The Yellow Jackets lose at ONU, 89-80, in the tale of two halves

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team dropped an 89-80 Ohio Athletic Conference decision tonight to the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears at the ONU Sports Center in Ada. The game was a tale of two halves.

With its loss, B-W drops to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the OAC and ONU improves to 9-3 overall and remains in a first place tie in the OAC at 4-1.

In the first half, B-W canned 15 of its first 18 shots from the floor (83.3 percent) and led by as many as 22 points, at 38-16, with 4:34 left before the intermission when sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) canned a three-pointer. B-W also led at halftime, 44-30. In thev second half, ONU took control and outscored B-W 38-12 in the first 12 minutes to take its biggest lead of 68-56 with 8:12 left in the game when Jim Conrad canned two foul shots. B-W got as close as four points at 74-70 with 3:05 left on a Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) layup but could get no closer. ONU canned 10 of 10 foul shots in the final 1:06 to seal it.

Thad Davis led B-W with a career-high 31 points and nine rebounds and canned 11 of 11 foul shots. Aufmuth had 15 points and freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) had 13 points and six rebounds to join Thad in double figures.

ONU was paced by Conrad who scored 21 of his team-high 25 points in the second half. He was one of five Polar Bears in double digits.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action this Saturday, January 10 when they travel to Bexley to play Capital University at 3:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at the ONU Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.

 


RADIO -- All away B-W men's basketball games are broadcast on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM. This game will also be broadcast across the B-W Internet Web Site at www.bw.edu/athletics. The pregame show is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. from Ada.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its second straight game and stay tied atop the Ohio Athletic Conference Standings tonight when they travel to Ada, Ohio to play always-tough Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 8-3 overall record following their 79-60 win against MacMurray (Ill.) College in the consolation game of The College of Wooster Mose Hole Tournament on December 30 in Wooster. B-W returns to OAC play tonight and is currently tied for first place with a 3-1 OAC record, including three straigfht OAC wins. Prior to Christmas, B-W beat Wilmington College (95-94), Mount Union (71-66) and Marietta (90-83) in OAC action.

Ohio Northern enters this game with an 8-3 overall and 2-2 OAC record following its 71-61 win against Wartburg (Iowa) College at the annual Cactus Hoop Jam Classic in Pheonix, Arizona on December 30. The Polar Bears won the tournament title as it defeated Illinois College, 85-49, Linfield (Ore.) College, 79-53, and Wartburg.

The All-Time Baldwin-Wallace Versus Ohio Northern Series-- This is the 72nd all-time meetings between Baldwin-Wallace College and Ohio Northern University in men's basketball. The Polar Bears lead the all-time series between the two schools, 47-24, including five straight victories. ONU won both meetings a year ago, 65-44 in Berea on January 8, 2003, and 83-74 in Ada on Februarey 12, 2003. The last B-W win came on January 6, 2001 when the Yellow Jackets beat the Polar Bears in Ada, 81-67.

Who Are the Common Opponents ???? -- Both Baldwin-Wallace and Ohio Northern have played Wilmington and Marietta this season as common opponents. Both teams beat Wilmington, B-W won in Berea, 95-94, and ONU defeated the Quakers in Ada, 98-64. Against Marietta, B-W beat the Pioneers in Berea, 90-83, while the Polar Bears lost to Marietta in Marietta, 74-63.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks (Boardman) on the inside. At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn). Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 19.9 ppg. and leads the OAC in rebounding at 10.9 rpg. He has also blocked 24 shots and shoots 52% from the floor. Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 13.2 ppg., rebounding with 8.4 rpg. He leads the OAC in blocked shots with 32 and shoots 56.1% from the floor. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 12.9 ppg., grabs 3.1 rpg., has a team-leading 19 three-pointers and is second in the OAC in foul shooting by canning 31 of 34 for 91.2%. Harrington is scoring 8.6 ppg. and tops the team and OAC with 67 assists (6.1 apg.) and has canned 18 treys. Marks is averaging 5.9 ppg. and 2.1 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time. In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play.

The Ohio Northern University Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Joe Campoli to start 6'2" senior Jim Conrad, 6'4" Billy Barkimer and 6'3" senior Chad Bostelman in the backcourt. On the inside, Campoli will start 6'8" junior Mark Killian and 6'9" senior Sam Mikolajewski. Conrad tops the Polar Bears in scoring at 19.3 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg., has canned 22 treys and tops the OAC in foul shooting at 91.5% by making 54 of 59 attempts. Bostelman is second in scoring at 10.8 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg. and has 20 three-pointers. Mikolajewski is fourth in scoring at 8.1 ppg. and is second with 6.4 rpg. Killian is fifth in scoring at 7.2 ppg. and tops the Polar Bears with 8.5 rpg. Barkimer scores 6.0 ppg. and tops ONU with 43 assists and 22 steals.

