Baldwin-Wallace College Defeats Muskingum College, 50-39, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior forward Thad Davis(Elyria/Open Door) scored 13 points today as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team won its fourth straight game and defeated visting Muskingum College, 50-39, in a key Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
With its victory, B-W improves to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in the OAC and is all alone in second place in the OAC (depending upon the outcome of the John Carroll at Otterbein game tonight).  With its loss, Muskingum College drops to 9-9 overall and 5-7 in the OAC.
In addition to Thad Davis, freshman forwards Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) and Nick Meyer (Mentor) each had 12 markers for B-W as the Yellow Jackets tied their season-high winning streak.  Sophomore backup forward Devin Barnhouse led Muskingum with nine points. 
In the first half, B-W led by as many as four points at 9-5 with 16:09 left before the intermission when Thad Davis canned a jumper.   Muskingum then outscored B-W 15-8 to take a three-point advantage at 20-17 with 6:49 left when junior guard Tom Price canned a three-pointers.  Thad Davis then scored the final four points of the half and B-W led at the intermission, 21-20.  In the second half, after there were eight lead changes, B-W took control.  The Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead for good on a three-pointer by Meyer with 11:49 left and led by as many as 12 points at the 2:24 mark when Thad Davis scored on a layup.
 
With his 13 points today, Thad Davis now has 1,212 career points and is 16th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list. Next on the scoring chart is Bob Scelza (1981-84) who scored 1,229 career points.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action next Wednesday, February 4, when they travel to Tiffin to play Heidelberg College at the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team plays host to Ohio Athletic Conference arch-rival Muskingum College on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.  Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
 


RADIO --  All away and some select home B-W men's basketball games are broadcast on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and on the College Internet Web Site.  Today's game will not be broadcast.  WBWC will do live reports of the men's game during the women's basketball game at Muskingum.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its fifth straight game this winter and 10th straight overall against OAC rival Muskingum College when they host the Fighting Muskies in the Ursprung Gymnaium in Berea.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 13-5 overall and 8-3 OAC record following their 85-82 comeback victory againsr OAC arch-rival Mount Union College in Berea on Wednesday.  The win was the Yellow Jackets fourth straight and fifth in its last six games.
        Muskingum enters this game with a 9-9 overall and 5-6 OAC record following its 75-64 lost against first place John Carroll University in  New Concord on Wednesday.  The loss ended a two-game Fighting Muskie win streak.

The Current OAC Standings -- John Carroll currently leads the OAC with a 9-2 record.  With its win against Mt. Union combined with an Otterbein overtime loss to Heidelberg, B-W is now sole possesion of second place with a 8-3 record.  There is a four-way tie for third place as Capital University, Mt. Union, Otterbein and Ohio Northern University are all 6-4.   Muskingum sits all alone in seventh place with a 5-6 record.

The All-Time Baldwin-Wallace Versus Muskingum All-Time Series--  This is the 81st all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Muskingum College in men's basketball.  The Fighting Muskies lead the all-time series between the two schools, 47-33, but B-W has won nine straight games.  The Yellow Jackets won the last meeting, 69-64 in overtime, on January 17, 2004 in New Concord.  The last Muskingum win came on  January 1, 2000 in New Concord by the final score of 77-65.

The First Time They Met This Year:  On Saturday, January 17, 2004 in New Concord, Ohio:  Baldwin-Wallace --  69, Muskingum --  64 in O.T.  --  Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) and freshman forward and brother Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) combined to score 25 points and grab 11 rebounds in the second half and overtime as B-W defeated Muskingum, 69-64 in overtime, in New Concord on January 17.  Thad davis led all scorers with 22 points and also grabbed eight rebounds.  Tori Davis had a double-double with 18 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds and junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Holy Name) had 10 points and seven assists.  Sophomore center Cole Pittis led four Fighting Muskies in double figures with 18 points as he canned seven of eight shots from the floor..

