to Improve to 16-3 Overall and Win its 11th in the Last 12
BEREA, OHIO Senior foward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds today (Saturday, January 29, 2005) as the 15th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College mens basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 131-110, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win was B-Ws fifth straight and 11th in its last 12 games.
With its win, B-W is now 16-3 overall and 9-3 in the OAC and in second place. With its loss, Marietta is now 2-17 overall and 0-12 in the OAC.
In the first half, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 16-9 lead in the first 5:22 when sophomore center Matthew Rucker hit a short jumper. B-W then went on a 12-0 run to take a 21-16 lead when freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry) made a layup with 12:45 remaining in the first stanza. The Marietta went on a 12-5 run, capped by a Craig Stewart hit a three-pointer, to lead for the last time at 28-26 11:07 left. B-W then went on a 28-6 run, sparked by eight points from sophomore forward Matt Marks (Boardman) and five points from senior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name). B-W also led at halftime, 63-45. In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 30 points at 129-99 with 2:32 remaining when Sekerak scored on a layup.
Sekerak also scored a layup at the 2:57 mark which gave B-W 126 points and surpassed the previous B-W record for points scored in a game. The previous mark was 124 points set against Findlay in 1956-57. B-W also set a school-record for assists in a game with 38. The previous mark was 27.
Joining Thad Davis in double figures were five other players. They were sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) with 20 points and 14 rebounds, senior point guard Tom Harrington and sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor) each had 15 points, freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview) had 10 points and 11 assists and Sekerak had 11 points.
With his 28 points and 15 rebounds today,Thad Davis now has 1,723 career points and 927 career rebounds and ranks fifth all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding at B-W.
Marietta was led by sophomore guard Chad Sponseller with a game-high 36 points. As a team, Marietta canned 18-of-53 three-pointers and was one shy of the OAC record of 19 set by Marietta and Wilmington College, both of whom set the mark last year against the Yellow Jackets.
B-W next plays on Wednesday, February 2 when it hosts OAC-rival Heidelberg College in Berea at 7:30 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 15-3 overall and 8-3 Ohio Athletic Conference record following a 93-81 upset of fourth-ranked, OAC-leader and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Wednesday (January 26) in University Heights. The win was B-Ws third straight, broke an eight-game losing streak to the Blue Streaks and kept B-W in a three-way tie in second place in the OAC and one game back of JCU. B-W is tied with Capital University and Otterbein College.
Marietta enters this game with a 2-16 overall and 0-11 OAC record following a 107-88 loss to Mount Union College in Marietta on Wednesday (Jan. 26). The Pioneers have lost seven straight games, including 107-96 to B-W two weeks ago, are one of the highest scoring teams in Division III (98.6 points per game), but give up the most points in all of Division III (114.9 ppg.).
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Marietta Series-- This is the 69th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Marietta College in men's basketball. Baldwin-Wallace leads the all-time series, 43-25, including six straight wins. The first time the two schools met this season (Jan. 15, 2005) resulted in a 107-96 victory for Baldwin-Wallace. B-W also claimed victories in both of the regular season meetings last year. B-W beat Marietta, 90-83 in Berea on December 20, 2003 and also defeated the Pioneers, 80-66, on Feb. 7, 2004 in Marietta. The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 64 senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 64 sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) at the post positions. At the point guard will be 511 senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wings will be 60 junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) and 511 freshman Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park). Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 19.9 points per game, rebounding at 12.9 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 38 and is canning 59.5 percent of his field goals (135-of-227). Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.6 ppg., rebounding with 8.4 rpg. and blocked shots with 34. He is also shooting a team-high 62.0 percent from the floor (119-of-192). Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 10.1 points per game, second in assists with 58, and first with 33 three-pointers. The Marietta College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Doug Foote to start 511 sophomore Chad Sponseller, 62 freshman guard Craig Imhoff and 511 freshman guad Sam Rutherford in the backcourt. At forward, look for coach Foote to start 64 senior All-OAC player Matt Hines and 63 freshman guard/ forward Kyle Reed. Hines leads the team in scoring at 16.2 ppg., and in rebounding at 5.6 rpg. Sponseller is tied for second on the team in scoring at 13.3 ppg. and leads the team in assists with 63 and has canned 45 three-pointers. Reed scores 3.8 ppg. and grabs 2.8 rpg. and will start his seventh game. Rutherford is scoring 6.3 ppg. and has canned 18 treys and started for the first time against Mt. Union. In Mariettas Last Game: Mount Union-- 107, Marietta -- 88 on January 26, 2005 in Marietta, OH. -- Marietta College last played on Wednesday (Jan. 25), when the Pioneers lost to Mt. Union College, 107-88, at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta. Marietta was led by sophomore guard Craig Stewart with 17 points. Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters the game with Marietta with 1,695 career points and 887 career rebounds and stands fifth on the all-time scoring list and fourth on the all-time rebounding list. Next up on the scoring list is the legendary Bob Walters (1959-63), who scored 1,830 points. All-time leading scorer Dean Martin (1969-73), who had 2,062 career points, is next on the rebounding list with 1,146 and exactly 300 away.
Tom Harrington Was a Cousy Finalist -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was a finalist for the 2004 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award. Harrington has 351 career assists and stands sixth on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark. Harrington led the OAC in assists a year ago with 139 and currently leads this year with 100.
Thad Davis and the OAC Player of the Week Award -- Senior forward Thad Davis was last weeks OAC Player of the Week. It marked the fourth time this season and the sixth time in his career that he has won that award. Earlier this year, Thad was also honored on the D3hoops.com internet web site Team of the Week in Division III.
Steve Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 360 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. He is 360-293 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 641-407 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasons at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
Two Tournament Titles -- The Yellow Jackets both both tournaments that they competed in and were 7-0 in nonleague games. B-W won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament title and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was the Most Valuable Player. The Jackets won the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title last week and senior forward Thad Davis was the MVP.
This Saturday, B-W Will Acknowledge its Anniversary of its 1993-94 NCAA Division III National Tournament Sweet 16 Team -- This Saturday, B-W will recognize the members of its 1994-95 NCAA Division III National Tournament Sweet 16 team at halftime of its game against Marietta College.
