Muskingum College Upsets the 17th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Men's

Basketball Team, 66-62, in New Concord; B-W Falls to 5-2

BEREA, OHIO — Junior guard Zach Ross scored a game-high 21 points today (December 11, 2004) as Muskingum College upset the 17th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team , 66-62, in New Concord at the Muskingum HPER Center.

With its victory, the Fighting Muskies improved to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W fell to 5-2 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.

Muskingum led the final 13:49 in the first half with its largest lead coming at 3:34 when Ross hit a three-pointer to put the Fighting Muskies up 11 points at 29-18.  In the second half, B-W was able to regain the lead, 51-50, when sophomore guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry) connected on a layup with 7:52 remaining. Ross answered right back with another three-pointer at 5:29 as the Fighting Muskies never trailed the rest of the way.

Leading the way for B-W was sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) with 17 points. Joining him in double figures were senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) with 16 points and sophomore forward Matt Marks (Boardman) with 10 points. Both Thad and Tori Davis grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.  With his 16 points and 13 rebounds today, Thad Davis now has 1,479 career points and 743 career rebounds and is 10th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list and seventh in rebounding.

In addition to Ross, freshman guard Jeremy Ady scored 13 points for Muskingum. For the game, Muskingum shot 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from beyond the arc and 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the charity stripe.

The B-W men will be back in action next Wednesday, December 15 when they host OAC-rival Ohio Northern University at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team travels to New Concord, to  play Muskingum College in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on December 11, 2004 at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The 17th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will seek to get back on the winning track when it travels to New Concord, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference foe Muskingum College.  Both B-W and Muskingum are coming off of losses.
        The Yellow Jackets are 5-1 overall and have opened the season by defeating the University of Mary Washington (64-57) and Gettysburg,  Pa.. College (59-57) at the Gettysburg Tournament on November 19-20, Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University (94-91) in Berea on Nov. 23, Thiel  College (86-82) in Greenville, Pennsylvania on Nov. 27, and Oberlin College (97-62) on Wednesday, December 1, in its first five games.  B-W received its first loss of the season it its OAC opener against Otterbein College (65-63) on Saturday, Dec. 4.
        Muskingum enters today’s game with a 4-3 overall and 1-2 record in the OAC following a 73-68 overtime loss in Alliance at Mount Union College on Wednesday, Dec. 8.  The Fighting Muskies began the season at 4-0 overall and defeating Thiel (85-50) and Juniata, Pa. College (72-53) at the Juniata Tournament on Nov. 20-21 and both Denison University (59-54) at home on Nov. 27 and Kenyon College (81-74) at Denison on Nov. 28 in the OAC-NCAC Shootout.  Since, the Muskies have lost three straight games and have been beaten at Bethany, W.Va. College (55-53) on Dec. 1, Capital University (70-59) at home on Dec. 4 and at Mt. Union in overtime.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Muskingum College Series--  This is the 82nd all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Muskingum College in men’s basketball. Muskingum leads the series between the two schools, 47-34, but B-W has won 10 straight games, including twice last season. The Yellow Jackets won the last meeting, 50-39, on January 31, 2004 in Berea. The last Muskingum win came on Jan. 8, 2000 in New Concord when the Fighting Muskies prevailed, 77-65.

The National Polls --  Baldwin-Wallace College is ranked 17th nationally in this week’s Division III national poll by the D3hoops.com Internet Web site.  The Yellow Jackets were ranked 16th in the preseason poll, 13th the second week and 12th last week.  B-W was also ranked in the preseason by The Sporting News and the DIIINews magazine poll.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6’4” sophomore swingman Matt Marks (Boardman) at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.0 points per game, and grabs a team-leading 12.5 rebounds per game.  He is also canning 55.3 percent of his field goals (42-of-76) and has a team-high 16 blocked shots.  Tori Davis is second in scoring at 18.8 ppg., second with 8.0 rpg., second with 15 blocked shots and third with six steals, and is shooting a team-leading 62.5 percent from the floor (40-of-64) and 70.2% from the foul line (33-of-47).  Tom Harrington is third in scoring at 9.0 ppg., first with 39 assists and  10 three-pointers and has committed just 10 turnovers in 211 minutes of action.  Keith Aufmuth is scoring 7.7 ppg. and is second with 17 assists and six treys.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6’4” senior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5’11” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview).  Marks is averaging 6.7 ppg., Meyer  is scoring 4.2 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 2.7 ppg. and is second with 10 steals. 