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis, 6'3" freshman Tori Davis and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks (Boardman) on the inside.  At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth.  Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 19.6 ppg. and leads the OAC in rebounding at 10.6 rpg.  Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 14.3 ppg. and 8.0 rpg.  He also leads the OAC with 43 blocked shots. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 13.1 ppg and is first with 32 three-pointers. Harrington is scoring 9.1 ppg. and tops the team and OAC with 107 assists and has canned 30 treys.  Marks is averaging 7.9 ppg. and 2.5 rpg.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'2" sophomore guard/ forward Dan Gundert (Wellington) and 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

The Muskingum Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Dr. Jim Burson to start 6'2" junior Matt Dansby, 6'3" sophomore Zach Ross and 5'8" freshman Jeff Smallwood in the backcourt.  Look for  6'4" sophomore Cole Pittis and 6'3" junior Cliff Sprang to start in the post.  Ross tops the Muskies in scoring at 15.3 ppg, leads the team with 50 made three-pointers, and is third in rebounding at 4.5 rpg.  Dansby leads the team in rebounding at 4.8 rpg., and has a team-leading 35 steals.  Pittis is second on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg. and shoots an OAC-leading 69.6 percent from the floor (80 of 115).  Cliff Sprang scores 4.2 ppg. and leads the team with 51assists.
        Off the bench, look for Burson to play 6'7" sophomore center  Jason Trout, 5'10" junior guard Tom Price, 6'5" sophomore forward Devin Barnhouse, 6'4" junior post Roy Skidmore, 6'3" freshman wing Graig Turson and 6'3" freshman forward Andy Mix.

In B-W's Last Game:  Baldwin-Wallace --  85,  Mount Union -- 82  on Wednesday, January 28 in Berea, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets overcame a  25-point first half deficit to defeat the Purple Raiders of Mount Union College, 85-82, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea on Wednesday.  Four Yellow Jackets scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth's game-high 20 markers.  Freshman guard Matt Marks had 19 points and brothers Thad and Tori Davis each added 16.  B-W trailed 48-23 in the first half as Mt. Union made 19 of its first 21 shots.  After trailing by 17 points at halftime, 51-34, B-W then outscored the Purple Raiders 29-12 to tie the game at 63-63.  B-W then broke from a 68-all tie to outscore Mt. Union 18-14 and secure the win.  B-W canned 59.3 percent of its floor shots (34 of 60) and outrebounded Mt. Union, 33-23.

In Muskingum's Last Game:  John Carroll --75, Muskingum --  64 on Wednesday,  January 28 in Muskingum , Ohio --  The Fighting Muskies were defeated by OAC-leader John Carroll University, 75-64, in New Concord on Wednesday and fell to 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the OAC. Despite the loss, sophomore forward Zach Ross had a game-high 23 points.  Joining Ross in double figures was freshman guard Jeff Smallwood with 16 points and sophomore center Cole Pittis with 13.

Yellow Jacket Chatter

Thad Davis Closing in on 1,200 and 15th Place --  Junior forward Thad Davis enters the Muskingum game with 1,199 career points and stands 16th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list.  He needs one point to reach 1,200 and 30 to catch Bob Scelza (1981-84) for 15th place.  He also has 573 career rebounds to rank eighth all-time.

Aufmuth Continues "HOT" Streak -- Sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth had a career-high 22 points last Saturday at Wilmington and added 20 more on Wednesday against Mt. Union.  In the two games, Aufmuth has canned 16 of 27 shots from the floor, including seven of 13 three-pointers.

The OAC Statistical Catagory Leaders --  Thad Davis leads the OAC inrebounding at 10.6 rpg.  His younger brother, freshman forward Tori Davis, tops the OAC with 43 blocked shots.  Junior point guard Tom Harrington leads the OAC in both assists with 107 and three-point shooting at 44.1 percent (30 of 68).

Four Straight Wins Ties Season-High --  B-W's current four-game winning streak ties a season-high from earlier this season.  After losing its season-opener to nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon (Va.), B-W reeled off four consecutive wins.

The Legends Bankson and Burson Combine for 1,143 Career Wins --  B-W veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson has 621 career wins in 38 years as a head coach.  Muskingum Head Coach Jim Burson has 522 in 37 years at his alma mater.  hat's a combined 1,143 career wins between the two legends.
