The Baldwin-Wallace College Men Beat OAC-Rival Mt. Union, 74-71, in Berea to

Win Fifth Straight Game and Improve to 10-2

BEREA, OHIO —  Brothers Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) and Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) each contributed a double-double tonight (January 5, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College, 74-71, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  The victory was B-W's fifth straight.

Thad Davis, a senior forward, scored a team-high 28 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Tori Davis, a sophomore forward had 21 points and 10 rebounds.  Thad Davis also blocked a game-tying shot attempt by Mt. Union junior forward Brett Hershberger as time expired to preserve the win.

With its win, B-W is now 10-2 overall and 3-2 in the OAC.  With its loss, Mt. Union fell to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the OAC and broke a two-game win streak.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 11 points on three separate occassions with the last one being at 35-24 with 1:23 left before halftime when Thad Davis scored on a jumper. The Yellow Jackets also led at halftime, 39-30. In the second half, B-W increased its lead to as 15 points at 62-47 when Tori Davis scored on a three-point play with 10:00 left in the game. Mt. Union then outscored B-W 21-7 bover the next 8:30 to close to within 69-68 when senior guard Brad Gerard scored on a layup with 1:30 left.  The Davis brothers then made five-of-six foul shots to offset a Hershberger trey.

With his 28 points and 12 rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,590 career points and 810 career rebounds.  He is now seventh on the Yellow Jacket all-time scoring list and fifth in rebounding.

Mt. Union was led by junior center Kyle Karpsinski with a game-high 30 points and Hershberger also scored 19 points and canned five treys.

B-W will be back in action on Saturday, January 8 when it travel to Wilmington, Ohio to play the Wilmington Quakers in an OAC game at the Fred Razik Arena at 3:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its fifth straight game overall and its third straight in the Ohio Athletic Conference when it plays rival Mount Union College in Berea.
        B-W enters this game with a 9-2 overall and 2-2 OAC record following winning a tournament championship at Hampden-Sydney (Va.) with wins against Hood, Md., 88-58, and host Hampden-Sydney, 76-5-67, on December 29-30, 2004.  It was B-W’s second tournament title this year.
        Mt. Union enters this game with a 5-6 overall and 1-3 OAC record following its 2-1 finish at the annual Cactus Hoop Jam Tournament in Pheonix, Arizona.  Mt. Union lost 74-54 to nationally-ranked Albion (Mich.) on Dec. 27 and then beat both Drew (N.J.), 93-62 on Dec. 28., and Colorado College, 68-64, on Dec. 30.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Mount Union Series--  This is the 109th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Mount Union College in men's basketball.  B-W leads the series, 66-43 after claiming victories in both of the regular season meetings last year; however they lost to the Purple Raiders in the quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament, 82-74, in Berea on February 25, 2004.

The National Polls --  Baldwin-Wallace College was not ranked in the weekly D3hoops.com Internet poll prior to the publishing of this set of men’s basketball game notes.  The last rankings release was on December 19, 2004.  The next rankings release is on Tuesday, January 4, 2005.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6’4” sophomore swingman Matt Marks (Boardman) at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.1 points per game, rebounding at 13.2 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 25 and is canning 57.5 percent of his field goals (84-of-146).  Tori Davis is second in scoring at 16.5 ppg., rebounding with 8.0 rpg. and blocked shots with 21.  He is also shooting a team-high 61.3 percent from the floor (68-of-111).  Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 9.8 points per game, second in assists with 34, and first with 22 three-pointers.  Tom Harrington is fifth in scoring at 6.8 ppg., first with 76 assists, and second with 13 three-pointers and has committed just 20 turnovers in 374 minutes of action.  Matt Marks is fourth in scoring at 6.9 ppg.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6’4” senior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5’11” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview).  Meyer is averaging 4.5 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 2.7 ppg. and is first with 13 steals. 

