Yellow Jackets Defeat Oberlin, 75-66; Win Fourth Straight Game

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Oberlin College, 75-66, in a non-conference game tonight at the Phillips Gymnasium in Oberlin. With the win, the Jackets improve to 4-1 overall and have won four straight games.

The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) with career-high 21 points, including five of six from beyond the arc, and three assists.  Joining him in double figures were freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door)  with 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) chipped in with 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.  Alex Malone led Oberlin with a game-high 22 points.

Baldwin-Wallace lead by 16 points at 39-23 at the half, but Oberlin cut the lead to seven at 73-66 with 1:04 remaining in the contest.  B-W raised their lead to eight at 74-66 when Aufmuth hit a free throw with :50 remaining in the game and the Yeomen never got closer. 

B-W had the edge in both rebounding (39-28) and free throw attempts (32-21) to help the Yellow Jackets to victory.  The win gave Head Coach Steve Bankson his 612th career victory.

Baldwin-Wallace will return to action on and begin OAC play on Saturday, December 6 when they host Otterbein College at 3:00 p.m. in the Urpsurng Gymnasium.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team travels to Oberlin College to play a nonleague game against the Oberlin College Yeomen on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Phillips Gymnasium.  Game time is at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its fourth straight game when it travels to Oberlin to play nonleague foe Oberlin College at Phillips Gymnasium.  Oberlin and B-W are longtime rivals but have not played each other since the 1990-91 season.
        The Yellow Jackets have won three straight games since opening the season with a 59-50 loss to 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon (Va.) College in the opening round of the Dickinson (Pa.) College Tournament.  Since that game,
B-W has beaten host beaten Dickinson (65-31), Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve Univesity (80-67) and Thiel College of Pennsylvania (75-60).
        Oberlin enters the game with a 3-1 record after defeating Manchester (Ind.) College, 79-75.  The Yeoman have won two straight.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Oberlin Series --  This is the 63rd all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Oberlin College in men's basketball.  B-W leads the series, 47-15, including an 84-74 victory in the last meeting on November 11, 1990 at Oberlin.  B-W has also won eight straight games against the Yeomen.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- See scoring averages and other information in the box to the right.   Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'4" junior Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) on the inside.  At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 18.3 ppg. and in rebounding at 13.0 rpg.  Keith Aufmuth is second in scoring at 12.5 ppg. Tori Davis is third in scoring and second in rebounding at 11.5 ppg. and 7.8 rpg.  Tom Harrington tops the team with 18 assists.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'5" freshman wing player Matt Marks (Boardman) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time.  In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play. 

The Oberlin Probable Starters and Preview -- The starters are listed in the box below and to the right.  Look for Head Coach Frank "Happy" Dobbs to start 6'6" senior Chris Ikpoh, 6'8" senior Bosko Tomasevic and f6'4" reshman Chris Williams in the paint for the Yeoman.  Ikoph leads the team with a 17.5 points per game average and in rebounds with 6.8 per game.  He also is a strong defender highlighted by his team-high eight steals.  Tomasevic uses his 6'8" stature to play a significant role in the post.  He is second on the team in points with 11.0 ppg. and shoots 53.6 percent from the field.  He also grabs 5.8 rpg to rank second.  Williams adds 8.0 ppg. and 5.8 rpg. At the guard positions, look for 5'10" freshman Alex Malone and 6'0" junior Tony Richardson to start.  Malone averages 9.0 ppg. and makes 51.9 percent of his shots from the field.  Richardson,a good defender who has five steals, averages 8.3 ppg.
        Off the bench, look for Dobbs to play 6'5" junior forward Ronnie Goines, 6'5" freshman forward Matt Kaplan, 5'10" junior guard Dwayne Evans and 6'0" senior guard Julius Hill.  In addition, look for 5'8" senior guard Cameron Leverett and 6'4" freshman forward Marcus Little off the bench.

In B-W's Last Game:  B-W -- 75, Thiel (Pa.)  -- 60 on Saturday, November 29 in Berea, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets won their third straight game as they beat non-conferenece rival Thiel (Pa.) College, 75-60,at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  It was B-W's 2003-2004 home opener.  Junior forward Thad  Davis led B-W in scoring and rebounding with a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds.  He also had five blocked shots.  Sophomore wing player Keith Aufmuth added 15 points and a career-high nine assists. Freshman forward Tori Davis added 13 points and eight rebounds.

In Oberlin's Last Game:  Oberlin -- 79 -- Manchester (Ind.) -- 75 on Saturday, November 29 in Oberlin, Ohio --  The Yeoman won their second consecutive game with a 79-75 win over Manchester (Ind.) College at Phillips Gymnasium in Oberlin.  Five Oberlin players scored in double figures, led by forward Chris Ikpoh with 18 points on seven of 11 shooting from the floor.  Junior guard Tony Richardson scored 17 points and added four assists.  Cameron Leverett added 12 points and Alex Malone scored 11.  Chris Williams had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

B-W Picked Sixth in the OAC -- The B-W Yellow Jackets were tabbed to finish sixth in the rugged Ohio Athletic Conference in the OAC Preseason Coaches poll.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 331 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 611-396 in 38 years overall.
