Third-ranked JCU Beats 22nd-ranked B-W, 70-68, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO —  Senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) and sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) each scored a game-high 19 points tonight (Wednesday, January 12, 2005) as third-ranked John Carroll University improved to 13-0 overall and beat Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival and 22nd-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College, 70-68, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. 

With its win, JCU remains in first place in the OAC at 7-0 and has now beaten the Yellow Jackets eight straight times.  With its loss, B-W fell to 11-3 overall and 4-3 in the OAC and ended a season-high six-game winning streak.

In the first half, JCU led by as many as eight points at 30-22 with 6:14 left in the half when Pete Moran connected on a pair of foul shots.  The Yellow Jackets then went on a 10-0 run to take a 32-30 advantage with 48 seconds remaining when Thad Davis scored on a short jumper.  Two foul shots by JCU's Brandon Mimes tied it at the intermission at 32-all.

In the second half, B-W led by as many as 10 points at 49-39 when Thad Davis connected on a foul shot to finish a three-point play with 14:33 remaining in the game.  JCU evened the score for the first time since early in the second half at 64-64 when Demetrius Travis knocked down a pair of free throws and Justin Ragor connected on a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 run to give the Blue Streaks a 67-64 lead with 3:37 to play.  Thad Davis gave the Yellow Jackets its final lead of the contest at 68-67 when he made two free-throws with 2:33 remaining.  A short jumper from Mimes with 2:15 to go gave John Carroll the lead for good at 69-68 as neither team made a field goal in the closing minutes.  B-W's final chance came with just 2.49 seconds remaining to play when Tori Davis missed a pair of free-throws.

JCU was led by Mimes with 11 points and seven rebounds.  Ragor, Peter Koch and Michael Grogan each added 10 points for the Blue Streaks.

For B-W, Tom Harrington (North Royalton/Holy Name) scored 12 points on four three-pointers and Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) added 10 to join the Davis brothers in double figures.  Tori Davis grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and Aufmuth chipped in with a game-high 10

With his 19 points and seven rebounds today, Thad Davis now has 1,622 career points and 831 career rebounds.  He is now seventh on the Yellow Jacket all-time scoring list and fifth in rebounding.

B-W will be back in action on Saturday, January 15 when it travels to Marietta, Ohio to play the Marietta College Pioneers at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its seventh straight game when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in a key OAC game at the Ursprung Gymnasium.  The Blue Streaks are all alone in first place in the OAC at 6-0 and B-W is currently tied for second at 4-2 in the league.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 11-2 overall record following a 97-90 double overtime victory against Wilmington College on Saturday, January 8 in Wilmington. The win was a season-high sixth straight for B-W and its fourth straight in OAC action.
        John Carroll enters this game with a perfect 12-0 overall record following its 116-96 victory against Marietta College on January 8 in University Heights.  JCU has not lost since an appearance in last year’s NCAA Division III National Tournament Final Four.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus John Carroll Series--  This is the 90th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and John Carroll University in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 49-42. JCU claimed victories in both of the regular season meetings last year and the Blue Streaks have won seven straight overall aganst he Yellow Jackets.  JCU defeated B-W, 97-91, in Berea on January 14, 2004 and beat the Yellow Jackets, 66-63, in University Heights on February 18, 2004.  The last B-W win against JCU came on Februart 14, 2001 in Berea, 72-71.

The National Polls --  In last week’s (Jan. 4), D3hoops.com internet web site Division III national poll, Baldwin-Wallace College was ranked 25th. That was prior to last week’s victories against Mount Union College (74-71) and Wilmington.  JCU was ranked third by D3hoops.com and will probably moved to No.2 as the top-ranked team, the University of Wisconsin at Steven’s Point, lost.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/
Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6’2” sophomore swingman Nick Meyer (Mentor) at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.2 points per game, rebounding at 13.0 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 28 and is canning 57,6 percent of his field goals (98-of-170).  Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.8 ppg., rebounding with 8.2 rpg. and blocked shots with 25.  He is also shooting a team-high 62.7 percent from the floor (84-of-134).  Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 8.8 points per game, second in assists with 42, and first with 23 three-pointers.  Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 7.6 ppg., first with 84 assists, and second with 18 three-pointers and has committed just 28 turnovers in 450 minutes of action.  Nick Meyer is sixth in scoring at 4.4 ppg.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'4" sophomore wing Matt Marks (Boardman), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5’11” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview).  Marks is averaging 7.2 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 2.7 ppg. and is first with 14 steals.

