Yellow Jackets Defeat MacMurray, 79-60, to Win Consolation Game at the Wooster Tournament

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated MacMurray (Ill.) College, 79-60, to capture the consolation game of The College of Wooster Mose Hole Kiwanis Classic at the Timken Physical Education Center in Wooster.

With its win, B-W improves to 8-3 overall while MacMurray drops to 0-10 overall.

Thad Davis canned 12 of 15 shots from the floor and three of four foul shots for his 27 points. Thad Davis scored 47 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the two contests.

In addition for B-W, sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) was the only other Yellow Jacket in double digits with 14 points and seven assists. Freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) had six points and blocked a career-high seven shots. He had 13 blocked shots in the two games in the tourney.

MacMurray was led in scoring by senior center Derek Suttles with 11 points and freshman forward Tyler Meier had 10 markers.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 18 points on two separate occassions with the last one being at 39-21 with 3:06 left in the game when sophomore guard Dan Gundert scored on a layup. In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 24 points on two occassions with the last one being at the 1:44 mark when backup forward Adam DeChant hit the second of two foul shots.

In addition, Thad Davis was selected to the Mose Hole All-Tournament Team and Tori Davis was selected as the Defensive Player of the tournament.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Wednesday, Januar 7 when they travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Wooster, Ohio to participate in the consolation game of The College of Wooster Mose Hole Classic on Tuesday, December 30, 2003.  Games will be played at the Timken Physical Education Center.  Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it plays MacMurray (Ill.) College in the consolation game of The College of Wooster Mose Hole Tournament.

        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a  7-3 overall record following their 87-82 overtime loss to third-ranked Hanover (Ind.) College last night.  The loss broke a three-game winning streak.  B-W's only three losses this season have come at the hands of nationally-ranked teams.

        MacMurray enters this game with a  0-8 overall record following its 93-55 loss to 13th-ranked and host Wooster last night.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus MacMurray (Ill.) Series--  This is the first meeting between the two schools in men's basketball.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- See scoring averages and other information in the box to the right.   Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks (Board-man) on the inside.

At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 19.2 ppg. and leads the OAC in rebounding at 11.3 rpg. and has 22 blocked shots.  Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 13.9ppg., rebounding with 8.7 rpg. and leads the OAC with 25 blocked shots. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 12.8 ppg., is shooting 90 percent from the foul line (27 of 30) and is first on the team with 14 steals. Harrington is scoring 9.0 ppg. and tops the team and OAC with 62 assists.  He is also tied with Aufmuth for the most three-pointers with 17 each.  Marks is averaging 6.1 ppg. and 1.9 rpg.

        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time.  In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play.

The MacMurray (Ill.) College Probable Starters and Preview-- The starters are listed in the box below and to the right.  Against Wooster, Head Coach Bob Gay started 5'10' sophomore Kevin Downham and 5' 10" senior Drew Bell in the backcourt and 6'4" senior forward Derek Suttles, 6'3" freshman Tyler Meier and 6'5" freshman Zach Kowa on the inside.  Suttles tops the Highlanders in scoring at 23.9 ppg and in rebounding at 10.3 per game.  He has also canned nine three-pointers.  Drew Bell has played in four games this year and is second in scoring at 14.3 ppg. and has a team-leading 11 treys (3.75 per game).  Bell's backcourt mate Kevin Downham scores 4.9 ppg. and has eight treys.  Kowa scores 6.3 ppg. and greabs 4.1 rpg. and Meier tallies 8.0 ppg.

         Off the bench last night, Gay played 6'2" senior forward Isah Davis, 6'2 sophomore guard Stan Boyer, 6'3" freshman guard Nick Hipsher, 6'2" sophomore forward Ryan Eberhart, 5'11" sophomore point guard Matt Roose and 5'11" freshman guard Dumaka Turner.  Hipsher tops the team with 19 assists.

In B-W's Last Game:  Hanover (Ind.) --  87,  Baldwin-Wallace -- 82 in Overtime on Monday, December 29 in Wooster, Ohio/ in the First Round of the Mose Hole Kiwanis Classic -- The Yellow Jackets were defeated by third-ranked Hanover (Ind.) College, 87-82 in overtime, in the first round of The College of Wooster Mose Hole Kiwanis Classic at the Timken Physical Education Center at Wooster.  The loss ended a three-game B-W winning streak.  Despite the loss, junior forward Thad Davis and sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth led B-W in scoring with 20 points each.  The two were joined in double figures by junior point guard Tom Harrington with 16 points and 10 assists and freshman forward Tori Davis had 12 points and tied Thad for rebounding honors with 10 each. Tori also six blocked shots to tie a career-high.  For the game, B-W shot 48.4percent from the floor (31 of 64) and was eight of 13 from behind the arc for 61.5%.

