B-W Defeats Mount Union, 71-66, in Alliance

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds this evening as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Mount Union College, 71-66, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Timken P.E. Building in Alliance. Tori Davis' (Elyria/Open Door Christian School) freethrow with 10 seconds left in the game put the Yellow Jackets up for good. In addition, B-W withstood a game high 29 points from Brad Gerard, including seven three-pointers.

With its win, B-W improves to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAC. With its loss, Mount Union falls to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.

In addition to Thad Davis, freshman guard Matt Marks (Boardman) had a career-high 11 points and three rebounds, forward Tori Davis had 10 points and seven rebounds, and junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) had 10 points including two three pointers.

Wilmington was led by Brad Gerard with 29 points and seven three-pointers, Chris Blakely had 12 points and three three-pointers, Kyle Karpinski had 11 points and Rob Paulauskas had 10 points and 10 boards.

In the first half, Mount Union led by as many as 11 points, at 22-11 with 10:26 left before the intermission, when Gerard canned his only two point basket of the game. Mount Union also led at halftime, 35-32. In the second half, the Yellow Jackets outscored the Purple Raiders 39-31 and took the lead for good on a Tori Davis free throw, at 67-66.

B-W clinched the game when sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) connected on two free throws with 10 seconds remaining in the game.  For the game, B-W canned 51.0 percent of its field goals (25 of 49). Mount Union made 11 of 22 three-pointers for 50.0 percent but was only 24 of 64 shooting overall for 37.5%.

The Yellow Jacket men will be back in action this Saturday, December 20, when they host Marietta in Berea at 3:00 p.m. B-W will then travel to the College of Wooster Tournament after the Holiday on December 29-30.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Alliance to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at the Timken Physical Education Center at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its second straight and sixth of its last seven games when it travels to Alliance to face OAC arch-rival Mount Union College.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 5-2 overall and 1-1 OAC record following their 95-94 victory last Saturday against Wilmington College at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  B-W has won five of its last six games and its only two losses this winter have been to nationally-ranked teams: 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon, Va. College (59-50) and 17th-ranked Otterbein College (66-63).
        Mount Union enters tonight's game with a 5-2 overall and 2-0 OAC record following its 84-73 victory last Saturday to Otterbein.  The Purple Raiders have won three straight games, including their first two OAC games.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Mount Union Series--  This is the 98th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Mount Union College in men's basketball.  B-W leads the series, 64-43, but Mount Union has won the last two games, including a 67-58 win against B-W in Alliance in last year's OAC Tournament.  The Purple Raiders won two of three meetings a year ago.  B-W's last win was an 87-83 victory in Berea last December.  That win marked the 600th career victory for Head Coach Steve Bankson.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks (Boardman) on the inside.  At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 18.6 ppg. and rebounding at 12.4 rpg. Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 13.7 ppg and 8.3 rpg . Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 12.3 ppg and is 12 of 29 from three-point rangefor 41.1 %.  Tom Harrington is scoring 7.6 ppg. and tops the team with 39 assists.  Marks is averaging 5.7 ppg. and 1.7 rpg.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time.  In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play. 

The Mount Union Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Lee Hood to start 6'4" senior forward Rob Paulauskas, 6'5" junior wing Chris Blakely, 5'10" junior gurad Brad Gerard, 5'11" junior point guard Clay Sanders and 6'8" senior forward Curtis Stevens.  Paulauskas leads the team in scoring at 12.7 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and shoots 83.3 percent (25 of 30) from the foul line.  The athletic Blakely is leads the team in rebounding at 7.4 rpg and blocked shots with 11, and is fourth in scoring with 8.9 ppg.  Gerard is second in scoring at 10.3 ppg. and tops the team with 17 three-pointers.  Sanders scores 3.1 ppg. and tops the squad with 29 assists.  Stevens scores 6.4 ppg.
         Off the bench, look for Hood to play 6'6" sophomore forward Kyle Karpinski, 6'3" freshman guard Jarrod Ferwerda, 6'2" junior guard Brett Hershberger, 5'9" sophomore point guard Malachi Hall and 6'1" junior point guard Tony Basalla.  Karpinski is third in scoring at 10.3 ppg. and rebounding with 4.4 rpg.  Ferwerda scores 5.7 ppg. and has canned nine treys, Hershberger scores 5.1 ppg. and Hall scores 4.0 ppg. and is second with 18 assists.

In B-W's Last Game:  B-W -- 95, Wilmington --  94 on Saturday, December 13 in Berea, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets got back on the winning track as they defeated OAC foe Wilmington College, 95-94, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  Leading the way was junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis who recorded his seventh double-double of the season with a season and game-high 24 points and game-high 13 rebounds.  Junior point guard Tom Harrington chipped in with a season-high 20 points and game high eight assists.  Freshman forward Tori Davis also had 18 points and nine rebounds.  Thad Davis gave the Yellow Jackets the win when he grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup with five seconds remaining.  B-W also overcame a "hot shooting" Wilmington team that made an OAC-record 19 three-pointers as a team (19 of 32 for another OAC-record 59.4%).

In Mount Union's Last Game:  Mount Union-- 84 -- Otterbein-- 73 on Saturday, December 13 in Alliance, Ohio --  The Purple Raiders won their third straight game as they defeated the previously 17th-ranked Otterbein Cardinals, 84-73, in Alliance.  Leading the way for Mount Union was junior guard Brad Gerard with a game-high 19 points, including five three-pointers.  Also scoring in double figures were backup forward Kyle Karplinski with 18 points, Jason Smith with 12 points and Rob Paulauskas with 10 points.  Junior forward Chris Blakely pulled down a game and career-high 21 rebounds, including 16 on the defensive end of the court, and also had five blocked shots.


Yellow Jacket Chatter

Davis Doubles Pleasure -- Junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) had five straight double figure scoring and rebounding games to begin the 2003-2004 season and has had a double-double in six of seven games.  Only a nine-rebound game against Otterbein two weeks ago keeps Davis from being eight-of-eight.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 332 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 613-398 in 38 years overall.

Harrington Has Career-High -- Junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma heights Holy Name) had a career-high 21 points, eight assists and a season-high five rebounds in the win versus Wilmington.

He's Really Not the Other Davis -- Freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) is the brother of junior Thad Davis.  Tori, making his own mark on the court, is averaging 13.7 ppg., 8.3 rpg., shoots 55.1% from the floor and has 10 blocked shots.  He had aa career-high 18 points against Wilmington.

The B-W Women Put Unbeaten Streak on the Line Versus Mount Union -- The B-W women's basketball team, ranked 16th in Division III and 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC, host the Mount Union women.  It is the home opener for the Yellow Jacket women who have beaten the two teams (Wilminghton and Otterbein) that were picked by the OAC Coaches to finish ahead of them.  B-W beat both Wilmington (73-67) and Otterbein (71-59) "on the road".
