The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket Men Lose to Mount

Union, 80-74, in Berea and End Their Season

BEREA, OHIO —  Junior guard Brad Gerard scored a game-high 22 points tonight as sixth-seeded Mount Union College upset third-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College, 80-74, in a quarter final game of the 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  With its win, Mt. Union advances to the OAC Final Four on Friday.

With its victory, Mt. Union improves to 17-9 overall. With its loss, B-W dropped to 18-8 overall and ends its season.

In addition to Gerard, junior forward Brett Hershberger scored 14 points, sophomore forward Kyle Karpinski had 12 points and senior forward Rob Paulauskas had 11 points for the Purple Raiders.  Sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points.  He was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Cleveland/Brooklyn)  with 15 points, freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor)  had 12 points and junior guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/Holy Name) had 11 markers.

In the first half, there were eight lead changes and one tie score.  B-W led by as many as six points at 10-4 with remaining before intermission  when Aufmuth canned a three-pointer.  Then Mt. Union outscored B-W 21-6 to lead by as many as nine points at 25-16 at 8:00 when junior forward Chris Blakely scored on a layup.  B-W would then close the half by outscoring the Raiders 20-7 to take a 36-32 advantage at the break. In the second half, Mt. Union outscored B-W 33-16 and held its largest lead of 11 points on two separate occassions with the last one being at 71-60 with 1:46 left when junior guard Clay Sanders canned two foul shots.

With his nine points tonight, Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) now has 1,341 career points and is 13th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list.

Game Notes #26 vs. Mount Union (OAC Tournament)


The third-seeded BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host the sixth-seeded Mount Union College Purple Raiders in the second round of the 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday, February 25 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.  The winner advances to Friday night's OAC Final Four and semi finals and will play at 6:00 p.m.
 

 

RADIO --  All Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament games will be broadcast on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and on the College Internet Web Site.  Tonight's game will be broadcast by WBWC.  The pregame show from Berea will begin at 7:15 p.m.  In addition, WBWC is also the host site of the 2004 OAC Championships.  Regardless of how B-W does, WBWC will carry both OAC men's Final Four games on Friday, Feb. 27 (6:00 and 8:00 p.m.) and the men's (7:30 p.m.) and women's (3:00 p.m.) championship games on Saturday, Feb. 28.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to advance to the OAC Tournament Final Four and semi finals as they host tonight's quarterfinal matchup against arch-rival Mount Union College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  B-W enters this game as the third seed in tournament. Mount Union is the sixth seed.  B-W has also defeated Mt. Union twice earlier this season (see more in the Series Notes).
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 18-7 overall and 13-5 OAC record following their 86-76 loss against Otterbein College on Saturday in Westerville.  The Yellow Jackets have lost two straight games following a season-high nine-game winning streak.
        The Purple Raiders enter this game with a 16-9 overall and an 11-7 OAC record following its 60-54 win against Muskingum College on Saturday in Alliance.  Mount Union has won three straight games and four of its last five overall.

The Tournament Pairings -- In other quarter final action on Wednesday, February 25, and in the top half of the bracket, OAC regular season champion and No.1-seed John Carroll University will host the winner of the ninth-seeded Heidelberg College and No.8-seeded Marietta College.  In Ada, No. 4-seed Ohio Northern University hosts Capital University.  On the bottom of the bracket, B-W hosts Mt. Union, aCollege versus No.7-seeded Muskingum College game.

The All-Time Baldwin-Wallace Versus Mount Union All-Time Series --  This is the 108th all-time meeting between the Baldwin-Wallace College and Mount Union College in men's basketball.  B-W leads the series, 66-42 follwing their back-to-back wins this season.  Last year, the Purple Raiders won two of three games, including the game that led to the elimination of the Yellow Jackets in the OAC Tournament. 

The First Time They Met This Year:  On Wednesday, December 17, 2003 in Alliance, Ohio:  Baldwin-Wallace --  71, Mount Union --  66 --  The Yellow Jackets broke from a 66-66 tie and scored the game's final five points in the final 2:50 to defeat the Purple Raiders, 71-66, at the Timken Physical Education Building in Alliance.  Freshman forward Tori Davis' (Elyria/ Open Door Christian) foul shot with 49 seconds left game gave B-W the lead for good and freshman guard Matt Marks (Boardman) and sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) sealed the win with two more foul shots each.  Mt. Union senior guard Brad Gerard led all scorers with 29 points, including seven three-pointers.  Junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) led four B-W double figure scorers with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Last Time They Met This Year: On Wednesday, January 28, 2004 in Berea, Ohio:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 85, Mt. Union --  82  -- Baldwin-Wallace rallied from a 25-point first half deficit to defeat Mount Union, 85-82, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  Matt Marks led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points.  He was joined in double figure scoring by sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) with 18 points, Thad Davis with 16 and Tori Davis with 16.  Leading the Purple Raiders was sophomore forward/ center Kyle Karpinski with 19 points.  Joining him in double figures were senior forward Rob Paulauskas with 15 points, junior wing players Chris Blakley with 12 points and Brad Gerard with 11.  