Off the bench, look for Coach Campoli to play 6'4" freshman wing Greg Badenhop, 6'4" sophomore wing Nathan Lieb, 6'6" junior post Phil Hoying and 5'9" sophomore point guard B.J. Thiesen. Badenhop is third in scoring at 10.3 ppg. and is second on the team with 21 three-pointers.

In B-W's Last Game: Baldwin-Wallace -- 79, MacMurray (Ill.) -- 60 on Tuesday, December 30 in Wooster, Ohio/ Second Round of the Mose Hole Classic -- The Yellow Jackets defeated MacMurray (Ill.) College, 79-60, in the consolation round of The College of Wooster Mose Hole Kiwanis Classic at the Timken Physical Education Center at Wooster. B-W lost to fourth-ranked Hanover (Ind.) College, 87-82 in overtime, in the first round. In the win over MacMurray, the Yellow Jackets were led by junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis with a game-high 27 points and seven rebounds as he canned 12 of 15 shots from the floor. He was supported in double figures by sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth with 14 points and seven assists. Freshman forward Tori Davis also had a career-high seven blocked shots.

Wooster Tournament Honors -- Thad Davis was named to the all-tournament team and Tori Davis was tabbed as the Most Valuable Defensive Player.

In Ohio Northern's Last Game: Ohio Northern-- 71-- Wartburg (Iowa) --61 on Tuesday, December 30 at the Cactus Hoop Jam Classic in Pheonix, Arizona -- The Polar Bears captured the title with a 3-0 record at the annual Cactus Hoop Jam Classic in Pheonix, Arizona as ONU beat Illinois College (85-49) in the first round, Linfield (Ore.) College, 79-53, in the second round and Wartburg (Iowa) College, 71-61, ikn the championship game. In the win versus Wartburg, senior guard Jim Conrad led four players in double figures with 20 points. In addition, senior guard Chad Bostelman had 18 points, senior center Sam Mikolajewski had 15 and junior forward Mark Killian had 10.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 335 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 616-399 in 38 years overall.

Thad Davis' Doubles -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) has seven had double figure scoring and double figure rebounding games this winter. He began the season with five straight and leads B-W in scoring at 19.9 ppg. and tops the Ohio Athletic Conference in rebounding (10.9 rpg.) and is second in blocked shots with 24.

Tori is Really Not the Other Davis -- Freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) is the younger brother of junior Thad Davis. Tori, making his own mark on the court, is averaging 13.2 ppg., 8.4 rpg., shoots 56.1% from the floor and is first in the OAC with 32 blocked shots, including 22 in his last four games (5.5 bpg.) and 13 in the two games at Wooster. He set a career-high with six blocked shots in a 71-66 win at Mount Union on December 17 in Alliance, tied it against Hanover on December 29 and broke it with seven in the victory versus MacMurray.

Tori has also had three double figure scoring and double figure rebounding games.

Tom Harrington Also Doubles His Pleasure -- Junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) had his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 assists in a 90-83 win versus Marietta. He had his second straight double-double with 16 points and 10 assists in the loss to Hanover.

Losses to Nationally-Ranked Teams -- B-W's three losses are all to nationally-ranked teams. B-W lost to Randolph-Macon (Va.) College, 59-50, in its season-opener when RMC was ranked ninth. B-W lost at home to Otterbein College, 66-63, on December 6 when Otterbein was 16th. Hanover was ranked third.

Football All-Americans -- Five Yellow Jacket football players, seniors Nate Mitchell (Butler, Pa./ Butler), Greg Koch (Olmsted Falls), Mark Anders (North Olmsted) and Ian Formaz (Wadsworth) and junior Nate Wilder (Youngstown Cardinal Mooney), all have been selected to the various Division III All-American teams.

In addition, Mitchell is this year's OAC Paul Hoernemann Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Defensive Lineman, Koch is the Lee Tressel Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Defensive Back and Anders is the Mike Gregory Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Offensive Back. Also, Defensive Coordinator Adam Howard was named as the OAC Assistant Coach of the Year.

Harbour Repeats as Academic All-American -- Senior offensive guard Joe Harbour (Upper Sandusly) repeated as an Academic All-American and made the first-team this year after earning second-team accolades a year ago.

Palmer Earns All-American Honors -- Senior volleyball middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/ South Central) earned AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-American honors. Palmer is the first B-W volleyball All-American since 1984.

The Wrestling Team is 3-0 and Ranked 29th Nationally -- The Yellow Jacket wrestling team is 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC and ranked 29th in the latest National Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association Adidas-Brute poll. B-W next competes on January 9-10 at the Division III National Dual Match Championships at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. To date, sophomore 125-pound All-American Jared Selover (Wapakoneta) is ranked fourth nationally at his weight class.

Swimmers Head to Florida -- The men's (4-3 overall and 2-0 in the OAC) and women's (5-3 overall and 2-0 in the OAC) swim teams head south to Florida to train from January 1 through January 10. B-W will compete in a dual meet down south.
