in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania and won the consolation game for third place. The Tomcats lost to Ohio Athletic Conference member Muskingum College, 85-50, in the first round and then defeated Penn State Berks-Lehigh Valley, 91-63, in the consolation game.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Thiel Series-- This is the 10th meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Thiel College. B-W leads the series, 6-3, including a 75-60 victory last year in Berea. B-W has won three straight games against the Tomcats. The last Thiel win came on November 20, 1999, at Thiel, 81-73, in the championship game of Thiel’s Tip-Off Tournament.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters --  Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4" senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6’4" sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6’4" sophomore swingman Matt Marks (Boardman) at the post positions. At the point guard will be 5’11" senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0" junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn). Tori Davis tops the team in scoring with 18.3 points per game, grabs 6.7 rebounds per game and is canning 61.8 percent of his field goals (21-of-34). Thad Davis is second in scoring at 18.0 ppg., first with 11.0 rpg., eight blocked shots and eight steals, and is shooting 58 percent from the floor (18-of-31) and 72% from the foul line (18-of-25). Tom Harrington is third in scoring at 12.0 ppg. ppg., first with 18 assistsand six three-pointers and has committed just two turnovers in 111 minutes of action. Keith Aufmuth is scoring 7.0 ppg. and is second with nine assists and five treys.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6’4" senior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), 6’0" freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2" junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6’5" junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5’11" freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview). Marks and Meyer are each averaging 4.7 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 4.0 ppg. and is second with six steals.

The Thiel College Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for third-year Head Coach Mike Snell to start a pair of 6’0" seniors in Daryl Moore and Ryan Singleton in the backcourt. At one forward, look for 6’3" junior Stephen Laird, and at another, look for 6’5" freshman Max Slater. Although 6’2" junior Damien Williams started the first two games at forward, look for Snell to possibly start either 6’3" junior Percy Sweeting or 6’5" freshman Joe Herrmann at the other spot. Moore tops the team in scoring at 18.5 ppg. and in assists with eight, and has canned six treys in the first two games. Singleton is scoring 12.0 ppg. and is tied for the team-lead with five steals. Sweeting rounds out the double figure scorers at 10.0 ppg. and tops the team with 8.0 rpg.

IN B-W’S LAST GAME on November 23 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 94, Case -- 91 on Nov. 23 in Berea -- In B-W’s game last Tuesday night in Berea, the Yellow Jackets improved to 3-0 overall with a 94-91 win against Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. It was B-W’s fifth straight win against the Spartans. Senior All-OAC forward Thad Davis led B-W in scoring and rebounding with 29 points and 16 rebounds as he canned eight-of-13 shots from the floor and 13-of-17 foul shots. He also had an assist, three steals and five blocked shots. His sophomore brother, All-OAC forward Tori Davis, had a career-high-tying 26 points and nine rebounds, and also contributed five assists and three blocked shots. Senior Academic All-OAC points guard Tom Harrington scored 13 points and passed for seven assists and DID NOT commit a turnover in 36 minutes.

IN THIEL’S LAST GAME: Thiel (Pa.)-- 91, Penn State Berks-Lehigh Valley -- 63 at the Juniata (Pa.) Trny. in Huntingdon, Pa. on Nov. 21 -- In Thiel’s last game, on November 21 at the Juniata Tournament, the Tomcats won the consolation game with a 91-63 blowout of Penn State Berks-Lehigh Valley. Senior guard Daryl Moore led Thiel with a game-high 26 points, including six-of-nine shooting from three-point range, and six assists. Moore was supported in double figures by starters Ryan Singleton, a senior guard, with 15 points and freshman forward Max Slater with 13 points and five rebounds. In addition and off the bench, junior forward Percy Sweeting scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and freshman forward Joe Herrmann had 10 points and 11 caroms.

LAST YEAR IN BEREA: B-W -- 75, Thiel -- 60 on November 29, 2003 -- Last year in Berea, the Yellow Jackets defeated Thiel, 75-60, at the Ursprung Gymnasium. Current senior forward Thad Davis led B-W with game-highs of 21 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots. B-W sped to a 46-29 halftime advantage and never looked back. Joining Thad Davis in double figures were current junior guard Keith Aufmuth with 15 points and nine assists and current sophomore forward Tori Davis with 13 points and nine rebounds. D.J. Gambridge led the Tomcats with 15 points.

The National Polls -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets are ranked 13th in this week’s (Monday, November 22) D3hoops.com Division III national poll.

Harrington Earned MVP Honors Last Weekend at Gettysburg -- Senior point guard Tom Harrington was named as the Most Valuable Player at last weekend’s (Nov. 19-20) Gettysburg Days Inn Tournament. Harrington scored 23 points, passed for 11 assists, grabbed four rebounds canned five-of-eight three-pointers for 61.5 percent and made just two turnovers in 75 minutes of action (out of a possible 80 total minutes) for a 5.5:1 assist to turnover ratio. Harrington was joined on the all-tourney team by Thad Davis.

Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters tonight’s game with Thiel with 1,395 career points and 692 career rebounds and stands 11th on the all-time scoring list and 10th on the all-time rebounding list. He needs three points against Thiel to surpass Howard Wright (1957-60) and move into the Top-10 all-time in scoring.

Doubleheader Next Wednesday in Berea -- The B-W women and men will host a doubleheader next Wednesday, December 1 in Berea. The Yellow Jacket women, 2-1 overall, host Grove City College of Pennsylvania in the first game at 6:00 p.m. and the men host rival Oberlin College at 8:00 p.m.

B-W Picked First in the OAC -- The Yellow Jackets open 2004-2005 Ohio Athletic Conference play next Saturday, December 4 when they play host to the Otterbein College Cardinals at 3:00 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium. B-W is tabbed to finish first in the OAC in the OAC Preseason Coaches poll which was conducted by conference call on November 3. B-W received eight of nine first place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team so only nine first place votes were possible). Otterbein was picked to finish second.

Three Return as All-OAC Players and One as an Academic All-OAC selection -- Senior forward Thad Davis returns as a first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference player from a year ago. He was also a second-team All-Great Lakes Region pick by the D3hoops.com Web Site. Joining Thad Davis on the 2003-2004 All-OAC team were sophomore forward Tori Davis as a second-team pick and junior guard Keith Aufmuth as an honorable mention choice. In addition, senior point guard Tom Harrington was an Academic All-OAC selection.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- This is Steve Bankson’s 40th year as a head coach. With his 348 victories at B-W, Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. Bankson, who has been at B-W for 26 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, is 348-290 at B-W and has a career mark of 629-404 in 40 years overall.

Wrestlers Idle Until Tuesday; It is on WBWC and the Internet -- The B-W wrestling team, 3-5 overall, will open OAC action this Tuesday, November 30 when it hosts OAC rival Ohio Northern in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m. That match will be carried live on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and over the College Internet Web site. To date, sophomore 285-pounder Bryan Kmetz (Brunswick) tops the team with a 7-1 record. He is 35-6 in his career.

Swimmers and Divers are Unbeaten in the OAC -- The B-W swimmers and divers are idle until January when they travel to Florida for their annual Winter Break Training and an invitational meet. To date, the men are 5-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the OAC, and the women are 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the OAC.