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis, 6'3" freshman Tori Davis  and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks on the inside.  At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth.  Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 19.4 ppg. and leads the OAC in rebounding at 10.4 rpg.  Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 14.2 ppg., rebounding with 7.6 rpg. and leads the OAC with 54 blocked shots. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 13.4 ppg and is first with 43 three-pointers. Harrington is scoring 8.5 ppg. and tops the OAC with 135 assists and has canned 34 treys.  Marks is averaging 7.8 ppg. and 3.0 rpg.  Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'2" sophomore guard/ forward Dan Gundert (Wellington) and 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

The Mount Union College  Probable Starters and Preview--Look for Head Coach Lee Hood to start 5'11" junior guard Clay Sanders at the point.  At the wing poistions will be 5'10" junior  Chris Blakely and 5'10" junior Brad Gerard.  On the inside,  6'6" senior forward Rob Paulauskas and 6'5' senior forward  Curtis Stevens will start.  Gerard tops the team in scoring 11.6 ppg. and in three-pointers with 75.  Paulauskas is second in scoring with 11.3 ppg and also grabs 3.5 rpg. Stevens is fourth ins coring at  at 9.6 ppg., grabs 4.0 rpg. and tops the team with 24 steals.  Blakely averages 8.8 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 5.4 rpg.  Sanders is scoring 3.8 ppg. and leads the team in assists with  121.  Off the bench, look for Hood to play 6'6" sophomore forward Kyle Karpinski who is third on the team in scoring at 10.6 ppg and also grabs 4.4 rpg Also seeing signifivant playing time from Hood will be 6'2" junior wing Brett Hershberger, 6'3" freshman wing Jarrod Ferwerda and  6'2" freshman wing Eric Fender.   Backing up  Sanders at the point will be 6'1" junior Tony Basalla.

In B-W's Last Game:  Otterbein --  86,  Baldwin-Wallace -- 76 on Saturday, February 21 in Westerville, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets lost to the Otterbein Cardinals, 86-76, last Saturday, in Westerville.  Despite the loss, junior forward Thad Davis scored 23 points, sophomore Keith Aufmuth had 22 and freshman guard Matt Marks added 13.

In Mount Union's's Last Game:  Mount Union --60, Muskingum--  54 on Saturday,  February 21 in Alliance, Ohio --  The Purple Raiders defeated Muskingum College, 60-54, on Saturday, in Alliance for their third straight win and fourth in the past five games.  Mount Union was led by junior wing player Brad Gerard and senior forward/ center Curtis Stevens with 12 points each, and senior forward Rob Paulauskas had 10.

15 in the Last 16 Years --  B-W has already clinched a 15th season in the last 16 years with a .500 or better record. 

Thad Davis is 13th All-Time in Scoring--  Junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 23 points on Saturday against Otterbein and enters the  Mt. Union game with 1,332 career points to rank 13th all-time.  Next on the list is No. 12 Ron Myers (1977-80) who scored 1,361 career points. His seven rebounds give him 643 career rebounds which ranks seventh all-time.

The OAC Statistical Leaders --  Thad Davis tops the OAC in rebounding at 10.4 rpg.  Younger brother, freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) leads the OAC with 54 blocked shots.  Junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) leads the OAC with 136 assists.

Double-Doubles --  Thad and Tori Davis have combined for 18 double-doubles of points and rebounds this year.  Thad has 11 and Tori seven.  Tom Harrington has two double-doubles of points and assists.

Bankson Continues to Climb Win Chart --  Veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson enters the Capital game with  at 345 wins at B-W 626 in his career.  Bankson is  345-289 in 24 years at B-W and  626-403 in 39 years overall as a head coach at Port Huron (Mich.) High School, 232 at Lorain County Community College and B-W.

Don't Foul Marks and Meyer --  Freshman guard/ forward players Matt Marks (Boardman) and Nick Meyer (Mentor) have combined to connect on  56 of 64 foul shots for 87.5 percent.  Marks is 22 of 22 and Meyer is 34 of 42.
