Improve to 17-5 overall and 10-5 in the OAC
BEREA, OHIO Senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds tonight (Wednesday, February 9, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College mens basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College, 76-59, at the Timken Physical Eduacation Center in Alliance.
With its win, B-W is now 17-5 overall and 10-5 in the OAC. With its loss, Mount Union is now 10-12 overall and 6-9 in the OAC.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets raced out to a 15-4 lead on a jumper by junior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) at the 14:32 mark. The Jackets took their largest lead of the half at 19 points with 55 seconds remaining when sophomore wing Nick Meyer (Mentor) scored on a running jumper in the lane to push the score to 41-22, which was the score at halftime. Thad Davis scored 12 of his 24 points in the first half as Aufmuth chipped in with nine first half points.
In the second half, B-W built its largest lead of the game at 21 points as Aufmuth made a jumper right out of the locker room to make the score 43-22 with 18:43 ramaining. The Purple Raiders slowly cut the B-W lead down to seven, as junior post Kyle Karpinski nailed a jumper with 7:56 remaining in the game. However, the Jackets went on a 16-6 run over the next 6:37 to push the lead back to 17 points as senior guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Holy Name) canned two free throws with 1:19 remaining. The Yellow Jackets secured the win by making their last 12 free throws and were 17 of 21 on the game from the line en route to the 76-59 victory.
Joining Thad Davis in double figures for the Yellow Jackets was Aufmuth with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) also added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Mt. Union was led by junior center Kyle Karpinski, who was the only Purple Raider in double figures tonight, as he scored 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
B-W next plays on Saturday, February 12 when it hosts OAC-rival Muskingum College in an OAC game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to Alliance to play arch-rival Mount Union College. During the past four to five years, each game in this series has come down to the final minute or has been decided in overtime (see more about the series below).
B-W enters this game with a 16-5 overall and 9-5 OAC record following an 88-75 loss to Otterbein College in Westerville last Saturday night. The loss was the second straight for B-W.
Mt. Union enters this game with a deceiving 10-11 overall and 6-8 OAC record following its 84-79 loss in overtime at Ohio Northern University last Saturday in Ada. The loss ended a three-game Purple Raider winning streak.
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Mount Union Series-- This is the 111th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Mount Union College in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 67-43 after beating the Purple Raiders, 74-71, earlier this season on January 5, 2005 in Berea. A year ago, after B-W won both regular season meetings with the Purple Raiders, Mt. Union beat and eliminated B-W from the OAC Tournament with an 82-74 win in Berea on February 25, 2004.
The Ohio Athletic Conference Race -- The Yellow Jackets are currently tied with Ohio Northern for fourth place in the OAC Standings at 9-5. John Carroll University is in first place at 11-3, followed by both Capital University and Otterbein College at 10-4. Capital fell out of first place last Saturday when they were beaten by sixth place Muskingum College, 8-6 in the OAC.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 64 senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) and his brother, 64 sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) on the inside. At the point guard will be 511 senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Hts. Holy Name). At the wing positions will be 60 junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) and 62 sophomore Nick Meyer (Mentor). Meyer replaced 511 freshman Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) in the starting lineup last Saturday against Otterbein. Either Meyer, Schuler or 64 sophomore Matt Marks (Boardman) will start at that spot. Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.7 points per game, rebounding at 12.4 rebounds per game, and is second in blocked shots with 41 and is canning 60.9 percent of his field goals (167-of-274). Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.6 ppg., rebounding with 8.8 rpg. and leads the team in blocked shots with 43. He is also shooting a team-high 61.2 percent from the floor (137-of-224). Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 10.0 points per game, second in assists with 72, and first with 39 three-pointers. Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 9.0 ppg., first with 123 assists, and second with 29 three-pointers--
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play Sculer, Marks, 60 freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 64 sophomore post player Chad Clark (Fremont Ross), 62 junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), and 65 junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore). Marks is scoring 5.7 ppg., grabs 2.0 rpg. and has canned 14 three-pointers. Meyer is averaging 4.2 ppg. and has 15 treys. Sekerak is scoring 3.4 ppg. and has 19 steals. Clark is scoring 4.1 ppg. and cans 53.7 percent of his field goal attempts.