In MacMurray's Last Game:  The College of Wooster-- 93-- MacMurray (Ill) --55 on Monday, December 29 in Wooster, Ohio in the Second Game of the First Round of the Wooster Mose Hole Kianis Classic--  The College of Wooster defeated MacMurray College, 93-55, yesterday in the nightcap of the first round of the Mose Hole Kiwanis Classic.  Despite the loss, MacMurray was lead by Derek Suttles with 20 points and six rebounds.  Drew Bell also chipped in with 14 points, including a pair of treys.  MacMurray connected on just 19 of 59 floor shots against the Scots for 34.5% and were outrebounded 57-26.

Yellow Jacket Chatter

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 334 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 615-399 in 38 years overall.

Davis' Doubles -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) has seven double figure scoring and double figure rebounding games this winter.  He began the season with five straight and leads B-W in scoring at 19.2 ppg. and tops the Ohio Athletic Conference in rebounding at 11.3 rpg.  Last night against Hanover, Thad had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

He's Really Not the Other Davis -- Freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) is the brother of junior Thad Davis.  Tori, making his own mark on the court, is averaging 13.9 ppg., 8.7 rpg., shoots a team-leading 55.8% from the floor and  tops the OAC with 25 blocked shots, including six last night against Hanover.  He had a career-high six blocked shots against Mount Union on December 17 in Alliance and three more in the win versus Marietta on December 20.

Harrington Has Second Straight Double-Double --  For the second straight game, junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) had his second consecutive career double-double with 16 points and 10 assists in the loss to Hanover.  Harrington recorded 12 points and a career-high 12 assists in a win versus Marietta on December 20.  Harrington also leads the OAC In assists with 62 (6.2 per game).

Aufmuth is Also Tops in the OAC -- Thad Davis leads all OAC rebounders (11.3 rpg.), Tori Davis has the most blocked shots (25), Tom Harrington has the most assists AND..... sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) is the best free throw shooter at 90 percent (27 of 30).

Losses to Nationally-Ranked Team -- B-W's three losses are all to nationally-ranked teams.  B-W lost to Randolph-Macon (Va.) College, 59-50, in its season-opener when RMC was ranked ninth.  B-W lost at home to Otterbein College, 66-63, on December 6 when Otterbein was 16th.  Hanover was ranked third.

Football All-Americans --  Five Yellow Jacket football players, seniors Nate Mitchell (Butler, Pa./ Butler), Greg Koch (Olmsted Falls), Mark Anders (North Olmsted) and Ian Formaz (Wadsworth) and junior Nate Wilder (Youngstown Cardinal Mooney), all have been selected to the various Division III All-American teams.

        In addition, Mitchell is this year's OAC Paul Hoernemann Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Defensive Lineman, Koch is the Lee Tressel Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Defensive Back and Anders is the Mike Gregory Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Offensive Back.  Also, Defensive Coordinator Adam Howard was named as the OAC Assistant Coach of the Year.

Harbour Repeats as Academic All-American -- Senior offensive guard Joe Harbour (Upper Sandusly) repeated as an Academic All-American and made the first-team this year after earning second-team accolades a year ago.

Palmer Earns All-American Honors  --  Senior volleyball middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/ South Central) earned AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-American honors.  Palmer is the first B-W volleyball All-American since 1984.

The Wrestling Team is 3-0 and Ranked 29th Nationally -- The Yellow Jacket wrestling team is 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC and ranked 29th in the latest National Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association Adidas-Brute poll.  B-W next competes on January 9-10 at the Division III National Dual Match Championships at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.  To date, sophomore 125-pound All-American Jared Selover (Wapakoneta) is ranked fourth nationally at his weight class.

Swimmers Head to Florida --  The men's (4-3 overall and 2-0 in the OAC) and women's (5-3 overall and 2-0 in the OAC) swim teams head south to Florida to train from January 1 through January 10.  B-W will compete in a dual meet down south.
