The 12th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Men Beat Oberlin, 97-62, in Berea to Improve to 5-0 Overall

BEREA, OHIO —  Sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored a game-high 20 points while grabbing ten boards tonight (December 1, 2004)  as the 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated visiting Oberlin College, 97-62, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea to improve to 5-0 overall. With its loss, Oberlin fell to 1-4 overall.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 21 points, at 41-20 with 1:27 left, when senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored two points on a jumper assisted by senior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name).  At the half, the Yellow Jackets led 44-29.  In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 32 points at 84-52 with 4:37 left in the game when sophomore forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross) made a free throw to cap a 10-0 run en route to the 97-62 victory.  

In addition to Tori DavisThad Davis scored 15 points and added a game-high 14 rebounds.  Joining them in double figures was sophomore forward Matt Marks (Boardman) adding 14.

With his 15 points and 14 rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,447 career points and 714 career rebounds and is now 10th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list and ninth in rebounding.

Sophomore guard Quinton Spencer led Oberlin with 22 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. 

B-W will back in action on Saturday, December 4, when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College, 3-1 overall, at 3:00 p.m. in Ursprung.  The B-W versus Otterbein matchup pits the team picked to win this year's OAC title, B-W, against the team chosen second, Otterbein, in this year's OAC Coaches preseason poll.  It is also the OAC opener for each team.

Game Notes vs. Oberlin
 


The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host nonleague rival Oberlin College on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio at 8:00 p.m.  It is the second game of a women’s and men’s doubleheader.  In the first game, the B-W women played Grove City College of Pennsylvania at 6:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The 13th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will seek to win its fifth straight game to open the 2004-2005 season when it hosts traditional nonleague rival Oberlin College in the second game of a women’s and men’s doubleheader in Berea at the Ursprung Gymnasium.
        The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 overall and have opened the season by defeating the University of Mary Washington (64-57) and Gettysburg,  Pa.. College (59-57) at the Gettysburg Tournament on November 19-20, Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University (94-91) in Berea on Nov. 23 and Thiel. College (86-82) in Greenville, Pennsylvania last Saturday, Nov. 27, in its first four games.  B-W is also tabbed to win the 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference title by a vote of its coaches during the preseason.
        Oberlin enters tonight’s game with a 1-3 overall record folowing an 86-56 defeat at Adrian (Mich.) College last Saturday, Nov. 27.  The Yeomen began the season on Nov. 19-20 by losing twice at the Hamilton (N.Y.) College Tournament and then beat LaRoche, Pa. College on Nov. 23.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Oberlin College Series--  This is the 64th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Oberlin College in men’s basketball. B-W leads the series between the two schools, 48-15, including a thrilling, 75-66, victory in last year’s meeting on December 3, 2003 in Oberlin’s Phillips Gymnasium.  See more on this game on page 2.  B-W has also won nine straight games against the Yeomen.

The National Polls --  Baldwin-Wallace College enter’s this week ranked 13th nationally in Divisioin III by the D3hoops.com Internet Web site.  The Yellow Jackets were ranked 16th in the preseason poll.  B-W was also ranked in the preseason by The Sporting News and the DIIINews magazine poll.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6’4” sophomore swingman Matt Marks (Boardman) at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 22.8 points per game and rebounding with 10.8 rpg. He is canning 57.4 percent of his field goals (31-of-54) and tops the team with 14 blocked shots and 11 steals. Tori Davis is second in scoring at 16.8 ppg., second in rebounding with 7.8 rpg. and in blocks with 11. Tom Harrington is third in scoring at 10.5 ppg. and first with 25 assists and eight three-pointers. Keith Aufmuth is scoring 9.3 ppg. and is second with 12 assists and five treys.  Matt Marks is fifth in scoring at 6.5 ppg.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6’4” senior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5’11” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview).  Marks and Meyer are each averaging 6.5 and 4.3 respectively. Sekerak is scoring 3.0 ppg. and is second with seven steals. 