The Mount Union College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Lee Hood to start senior guards Clay Sanders, 60, and Brad Gerard, 510, in the backcourt. At the wing positions look for Coach Hood to start 61 senior Brett Hershberger and 65 senior Chris Blakely and down low at the center, look for him to start 66 junior Kyle Karpinski. Karpinski tops the team in scoring at 19.5 ppg.,is second in rebounding at 6.2 rpg. and he tops the team in blocks with 25. Hershberger is second on the team in scoring at 13.5 ppg. and third in rebounding at 3.6 rpg. He has also canned a team and OAC leading 57 three-pointers. Gerard is third in scoring at 10.2 ppg. and has hit 45 three-pointers. Blakely is averaging 9.4 ppg. and tops the team in rebounding pulling down 9.0 rpg., while also leading the team in steals with 26. Sanders scores 4.8 ppg. and is second in the OAC and tops the team in assists averaging 5.5 apg.
Off the bench look for Coach Hood to play 61 senior guard Tony Basalla, 62 sophomore guard Eric Fender and 67 sophomore center Jason Smith, 66 sophomore forward Josh Long and 63 freshman wing Adam Stinogle. Basalla is averaging 1.7 ppg. and has passed for 69 assists. He splits time with Sanders at the point. Fender has played in 12 games and is averaging 4.3 ppg. and has 13 treys. Smith is scoring 4.5 ppg. and grabbing 2.9 rpg. in 16 games. Long is scoring 6.8 ppg. and grabbing 3.4 rpg. in 13 contests. Stinogle scores 5.3 ppg. in 12 games.
In the First Meetings Between B-W and Mt. Union, on Jan. 5, 2005 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 74, Mt. Union -- 71 -- Brothers Thad Davis, a senior forward, and Tori Davis, a sophomore forward,each contributed a double-double as B-W defeated arch-rival Mt. Union, 74-71, at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. Thad Davis scored a team-high 28 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Tori Davis had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Thad Davis also blocked a game-tying shot attempt by Mt. Union junior forward Brett Hershberger as time expired to preserve the win. Mt. Union was led by junior center Kyle Karpsinski with a game-high 30 points and Hershberger also scored 19 points and canned five treys.

Despite the loss, senior forward Thad Davis scored a game-high 30 points and grabbed five rebounds and his younger brother, sophomore forward Tori Davis, added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
In Mount Unions Last Game, on Feb. 5 in Ada: Ohio Northern -- 84, Mount Union-- 79 -- In Mount Unions last game, the Purple Raiders fell at Ohio Northern College, 84-79 in overtime, on Saturday (Feb. 5) at the ONU Sports Center in Ada. Despite the loss, senior forward Chris Blakely scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. He was joined in double figures by junior center Kyle Karpinski with 16 points, senior wing Brett Hershberger with 13 and sophomore forward Josh Long with 12 markers. The loss ened a three-game Mount Union winning streak.

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters the game with Mount Union with 1,772 career points and 915 career rebounds and stands fifth on the all-time scoring list and fourth on the all-time rebounding list. Next up on the scoring list is the legendary Bob Walters (1959-63), who scored 1,840 points. All-time leading scorer Dean Martin (1969-73), who had 2,062 career points, is next on the rebounding list with 1,146.
Tom Harrington Has 367 Career Assists -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington has 373 career assists and stands fifth on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark. Harrington led the OAC in assists a year ago with 139 and currently leads this year in assists with 123. Harrington was also named a finalist for the 2005 Bob Cousy Award which is given to the most outstanding point guard in all the NCAA, Division I, II and III.
Steve Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 361 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. He is 361-295 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 642-409 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasons at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
Al Sirat Grotto Day is on Feb. 12 -- This Saturday, February 12, B-W and the Al Sirat Grotto, a local philanthropic group, will combine to host its 20th Annual Al Sirat Grotto Basketball Game against Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m. Partial gate proceeds will go to benefit children with cerebral palsy. The members of the Grotto also will honor a player of the game from each school.
