BEREA, OHIO — Senior and All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) tallied his 13th double-double of the season as he scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds today (Saturday, January 15, 2005) as the 22nd-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team beat Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 107-96, at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta. The victory was B-W’s seventh in its last eight games.
With its win, B-W is now 12-3 overall and 5-3 in the OAC. With its loss, Marietta fell to 2-13 overall and 0-8 in the OAC.
In a very fast paced first half, there were 11 lead changes and seven ties. The Yellow Jackets had 17 turnovers in the first half, as the Pioneers jumped out to a seven point lead at the 13:04 mark, when senior guard Chris Fulton scored on a layup to make the score, 18-11. The Yellow Jackets would bounce back outscoring the Pioneers 17-7, to close the half making the score 49-44.
In the second half, B-W never trailed and led by as many 30 at the 7:46 mark when freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa.) scored on a layup. Marietta made a late run, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 35-16 in the final seven minutes, but could not overcome the large Yellow Jacket lead en route to the 107-96 loss. Marietta got as close as 11 points at the end of the game with 1.6 seconds remaining, when freshman guard Seth Amburgey scored on a layup.
For the game, B-W shot extremely well from the floor as they went 42 of 64 for the game for 65.6 percent and even better in the second half as they only missed 11 shots going 24 of 35 for 68.6 percent. B-W outrebounded Marietta 67-46 for the game. Marietta set two OAC records today, the first for three-pointers attempted, in which they shot 63 attempts and a team record for steals in a game as they had 21. They also tied the OAC record for three-pointers in a game with 19, previously done by Wilmington, coincidentally set in a game last year against B-W. B-W set a new school record for turnovers in game, as they handed the ball over 37 times. The Yellow Jackets came close to a school record for assists in a game, but fell three shy of 1980-81 record of 29.
Thad Davis was joined in double figueres by his brother Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) who collected a double-double with 21 points 12 rebounds. Junior and All-OAC guard Kieth Aufmuth (Brookyln) had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park) set a career-high with 11 points.
With his 34 points and 15 rebounds today, Thad Davis now has 1,656 career points and 846 career rebounds. He is now fifth all-time in scoring as he surpassed Shelley Watters (1979-1982) who scored 1,627 career points and Ted Johnson (1965-1969) who scored 1,652 career points. He also surpassed Johnson in rebounding and now stands alone in fourth place as Johnson had 836 career rebounds.
Marietta was led by Fulton who scored a team-high 25 points including seven three-pointers. Sophomore swingman Craig Stewart had 17 points and three three-pointers. Amburgey scored 11 points and senior forward Matt Hines had ten markers.
B-W will be back in action on Wednesday, January 19 when it travels to Tiffin, Ohio to play the Heidelberg College Student Princes at the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a n 11-3 overall and 4-3 Ohio Athletic Conference record following a hard-fought, 70-68 loss to third-ranked and OAC-leader John Carroll University on January 12 in Berea. The loss snapped a season-high six game winning streak.
Marietta enters this game with a 2-12 overall and 0-7 OAC record following a 112-96 loss to Mount Union College at the Timken Physical Education Center in Alliance on Jan. 12. The Pioneers enter this game as one of the highest scoring teams in Division III.
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Marietta Series-- This is the 68th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Marietta College in men's basketball. Baldwin-Wallace leads the series, 42-25, and claimed victories in both of the regular season meetings last year. B-W beat Marietta, 90-83 in Berea on December 20, 2003 and also defeated the Pioneers, 80-66, on Feb. 7, 2004 in Marietta. The Yellow Jackets also have won five straight games against the Pioneers.

At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn). Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.1 points per game, rebounding at 12.6 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 31 and is canning 57.0 percent of his field goals (106-of-186). Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.9 ppg., rebounding with 8.4 rpg. and blocked shots with 28. He is also shooting a team-high 61.6 percent from the floor (93-of-151). Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 8.9 points per game, second in assists with 52, and first with 23 three-pointers. The Marietta College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Doug Foote to start 5’11” sophomore Chad Sponseller, 6’3” sophomore Craig Stewart and 6’0” senior Chris Fulton in the backcourt. At forward, look for coach Foote to start 6’4” senior Matt Hines and 6’5” senior Brett Atherton. Hines leads the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg., and in rebounding at 5.6 rpg. Sponseller is second on the team in scoring at 13.1 ppg. and leads the team in assists with 49 and has hit 34 three-pointers. Stewart is fourth on the team in scoring at 11.1 ppg. Look for coach Foote to play at least 11 players and as many as 14 in this game. The loss snapped a season-high six game winning streak. Dspite the loss, sophomore forward Tori Davis led the way for B-W with 19 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. He was supported in double figures by senior forward Thad Davis with 19 points and seven rebounds, senior guard Tom Harrington with 12 points and four three-pointers and junior guard Keith Aufmuth with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists. The key to the loss was B-W shooting just eight-of-21 at the foul line.
In Marietta’s Last Game: Mount Union-- 112, Marietta -- 96 on January 12, 2005 in Alliance, Oh. -- In Marietta’s last game, a 112-96 loss at Mount Union College in Alliance, the Pioneers dropped to 2-12 overall and 0-7 in the OAC. Despite the loss, sophomore guard Craig Stewart came off the bench to score 21 points. He was joined in double figures by senior forward Matt Hines with 16 points and sophomore guard Chad Sponseller and freshman guard Josh Hull each had 12 points. A key in the loss for the Pioneers was being outrebounded, 57-40, and Mt. Union outscoring Marietta at the foul line, 33-10.

Tori Davis is This Week’s OAC Player of the Week -- Sophomore forward Tori Davis is this week’s OAC Player of the WEek following his performances last week in wins against Mt. Union and Wilmington. In the two games, Tori Davis scored 50 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, passed fof four assists, blocked four shots and made two steals. He canned 16 of 23 shots from the floor and 18 of 28 free throws. The OAC Player of the Week Award was his third in two years.
Thad Davis and the OAC Player of the Week Award -- Senior forward Thad Davis was last week’s OAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. It was the third time this year that he has won the honor, including two straight weeks. Overall, Davis has won the award five times. Earlier this year, Thad was also honored on the D3hoops.com internet web site Team of the Week in Division III.
Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters tonight’s game with Marietta with 1,622 career points and 831 career rebounds and stands seventh on the all-time scoring list and fifth on the all-time rebounding list. Next up on the scoring list are Shelley Watters (1979-82) with 1,627 career points and stands sixth all-time. Fifth place is held by Ted Johnson (1965-69) with 1,652 points. Johnson is also fourth in rebounding with 836.
Tom Harrington Surpasses 300 Career Assist Mark -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington has 337 career assists and stands tied for seventh on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark. Harrington led the OAC in assists a year ago with 139 and currently leads this year in both assists with 87and assist-to-turnover ratio.
Keith Aufmuth Records First Double-Double -- Despite the loss versus John Carroll, junior All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth had his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.
Steve Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 356 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. He is 356-293 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 637-407 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasons at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
Two Tournament Titles -- The Yellow Jackets both both tournament that they competed in and are 7-0 in nonleague games. B-W won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament title and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was the Most Valuable Player. The Jackets won the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title last week and senior forward Thad Davis was the MVP.