The Mount Union College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Lee Hood to start  senior guards  Clay Sanders, 6’0”, and Brad Gerard, 5’10”, in the backcourt.  At the wing positions look for Coach Hood to start 6’1” senior Brett Hershberger and 6’5” senior Chris Blakely and down low at the center, look for him to start 6’6” junior Kyle Karpinski.  Karpinski tops the team in scoring at 16.6 ppg.,is second in rebounding at 6.6 rpg. and he tops the team in blocks with 20.  Hershberger is second on the team in scoring at 14.5 ppg. and third in rebounding at 3.8 rpg.  He has also canned a team and OAC leading 34 three-pointers.  Gerard is third in scoring at 11.4 ppg. and has hit 26 three-pointers.  Blakely is averaging 7.4 ppg. and tops the team in rebounding pulling down 9.1 rpg., while also leading the team in steals with 14.  Sanders scores 4.3 ppg. and is second in the OAC and tops the team in assists averaging 4.9 apg.
        Off the bench look for Coach Hood to play 6’1” senior guard Tony Basalla, 6’2” sophomore guard Eric Fender and  6’7” sophomore center Jason Smith.  Basalla is averaging 1.3 ppg. and Fender is averaging 4.5 ppg. and is shooting a team-high 46.4 percent from three-point range (13-of-28).  Smith is scoring 2.7 ppg. and grabbing 2.7 rpg.

In the First Game of the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament, on December 29, 2004: Baldwin-Wallace -- 88, Hood (Md.)--- 58, The Yellow Jackets advanced to the championship game of the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament with a 88-58 win over Hood (Md.) in the opening round.   Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was sophomore forward Chad Clark (Fremont/Ross) with 17 points.  Three other Yellow Jackets were in double figures including junior guard Keith Aufmuth with 15, and senior guard Tom Harrington and junior forward Charod Hale with 10 each.  Harrington added a season-high 11 assists while Charod Hale chipped in with a team-high nine boards.  The Davis brothers grabbed eight rebounds a piece.

In B-W's Last Game, on December 30, 2004 in the championship of the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 75, Hampden-Sydney 67, -- The Yellow Jackets captured the title at the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title with a 75--67 win against host Hampden-Sydney College on December 30 and improved to 9-2 overall.  B-W was led by senior forward Thad Davis with a game-high 27 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.  Other notables include sophomore forward Tori Davis who scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and junior guard Keith Aufmuth who chipped in with 11 points.

In Mount Union’s Last Game:  Mount Union -- 68, Colorado College--  64 on December 30, 2005 in Phoenix, Arizona at the Cactus Hoop Jam Tournament -- The Purple Raiders last played on December 30 at the Cactus Hoop Jam Tournament in Pheonix, Arizona when they beat Colorado College, 68-64.  The Raiders’  had a  comanding 42-24 led after one half.  Mt. Union was led by junior center Kyle Karpinski with a game-high 32 points, and a team-leading eight rebounds and four blocked shots.  Senior guard Brad Gerard scored 17 poinst and shot four-of-nine from three-point range.

Yellow Jacket Chatter

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters tonight’s game with Mount Union with 1,562 career points and 798 career rebounds and stands seventh on the all-time scoring list and fifth on the all-time rebounding list.  In two wins last week against Hood (Md.) College (a 88-58 win) and Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College (a 75-67 win), Thad Davis scored 35 points and grabbed 23 rebounds.

Three Yellow Jackets Named to All-Tournament Team -- Thad Davis, Keith Aufmuth, and Tori Davis were named to the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College All-Tournament team as B-W claimed the championship crown in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia.
        Thad Davis was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.  This is his fourth overall all-tournament selection and his first MVP selection.  Thad previously garnered All-Tournament Selections at the Dickinson (Pa.) College Tournament on November 22-23, 2003, the College of Wooster Tournament on December 29-30, and the Gettysburg (Pa.) College Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament on November 22-23, 2004.
        Tori Davis was named to one other all-tournament team coming at last year’s College of Wooster Tournament when he was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player.
        This is Aufmuth’s first all-tournament team selection.

Tom Harrington Surpasses 300 Career Assist Mark -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington had 17 assists in two games last week and now has 326 in his career.  He stands eighth on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark.

Keith Aufmuth Continues Hot Shooting from Beyond the Arc -- Aufmuth made 10-of-14 three-pointers in his last three games, inlcuding two-of-three against Capital University on December 18th, a perfect five-of-five against Hood (Md.) College on December 29th, and three-of-six against Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College on December 30th.  In his last three games, Aufmuth has increased his scoring average by nearly one full point from 9.0 ppg. to 9.8 ppg while scoring 10, 15, and 11 points, respectively.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 354 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  He is 354-292 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 635-406 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasions at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
