The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team opens the 2003-2004 season at the Dickinson (Pa.) College Tournament against NCAA Division III power and the 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon (Va.) College Yellow Jackets. This should be an outstanding test for a young B-W Yellow Jacket squad. A year ago, the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace compiled a 13-13 overall record, including a 9-9 mark in the rugged Ohio Athletic Conference. It marked the 14th time in the past 15 years that B-W had a .500 or better record. The Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets are coming off a 28-2 season in which it was ranked as high as #1 in Division III, won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament title and advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Randolph-Macon Series-- This is the second meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Randolph-Macon College in men's basketball. The B-W Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 1-0, having played RMC in 1992 at the Oglethorpe (Ga.) Tournament in the first round. B-W won that game, 76-47.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) at the post positions. At the point guard will be Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).
THE B-W BENCH BUNCH -- Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'5" freshman wing player Matt Marks (Boardman) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time. In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play. Williams played in 16 games a year ago and averaged 0.5 ppg. He also had 16 assists and five steals. Belkofer played in 1.2 ppg. and 0.9 rpg. in 11 games.
The Randolph-Macon College Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for head coach Mike Rhoades to start Justin Moyer and Ryan Stein in the back court. Justin Wansley, Buck Poropatich and Kurt Bergmann will be the big men to start in the front court for the Yellow Jackets. Stein and Bergmann are the two lone returning starters from a year ago. Off the bench in 2002-2003, Wansley, Poropatich and Moyer all contributed heavily. In addition, 5'10" junior guard Brandon Scott, 6'1" sophomore guard Patrick Gill, 6'5" sophomore forward Mike McGinley aand 6'8" senior forward Jim Silcox all saw action in at least 19 of 30 games.
