BEREA, OHIO -- Four Baldwin-Wallace College players scored in double figures and the Yellow Jackets overcame a 25-point first half deficit to defeat Mount Union College College, 85-82, in a key Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. With its victory, B-W improves to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in the OAC and remains in at least second place in the OAC (depending upon the outcome of the John Carroll game). With its loss, Mt. Union drops to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the OAC.
Freshman Matt Marks (Boardman) led B-W with 19 points and was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Cleveland/Brooklyn) with 18, junior forward Thad Davis(Elyria/Open Door) with 16 and freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) with 16. Sophomore center Kyle Karpinski led Mt. Union in scoring with 19 points and was joined in double digits by senior forward Rob Paulauskas with 15, junior guard Chris Blakely with 12 and junior guard Brad Gerard with 11. In the first half, Mt. Union led by as many as 25 points at 48-23 with 5:21 left before the intermission when freshman guard Jason Ferwada canned a jumper. Mt. Union led at halftime, 51-34. In the second half, B-W outscored the Purple Raiders 29-12 to tie the game at 63-63 with 7:02 left in the game. The game was again tied at 68-all before B-W outscored Mt. Union 18-14 to clinch the win. A pair of free throws by Aufmuth with 15.89 seconds gave B-W a four-point lead and the victory. With his 16 points tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,199 career points and is 16th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list. Next up on the scoring chart is Bob Scelza (1981-84) who scored 1,229 career points. The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its fourth straight game when it hosts the Mount Union College Raiders at Ursprung Gymnsasium in Berea. This will be a big game for the Yellow Jackets in regard to the OAC Standings.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 12-5 overall and 7-3 OAC record following their 76-60 win at Wilmington College in Wilmington on Saturday. It was B-W's third straight OAC victory.
Mount Union enters this game with an indentical 12-5 overall and 7-3 OAC record following its 85-82 overtime upset of 18th-ranked Otterbeinon College last Saturday in Westerville. The Purple Raiders have won three of their last four games and six of their last eight overall.
The Current OAC Standings -- John Carroll University leads the OAC with an 8-2 record. B-W, Mount Union and Otterbein are all tied for second place at 7-3 and Capital University and Ohio Northern University are both 6-4.
The All-Time Baldwin-Wallace Versus Mount Union All-Time Series-- This is the 107th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Mount Union College in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 65-42, and the Yellow Jackets won earlier this season in Alliance, 71-66, on December 17, 2003. Last year, Mt. Union won two of three games, including 67-58 in Alliance in last year's OAC Tournament.
The First Time They Met This Year: On Wednesday, December 17, 2003 in Alliance, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 71, Mount Union -- 66 -- The Yellow Jackets broke from a 66-66 tie and scored the game's final five points in the final 2:50. Junior forward Tori Davis' (Elyria/ Open Door Christian) foul shot with 49 seconds left game gave B-W the lead for good and freshman guard Matt Marks (Boardman) and sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) sealed the win. Mt. Union senior guard Brad Gerard led all scorers with 29 points, including seven three-pointers. Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) led four B-W double figure scorers with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis, 6'3" freshman Tori Davis and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks on the inside. At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth. Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 19.8 ppg. and leads the OAC in rebounding at 10.8 rpg. Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 14.2 ppg., rebounding with 8.2 rpg. and leads the OAC with 40 blocked shots. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 12.7 ppg and is first with 30 three-pointers. Harrington is scoring 9.1 ppg. and tops the team with 99 assists and has canned 29 treys. Marks is averaging 7.2 ppg. and 2.4 rpg.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'2" sophomore guard/ forward Dan Gundert (Wellington) and 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).
The Mount Union Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Lee Hood to start 5'11" junior guard Clay Sanders and 5'10" junior guard Brad Gerrad in the backcourt. Junior 6'5" wing pyer Chris Blakely will join 6'6" senior Rob Paulauskas and 6'8" senior Curtis Stevens on the inside. Gerard tops the team in scoring at 10.9 ppg. and has canned 46 three-pointers. Paulauskas is scond in scoring at 10.6 ppg. and he also grabs four rebounds per outing. Stevens averages 9.6 ppg., grabs 4.1 rpg. and cans 53.9 percent of his field goals (71 of 132). Blakely scores 8.4 ppg., tops the team in rebounding at 5.6 rpg. and has made 16 of 33 three-pointers. Sanders scores 3.5 ppg. and tops the team with 69 assists.
Off the bench, look for Hood to play 6'3" freshman wing Jarrod Ferwerda, 6'6" sophomore forward Kyle Karpinski, 6'2" junior wing Brett Hershberger, 6'5" freshman forward Jason Smith and 6'1" junior point guard Tony Basalla. Karpinski is tied for second on the team in scoring at 10.6 ppg. and is second on the team with 4.8 rpg. and shoots 57.4% from the floor (74 of 129).
In B-W's Last Game: Baldwin-Wallace -- 76, Wilmington -- 60 on Saturday, January 24 in Wilmington, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets defeated OAC rival Wilmington College, 76-60, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea on Wednesay. The win improved B-W to 11-5 overall and 6-3 inthe OAC. The win was the Yellow Jackets third straight. Junior gaurd Keith Aufmuth led B-W in scoring with 22 points. He was joined in double figures by junior forward Thad Davis who recorded his ninth double- double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman forward Tori Davis had 14 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double . Off the bench,freshman guard Nick Meyer had a career-high 13 points. Keys in the win were B-W outrebounding Wilmington, 42-30, having just nine turnovers and canning 23 of 29 foul shots (79.3 percent).
In Mount Union's Last Game: Mount Union --85, Otterbein -- 81 in Overtime on Saturday, January 24 in Westerville, Ohio -- The Purple Raiders beat their second nationally-ranked opponent this week when they defeated 18th-ranked Otterbein College, 85-81 in overtime, at the Rike Center in Westerville on Satyrday night. Earlier in the week, Mt. Union beat #12-ranked John Carroll in Alliance. Junior wing Chris Blakely canned seven of nine shots from the floor and scored a game-high 21 points to pace Mt. Union. Junior guard Brad Gerard had 16 points, including four treys, and both senior forward Curtis Stevens and backup sophomore forward Kyle Karpinski each had 12 markers. Keys in the game were Mount Union making 52.7 percent of its field goals (29 of 55), 57.1% of its three-pointers (eight of 14) and 82.6% of its foul shots (19 of 23).

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 339 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 620-401 in 38 years overall.
Thad Davis continues to Climb into BW History -- With his 16 points in Saturdays' defeat of Wilmington, junior forward Thad Davis moved his career points total to 1,183 which leaves him in 16th place all-time. In that game, Davis all recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Earlier in the week, Davis had 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds in a 90-77 win against Heidelberg.
Aufmuth and Meyer Set Career Marks -- Sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth and freshman guard Nick Meyer each set a career-high in points scored in the win over Wilmington last Saturday. Aufmuth put up 22 points, including five of eight shooting from "three-point land". Meyer chipped in 13 points off the bench.
Tori Doubles His Pleasure Too -- Freshman forward Tori Davis doubled his pleasure against Wilmington with 14 points and 11 rebounds. It was his fifth double-double effort of the season.
Davis Brothers Three Times -- Thad and Tori Davis have combined to earn OAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors three times this year. Tori has done it twice and Thad once.
The OAC Individual Leaders -- Thad Davis leads the OAC rebounding with 10.8 rpg. Tori Davis tops the OAC with 40 blocked shots and Thad is second with 36. Junior point guard Tom Harrington has the most assists with 99.