The John Carroll University Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Mike Moran to start senior guards Peter Koch, 5’11”, and Mike Grogan, 6’2”, in the backcourt along with 6’0” sophomore guard Chris Day.  At forward, look for  6’6” junior Kyle Roggenburk and 6’7” senior Andrew Salata to gett he nod.  If Koch, who missed the last two games with an injury, does not start, look for sophomore 6’3” forward Joe Kimener to get his third straight starting assignment.  Grogan leads the team in scoring at 16.3 ppg, grabs 3.2 rpg. and is second in steals with 24.  He has also canned a team leading 26 three-pointers.   Koch is third on the team in scoring at 11.2 ppg and second in assists with 23 and three-pointers with 12.  Salata is fourth in scoring at 9.5 ppg and second in rebounding at 8.0 rpg.  He also leads the team in blocked shots with 21.  Day scores 4.8 ppg. and grabs 2.7 rpg. and  Roggenburk averages 3.6 ppg. and grabs 3.9 rpg.
        Off the bench look for Coach Moran to play 5’11” sophomore guard Pete Moran, 6’0” freshman guard John Curran,  6’4” sophomore forward Brandon Mimes, 6’0” senior guard Demetrius Travis, and 6’3” junior guard Justin Ragor. Mimes is second in scoring at 16.2 ppg., tops the team with 8.9 rpg. and is second in blocked shots with 17. Mimes also shoots 59.6 percent from the floor (65-of-109).  Travis is scoring 7.2 ppg., grabs 4.4 rpg. and leads the team in steals with 27. Travis also shoots 65.1 percent from the floor (41-of-63).  Moran, the coach’s son, is scoring 8.3 ppg., grabs 2.2 rpg. and leads the team with 36 assists.  Curran is scoring 5.1 ppg. and has canned seven treys, and Ragor averages 6.3 ppg. and has nine triples.

In B-W's Last Game, on January 8, 2005 at Wilmington:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 97, Wilmington 90, -- The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-2 overall and 4-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference by defeating the Quakers from Wilmington College, 97-90 in double overtime, in Wilmington, Ohio.  B-W outscored Wilmington 17-10 in the final overtime period to claim the victory.  The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore forward Tori Davis with a game-high 29 points, including eight in the second extra session. Tori Davis also had eight rebounds.  Joining him in double figures were senior guard Tom Harrington with a season-high 18 points, sophomore forward Matt Marks with a season-high 17 points and senior forward Thad Davis with 13 points.  Thad Davis added a game-high 12 board and Harrington chipped in with a game-high seven assists.  B-W outrebounded Wilmington, 46-37.

In John Carroll’s Last Game:  John Carroll -- 116, Marietta --  96 on January 8, 2005 in University Heights, Ohio -- In JCU’s last game, on Saturday, January 8, the Blue Streaks improved to a perfect 12-0 overall and 6-0 in the OAC by defeating host Marietta College, 116-96, in University Heights.  JCU led, 49-40, at halftime and scored 67 second half points to coast to the victory.  Sophomore forward Brandon Mimes came off the bench to lead the Blue Streaks with 20 points and eight rebounds. He was joined in double figures by senior guard Michael Grogan with 18 points and three steals, junior backup guard Justin Ragor with 17 points, three steals and three three-pointers, Junior forward Kyle Roggenburk with 14 points and sophomore guard Chris Day with 11 points. JCU forced 35 turnovers and shot 54.8 percent from the floor (46-of-84) for the game.

Six-Game Win Streak Ties Season-High -- B-W’s current six-game winning streak is a season-high.  The Yellow Jackets won their first five games of the year.

Two Tournament Titles --  The Yellow Jackets both both tournament that they competed in and are 7-0 in nonleague games.  B-W won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament title and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was the Most Valuable Player.  The Jackets won the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title last week and senior forward Thad Davis was the MVP.

Thad Davis and the OAC Player of the Week Award -- Senior forward Thad Davis was last week’s OAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.  It was the third time this year that he has won the honor, including two straight weeks.  Overall, Davis has won the award five times.  Earlier this year, Thad was also honored on the D3hoops.com internet web site Team of the Week in Division III.

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters tonight’s game with JCU with 1,603 career points and 822 career rebounds and stands seventh on the all-time scoring list and fifth on the all-time rebounding list.  Next up on the scoring list are Shelley Watters (1979-82) with 1,627 career points and stands sixth all-time. Fifth place is held by Ted Johnson (1965-69) with 1,652 points. Johnson is also fourth in rebounding with 836.

Tom Harrington Surpasses 300 Career Assist Mark -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington had seven assists against Wilmington College this week and now has 334 in his career.  He stands eighth on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark.  Harrington led the OAC in assists a year ago with 139 and currently leads this year in both assists with 84 and assist-to-turnover ratio.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 356 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  He is 356-292 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of  637-406 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasions at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.

B-W to Acknowledge Anniversary of “Sweet 16” Team on Jan. 29 -- On Saturday, January 29, Baldwin-Wallace College will recognize the members of its 1994-95 NCAA Division III National Tournament “Sweet 16” team at halftime of its game against Marietta College.  Game time is 3:00 p.m.

Al Sirat Grotto Day is on Feb. 12 --  On Saturday, February 12, B-W and the Al Sirat Grotto, a local philanthropic group, will combine to host its 20th Annual Al Sirat Grotto Basketball Game against Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m.  Partial gate proceeds will go to benefit children with cerebral palsy.  The members of the Grotto also will honor a player of the game from each school.
