Ohio Northern Beats Baldwin-Wallace, 78-73, in Ada

BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore guard Greg Badenhop scored 18 points tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005) as the Ohio Northern University men’s basketball team beat Baldwin-Wallace College, 78-73, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the ONU Sports Center in Ada.

With its win, ONU improved to 14-10 overall and 11-6 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W dropped to 17-7 overall and 10-7 in the OAC and lost for the fourth time in its last five games.

In the first half, Ohio Northern jumped out to a 10-5 lead on a jumper by junior guard Ryan Leib. A Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) jumper at the 13:18 mark would tie the score at 10-10. After the Davis jumper, Ohio Northern would go on a 7-0 run and eventually led by as many as 12 points in the first half when Thad Davis was called for goaltending on senior center Mark Killian's shot at the 2:29 mark. Leib's jumper with two seconds left gave the Polar Bears a 41-31 led at intermission.

In the early second half, Ohio Northern would lead by as many as 16 points on a Ryan Lee jumper with 15:11 left in the half. B-W then outscored the Polar Bears, 24-13, to get as close as five points with 3:41 remaining in the game on a sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) free throw . The Yellow Jackets would come as close as five points on five different occassions including the final score of 78-73.

Joining Badenhop in double figures for ONU was junior guard Nate Leib with 17 points. Senior Mark Killian and sophomore Ryan Lee each chipped in with 10 points. Killian had a team-high 10 rebounds.

For B-W, Tori Davis led the way with a game-high 24 points, eight rebounds and a tied a career-high with eight blocks. Thad Davis scored 12 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Holy Name) chipped in with 11 points. With Thad Davis's 12 points and 13 rebounds tonight, he now has 1,817 career points and 950 career rebounds to rank fifth all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding.

B-W next plays on Saturday, February 19 when it hosts OAC-rival Capital University at 3:00 p.m. in the final regular season game for both teams.

Game Notes #24 vs. Ohio Northern

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University in a key OAC game on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 in the ONU Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.  This is the next to last regular season game for each school.  The 2005 OAC Tournament begins on Feb. 23.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when tey travel to Ada to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University in a key OAC contest.  B-W and ONU are tied with Capital University and Muskingum College for third place in the OAC Standings with two games left during the regular season.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 17-6 overall and 10-6 OAC record following a 65-62 loss at home to Muskingum last Saturday in Berea. It was B-W’s third loss in its last four games.
        The Polar Bears enter this game with a 13-10 overall and 10-6 OAC mark following a 107-98 victory at Marietta College last Saturday.  ONU has won four of its last five games and seven of its last nine contests.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Ohio Northern College Series --  This is the 75th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Ohio Northern University in men’s basketball.  ONU leads the series between the two schools, 48-26, but B-W has won the last two meetings, including a 74-54 victory in Berea this season on December 15, 2004.  B-W also won, 78-69, in the final meeting last season, on Feb. 11, 2004 in Berea.  ONU beat B-W a year ago in Ada, 89-80, on January 7, 2004.

The National Polls --  B-W was ranked 20th nationally in last week’s D3hoops.com internet web site national Division III poll.  The next poll is scheduled to be released on Feb. 14.

The Ohio Athletic Conference Race -- John Carroll University is in first place in the OAC at 12-4.  Otterbein College is second at 11-5 and B-W, ONU, Capital and Muskingum are 10-6.  The top four teams receive first round byes in the OAC Tournament next Wednesday, Feb. 23.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), on the inside. In the backcourt, look for 5’11” senior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name), 6’0” junior wing player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn)  and 6’0” freshman Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) to start.  Thad Davis tops the team and OAC in scoring with 20.3 points per game, Davis also tops the team and ALL of Division III in rebounding at 12.3 rebounds per game and is canning 61 percent of his field goals (178-of-292). He also tops the team and OAC with 47 blocked shots. Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.4 ppg.,  grabs 8.5 rpg., has 45 blocked shots and is shooting 60.2 percent from the floor (150-of-249).  Harrington is scoring at 9.3  ppg. ppg., leads the OAC with 139 assists, tops the team with 25 steals and is second with 34 three-pointers.  Aufmuth is scoring 9.9 ppg. and is second with 56 assists and 42 treys.  Sekerak started twice last week and scores 3.4 ppg., grabs 1.8 rpg. and has 26 assists and 20 steals.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6’0” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview), 6'2" sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6’4” sophomore forward Matt Marks (Boardman), 6’4” sophomore forward Chad Clark (Fremont Ross), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington) and 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore).  Schuler has started five games and scores 3.9 ppg. with 45 assists and 10 treys. Marks has started six games and scores 5.2 ppg., grabs 1.8 rpg. and has canned 14 three-pointers. Meyer has started 10 games and is averaging 4.0 ppg. and has canned 15 three-pointers.   Clark scores 4.2 ppg. in 19 contests.