Oberlin Probable Starters -- The Yeomen only list 11 players on their entire roster.  Look for Head Coach Frank “Happy” Dobbs to start 5’10” senior Dewayne Evans at the point guard position and 6’1” senior Steve Reid and 6’1” sophomore and Quinton Spencer at the wing positions.  Look for 6’5” sophomore Matt Kaplan and 6’5” senior Ronnie Goins to play on the inside.  Spencer is one of the t explosive players in Division III.  He averages 31.5 ppg., grabs 11.5 rpg., has canned eight three-pointers, passed for 11 assists and made 11 steals. He goes to the basket a lot by virtue of his 32-of-52 foul shots (13 foul shots per game on average).  Spencer has also cannedd 43-of-84 field goal attempts for 51.2 percent.  Evans scores 8.5 ppg., grabs 3.8 rpg., tops the team with 16 assists and also has nine steals.  Kaplan scores 7.3 ppg., grabs 2.8 rpg. and has canned seven treys.  Reid averages 2.3 ppg. and 2.0 rpg., and Goins scores 3.3 ppg. and is second with 4.0 rpg.  Dobbs likes to play his starters as both Evans and Spencer are averaging 38.7 minutes per game and goins averages 35 mpg.  Off the bench, look for 5’9” freshman guards Matt Godwin and Mark Allen-Gifford and  6’5” junior forward Ethan Witovsy to all poissibly see action.  Godwin comes off the bench to score 10.8 ppg., grab 2.3 rpg. and is nine-of-33 from “three-point land”.

THE LAST MEETING BETWEEN B-W AND OBERLIN:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 75, Oberlin -- 66 in Oberlin, Ohio on December 3, 2004 -- The last time that the Yellow Jackets and Yeomen met, on December 3, in Oberlin, B-W won, 75-66, before 300 fans at Phillips Gymnasium.  Current junior All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth scored a then career-high 21 points, including five-of-six shooting from three-point range, passed for six assists and made three steals with NO turnovers in 34 minutes of action. In addition. current sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis had 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots, current senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis had 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots and current sophomore guard/ forward Matt Marks had a then career-high 10 markers. A key in the game was B-W outrebounding Oberlin, 46-32.  Oberlin was led by Alex Malone with 22 points.

In B-W's Last Game:  B-W -- 86, Thiel (Pa.)  -- 82 on Saturday, November 27 in Thiel, Pennsylvania -- The Yellow Jackets won their fourth straight game as they beat nonleague foe Thiel (Pa.) College, 86-82, on Saturday, November 27, in Greenville, Pennsylvania to improve to 4-0 overall.  Senior All-OAC forward Thad Davis led the way with a career-high 37 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked a career-high seven shots. Junior All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth added 16 points, sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and sophomore swingman Matt Marks chipped in with 12 points. B-W canned 31-of-39 foul shots, including 21-of-27 in the second half.

In Oberlin's Last Game:  Adrian College (Mich.) -- 86, Oberlin --  56 on Saturday, November 27 in Adrian, Ohio -- The Yeoman last played on Saturday, November 27, when they dropped an 86-56 decision at Adrian (Mich.) College to fall to 1-3 overall.  Despite the loss, sophomore guard Quinton Spencer put on a display by scoring a game-high 31 points, grabbed eight rebounds, passed for a pair of assists, blocked a shot and made four steals.  In addition, sophomore forward Matt Kaplan tallied 11 points. Oberlin shot just 33 percent from the floor (19-of-57), 19% from three-point range (four-of-19) and were outrebounded, 54-26.


Yellow Jacket Chatter

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters tonight’s game with Oberlin with 1,432 career points and 697 career rebounds and stands 10th on the all-time scoring list and ninth on the all-time rebounding list.  Thad had a career-high 37 points last Saturday at Thiel (Pa.), surpassing his previous high of 31 points last year at Ohio Northern University.

Tom Harrington is Efficent-- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington has played 149 minutes so far this year and committed just five turnovers.  He has a team-high 25 assists to give him an outstanding 5:1 assist to turnover ratio. Harrington has 275 career assists and led the OAC a year ago with 139.

Matt Marks Continues to be Perfect From the Foul Line -- Sophomore swingman Matt Marks canned all 22 of his foul shots last season and is four-of-four already this year.

B-W Picked First in the OAC -- The Yellow Jackets open 2004-2005 Ohio Athletic Conference play next Saturday, December 4 when they play host to the Otterbein College Cardinals at 3:00 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium.  B-W is tabbed to finish first in the OAC in the OAC Preseason Coaches poll which was conducted by conference call on November 3.  B-W received seven of nine first place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team so only nine first place votes were possible).  Otterbein was picked to finish second.

Three Return as All-OAC Players and One as an Academic All-OAC selection --  Senior forward Thad Davis returns as a first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference player from a year ago.  He was also a second-team All-Great Lakes Region pick by the D3hoops.com Web Site.  Joining Thad Davis on the 2003-2004 All-OAC team were sophomore forward Tori Davis as a second-team pick and junior guard Keith Aufmuth as an honorable mention choice.  In addition, senior point guard Tom Harrington was an Academic All-OAC selection.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 349 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  Bankson, who has been at B-W for 26 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 630-404 in 40 years overall.