Muskingum College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Dr. Jim Burson to start 6’2” senior Matt Dansby and 6’3” junior Zach Ross in the backcourt along with 5’9” sophomore Jeff Smallwood.  On the inside, look for 6’3” senior Cliff Sprang and 6’4” junior Cole Pittis to start.  Ross is the top scorer at 16.1 ppg. and has canned 18-of-34 three-pointers and 27-of-30 foul shots.  Pittis is second in scoring at 12.3 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and has canned 32-of-52 field goals this year.  Senior Roy Skidmore, a 6’4” forward, comes off the bench and is third in scoring at 11.8 ppg. and grabs 4.7 rpg.  Smallwood scores 9.0 ppg. and has 21 assists. The athletic Dansby scores 3.1 ppg. and tops the team with 5.1 rpg. and 11 steals  A versitile Sprang scores 3.1 ppg., grabs 5.0 rpg., has passed for a team-high 27 assists and made 10 steals.
        Off the bench, look for 6’0” freshman guard Jeremy Ady, 6’4” senior forward/center Roy Skidmore, and 6’3” sophomore guard/forward Graig Turson to see significant action.  6’6” sophomore forward Jason Dicken and 6’5” freshman forward/center Andy Glass may also see playing time.

THE LAST MEETING BETWEEN B-W AND MUSKINGUM:   Baldwin-Wallace-- 50,  Muskingum --  39 in Berea, Ohio on January 31, 2004 -- The last time that the Yellow Jackets and Fighting Muskies met, on January 31, in Berea, Baldwin-Wallace defeated the Muskingum, 50-39, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium. Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was current sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Also chipping in was current senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis with 13 points and eight rebounds and current sophomore wing player Matt Marks with 12 points.

In B-W's Last Game, on December 4, 2004 versus Otterbein:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 63, Otterbein 65, -- In B-W’s last game, a 65-63 loss to OAC-rival Otterbein College last Saturday, Dec., in Berea, sophomore All-OAC forward  Tori Davis led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds.  In addition, senior All-OACforward Thad Davis scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds, and Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out six assists.  With its loss, B-W fell to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.

In Muskingum’s Last Game:  Mount Union College--  73, Muskingum -- 68 in Overtime on December 8 in Alliance -- In Muskingum’s last game, a 73-68 overtime loss at Mt. Union College on Wednesday, Dec. 8, the Fighting Muskies were led by junior forward Cole Pittis’ 17 points and seven rebounds. He was one of three Muskies in double digits as junior guard Zach Ross had 12 points and three-pointers and senior center Roy Skimore came off the bench to score 12 points and grab five caroms. The loss was also the third straight for Muskingum.

Steve Bankson and Dr. Jim Burson -- Baldwin-Wallace College Head Coach Steve Bankson (631) and Muskingum’s Dr. Jim Burson (529) have combined to win 1,160 games and are a combined 1160-814 in 78 years as head coaches.  See more Steve Bankson information below. 

AND WOW!!!!!  --  Sometime later this winter, the duo of Bankson and Burson will have combined to coach in more than 2,000 collegiate basketball games.

Davis Continues to Climb on the Scoring and Rebounding Charts; He Needs 39 More Points to be Ninth All-Time and Reach the 1,500-Point Plateau -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters tonight’s game with Oberlin with 1,461 career points and 730 career rebounds and stands 10th on the all-time scoring list and seventhn the all-time rebounding list.  Next up on the list for Thad Davis is Terry Allerton (1964-68) with 1,499 career points and then current B-W administrator Harvey Hopson (1965-69) with 1,509 points.

Tori Davis and Keith Aufmuth Getting Close to the 500-Point Plateau -- Sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis and junior All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth both are nearing the 500-point plateau. Entering the Muskingum game, Tori Davis has 485 career points and Aufmuth has 480 points.

Tom Harrington is 10th All-Time in Assists-- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington has 289 career assists and is 10th all-time.  He led the OAC a year ago with 139 assists.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 350 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  He is 350-291 in 26 years at B-W.  Bankson has a career mark of 631-405 in 40 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasions at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
