12th-Ranked John Carroll Beats Rival B-W, 97-91, in Berea; The Yellow Jackets

Fall to 9-5 Overall and 4-3 in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- Jerry Angel scored a game-high 25 points tonight as 12th-ranked John Carroll University beat Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 97-91, in an OAC game in Berea.

With JCU clinging to an 88-86 lead, Angel scored on a layup, David Gibbons had a tip in and a foul shot and the Blue Streaks went on to the victory.

With its win, JCU improves to 11-2 overall and remains in first place in the OAC at 6-1. With its loss, B-W fell to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks have now beaten B-W six straight times.

Joining Angel in double figure scoring for JCU were Gibbons with 20 points, Brandon Mimes with 13 and Pete Moran with 10. B-W was led by freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) with a career-high 24 points. He was joined in double figures by freshman guard Matt Marks (Boardman) with 18 points, junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) with 17, freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor) with 12 and sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) with 10.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 11 points at 33-22 with 8:03 left before the intermission when Meyer canned a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets also led at halftime, 44-38. In the second half, JCU outscored B-W 18-11 to take its first lead at 56-55 with 15:08 left in the game when Matt Moran canned a trey.

Keys to the Yellow Jackets' loss were 18 turnovers and being outrebounded, 42-20.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Muskingum to play OAC foe Muskingum College in New Concord at 3:00 p.m.

men's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, January 14, 2003 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. 

 

RADIO --  All away B-W men's basketball games are broadcast on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM.  This game will not be broadcast live.  WBWC will do live reports from this game that will be run live during the B-W versus JCU women's game that is taking place in University Heights at the same time.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its second straight game when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in a key OAC matchup.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 9-4 overall and 4-2 OAC record following their 67-63 win at Capital University last Saturday in Bexley.  B-W is just one game back of first place JCU.
        John Carroll enters this game with a 10-2 overall and 5-1 OAC record following its 73-70 win against Ohio Northern University in University Heights on January 10.  JCU is 6-0 at home but just 2-2 "on the road".

The All-Time Baldwin-Wallace Versus John Carroll All-Time Series--  This is the 90th all-time meetings between Baldwin-Wallace College and John Carrolll University in men's basketball.  The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series between the two schools, 49-40 , but JCU has won five straight games.  John Carroll won the last meeting, 98-80, on February 19, 2003 in Berea  The last B-W win came on  February 14, 2001 in Berea by the score of 72-71.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks (Board-man) on the inside.

At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  After 13 games, Thad Davis tops the team in scoring at 20.4 points per game and leads the OAC in rebounding at 10.4 rpg. He is second in blocked shots with 30.  He is also shooting 52.6 percent from the floor (101 of 192) and has passed for 16 assists. Tori Davis is second in scoring at 12.7 ppg. and second with 8.0 rpg. He first in the OAC in blocked shots with 34. He is also shooting 55.4 percent from the floor (62 of 112) to rank second in the OAC. Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 12.6 ppg. and first with 21 three-pointers, second with 47 assists and first with 21 steals. He shoots 84.8% from the foul line. Tom Harrington  is scoring 8.9 ppg. and is first in the OAC with 76 assists. He is also second on the team with 20 treys.  Matt Marks is fifth in scoring at 6.9 ppg.
        Off the bench, sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) scores 4.0 ppg., junior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian) scores 3.9 ppg., freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor) scores 3.3 ppg. and sophomore guard Dan Gundert (Wellington) averaes 2.3 ppg.

The John Carroll University Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Mike Moran to play as many as 13 players in a close game.  His probable starters in the backcourt are 6'2" junior guard Michael Grogan, 6'5" senior guard Jerry Angel, 5'11" and 5'11" transfer guard Pete Moran.  Up front, look for Moran to play 6'5" senior forward Jon Franks and 6'4" freshman Brandon Mimes.  Mimes has started the past two games for Ryan Dolatowski.  David Gibbons comes off the bench and tops the Blue Streaks in scoring with 14.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.  Angel is second on the team in scoring at 12.3 ppg. and has a team-leading 27 three-pointers.  Grogan is third in scoring at 11.7 ppg. and has 25 three-pointers.  Peter Koch comes off the bench to score 6.1 ppg. and lead the team with 25 assists.
         Off the bench, look for Coach Moran to play the 6'4" senior Gibbons, 5-11 junior guard Peter Koch.  6'7" junior center Drew Salata, 6'3" sophomore guard Justin Ragor, 6'0" junior guard Demetrius Travis and 6'5" senior center Daniel Budzar.  Senior 6'7" center Ryan Dolatowski started the first 10 games but has not played in the last two.  He averages 7.0 ppg. and 3.8 rpg. and shoots 56% from the floor.

In B-W's Last Game:  Capital --  63,  Baldwin-Wallace --  67  on Saturday, January 10 in Bexley, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets  defeated OAC rival Capital University,  67-63, at the Capital Center in Bexley.  The win improves B-W to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the OAC.   In victory, freshman guard Matt Marks led the Yellow Jackets with a career-high 21 points and cannedd eight of 12 shots from the field.  Marks also led B-W with seven rebounds.  He was joined in double figures by junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis who had 15  points and six rebounds and junior point guard Tom Harrington with  12 points.  Keys in the game for B-W were canning 50 percent of its field goals (23 of 46) and 73.9% of its foul shots (17 of 23).

In John Carroll's Last Game:  John Carroll-- 73,  Ohio Northern --70  on Saturday, January 10 in University Heights, Ohio --  Mike Moran played 13 players as the Blue Streaks defeated the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears, 73-70, at the Tony DeCarlo Center last Saturday in University Heights in a battle for first place in the OAC.  The win was also JCU's fourth in its last five games.  JCU was led in scoring by junior point guard Michael Grogan with 12 points. Senior guard Jerry Angel also had 11 points. Freshman forward/ center Brandon Mimes topped the Blue Streaks with 11 rebounds.  A 44-32 edge in rebounding was a key to JCU's win.

Yellow Jacket Chatter

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 336 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of  620-399 in 38 years overall.

Thad Davis' Doubles -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) has had eight double figure scoring and double figure rebounding games this winter. He began the season with five straight and leads B-W in scoring at 20.4 ppg. and tops the Ohio Athletic Conference in rebounding (10.4 rpg.) and is second in blocked shots with 30.

Tori is Really Not the Other Davis -- Freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) is the younger brother of junior Thad Davis. Tori, making his own mark on the court, is averaging 12.7ppg., 8.0 rpg., shoots 55.4% from the floor and is first in the OAC with 34 blocked shots.  Tori has also had three double figure scoring and double figure rebounding games.