ONU Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Joe Campoli to start 6’8’’ seior post Mark Killian, 6’4’’ junior wing Nate Lieb and 6’3’’ sophomore swingman Ryan Lee at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5’11’’ sophomore Jared Bostelman and at the wing will be 6’4’’ sophomore Greg Badenhop.  Badenhop leads the team in scoring at 17.9 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg., has a team-leading 59 three-pointers to go with 48 assists and 38 steals. Badenhop also shoots 89.9 percent from the foul line (98-of-109). Lieb scores 10.0 ppg. and has canned 45 three-pointers.  He has 43 assists and shoots 81.4 percent from the charity stripe. Killian has made to starts and scores 6.5 ppg. and grabs 4.6 rpg. Lee also has made 10 starts and scores 6.2 ppg. and grabs 3.9 rpg. Bostelman scores 5.3 ppg. and has a team-leading 55 assists.
         Off the bench, look for 6’6” senior post player Phil Hoying, 6’0”  freshman guard Kyle Gehle, 5’11” freshman guard Nate Overmyer, 6’3” sophomore wing Bart Hostetler and 5’11”  sophomore guard Charlie Kelly to all see playing time. Hoying has made 13 starts and is third on the team in scoring at 9.3 ppg., grabs 4.1 rpg., has a team-leading 27 blocked shots and cans 53.9 percent of his field goal attempts (90-of-167). Gehle has started once and scores 7.7 ppg., grabs 2.5 rpg. and has canned 25 triples.  Kelly has played in 17 games and scores 8.0 ppg. and has 26 three’s.

In the First Meeting This Season Between B-W and ONU, on Dec. 15, 2004 in Berea: B-W -- 74, ONU -- 54 -- In the first meeting this season between B-W and ONU, on Wednesday, December 15 in Berea, the Yellow Jackets dominated the inside and defeated the Polar Bears, 74-54, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium.  In victory, B-W was led by senior forward Thad Davis with game highs of 30 points and 19 rebounds.  Supporting  Thad Davis in the win were junior wing Keith Aufmuth  with 17 points and sophomore forward Tori Davis with 11 points and five rebouds.  Despite its loss, ONU was led by freshman guard Kyle Gehle with 17 points and sophomore guard Greg Badenhop with 10 points.  Keys in the Yellow Jacket victory included shooting 51.7 percent from the floor (30-of-58) and outrebounding ONU, 50-25.

In B-W's Last Game, on Feb. 12, 2005 versus Muskingum in Berea: Muskingum --  65, Baldwin-Wallace -- 62 -- In B-W’s last game, 65-62 loss to Muskingum College last Saturday (Feb. 12), the Yellow Jackets were outrebounded, 41-27, including 15-7 on the offensive end of the court.  That was the difference in the game. Despite the loss, sophomore forward Tori Davis had a game-high 20 points.  Senior point guard Tom Harrington had 18 points, including four-of-six shooting from three-point range, six assists, four rebounds and a steal.

In Ohio Northern’s Last Game, on Feb. 12  at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio:  Ohio Northern -- 107,  Marietta -- 98  -- In the Polar Bears’ last game, a 107-98 win at Marietta College last Saturday, sophomore wing player Greg Badenhop led six players in double figures with 24 points. In addition, sophomore guard Jared Bostelman, sophomore wing Ryan Lee and junior wing Nate Lied each had 17 points and senior post Mark Killian and sophomore guard Charlie Kelly each had 11 markers.  ONU canned 38-of-67 field goals for 56.7 percent and outrebounded the Pioneers, 55-38.


Yellow Jacket Chatter

Thad Davis is Fifth  All-Time in Scoring and Fourth in Rebounding --  With his 1,805 career points, Thad Davis is fifth on College the all-time scoring list.  Thad also has 937 career rebounds and is fourth on that all-time list. Next up on the scoring list is No.4 Bob Walters (1959-63), who scored 1,840 points. Thad's 915 rebounds are some 208 shy of No.3 Bob Scelza (1981-84).
       
Harrington Also Among All-Time Leaders -- Tom Harrington is fifth all-time in assists with 389 in his career.  Harrington has led the OAC in assists the past two years with 139 a year ago and his current total of 139.  Harrington was also a finalist for this year’s ESPN/ Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year award.  He was just one of three Division III finalist.

Five Double Their Pleasure This Year -- Five Yellow Jackets, Thad Davis and Tori Davis, Keith Aufmuth, Tom Harrington and Brendan Schuler have all recorded a double-double this year.  Thad and Tori Davis lead the way with 18 and 10, respectively, and have done it with points and rebounds.  Harrington, Aufmuth and Schuler have all done it once each and by way of points and assists.

Bankson Increases Record Win Total -- Veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson has won more games that any other college coach in Ohio. In 40 years as a head coach, including the last 25 at B-W, Bankson has accumulated 643 wins. He is 643-410 overall, including a 362-296 mark in Berea.
