BEREA, OHIO Junior and All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) scored a game-high 20 points tonight (Wednesday, January 26, 2005) as the 15th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College mens basketball team upset, 4th-ranked Ohio Athletic Conference and cross-town rival John Carroll Universty, 93-81, at the Tony DeCarlo Center in University Heights. The win was B-Ws fourth straight and 10th in its last 11 games. The win also snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Blue Streaks.
With its win, B-W is now 15-3 overall and 8-3 in the OAC and alone in second place in the OAC. B-W is just one game out of first place in the OAC. With its loss, John Carroll is now 15-2 overall and 9-2 in the OAC and remains in first place in the OAC.
In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 20-12 lead at the 11:55 mark, when sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor) connected on two free throws. John Carroll would answer back with a 7-2 run, capped by a jump shot by sophomore guard Chris Day with 9:37 remaining to make the score 22-19. The Yellow Jackets would take their largest lead of the half of 11, at 30-19 when Aufmuth nailed one of four three-pointers for the game with 6:27 remaining. Aufmuth would hit another three-pointer with eight seconds remaining, as the Yellow Jackets would take a 44-35 halftime lead.
In the second half, B-W never trailed and led by as many as 17 points at 54-37 with 16:06 remaining when senior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/Holy Name) scored two of his 17 points on a lay-up. The Yellow Jackets shot 15-of-16 from the free throw line down the stretch en route to a 93-81 victory. For the game B-W shot 28-of-51 from the floor for 54.9 percent including 23-of-30 (76.6 percent) from the charity stripe. John Carroll shot just 26-of-73 (35.6 percent) from the floor in the loss.
Joining Aufmuth and Harrington in double figures was Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) who had 19 points and 17 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season, sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elrya/ Open Door) had 13 markers and freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park) scored 12.
With his 19 points and 17 rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,695 career points and 887 career rebounds and ranks fifth all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding at B-W.
John Carroll was led by sophomore forward Brandon Mimes who had a team-high 19 points and team-high 15 rebounds. Joining him in double figures was senior guard Mike Grogan and senior guard Demetrius Travis who both had 11 points and sophomore guard Peter Moran and senior guard Peter Koch who both add 10. The Blue Streaks who had not lost a home game in three years, have now lost two straight at the Tony DeCarlo Center.
B-W next plays on Saturday, January 29 when it hosts Marietta College at 3:00 p.m. at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its fourth straight game when it travels to Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in a key OAC game at the Tony DeCarrlo Athletic Center. A win by B-W would put the Yellow Jackets just one game back of the Blue Streaks in the OAC Standings.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 14-3 overall and 7-3 OAC record following its 59-58 victory against Wilmington College last Saturday at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win was B-Ws third straight and ninth in its last 10 games. Coupled with a loss by Capital University, the Yellow Jackets are now tied for second place in the OAC Standings.
The Blue Streaks enter this game with a 15-1 overall and 9-1 OAC record following a 111-101 victory against Marietta College last Saturday at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta. The Blue Streaks have won two straight games since suffering their only loss of the season to Muskingum College on Jan. 15. JCU has won 32 of its last 33 games at home.
The OAC Standings -- John Carroll leads the OAC with a 9-1 record. B-W and Capital University are tied for second at 7-3. At the time that these game notes were written, Otterbein (6-3) still has to make up its Saturday game at Muskingum (5-4) on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 3:00 p.m.
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus John Carroll Series -- This is the 93rd all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and John Carroll University in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 49-43. JCU claimed victories in both of the regular season meetings last year as well as the first meeting earlier this season on January 12, 2005 by a score of 70-68 at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The Blue Streaks have won eight straight against the Yellow Jackets. The last B-W win against JCU came on Februart 14, 2001 in Berea, 72-71.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 64 senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/
Open Door Christian School), his brother, 64 sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 62 sophomore swingman Nick Meyer (Mentor) at the post positions. At the point guard will be 511 senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 60 junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn). Thad Davis tops the team and the OAC in scoring with 19.9 points per game, tops the OAC and all of Division III in rebounding with 12.6 rebounds per game, and tops the team and OAC with 38 blocked shots. He is canning 59.6 percent of his field goals (130-of-218) and is one of three players with a team-leading 16 steals. Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.9 ppg., rebounding with 8.8 rpg. and blocked shots with 34. He is also shooting a team-high 61.7 percent from the floor (116-of-188). Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 9.5 ppg., is second with 58 assists and first with 29 three-pointers. He is shooting 44.6 percent from three-point land (29-of-65). Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 8.1 ppg., leads the team and OAC in both assists with 100 and in assist-to-turnover ratio. He is also second with 24 three-pointers and is shooting 42.9 percent from three-point range. Brendan Schuler is scoring 2.8 ppg. in 16 games and is averaging 9.3 ppg. in the last three games as a starter.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'4" sophomore wings Matt Marks (Boardman) and Nick Meyer (Mentor), 60 freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 62 junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington) and 65 junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore). Marks is averaging 6.6 ppg. and has canned 13 three-pointers. Meyer is scoring 3.6 ppg. and has made 13 treys. Clark is scoring 4.0 ppg. and grabs 1.5 rpg. Sekerak is scoring 2.9 ppg. and had a career-high 10 points last Wednesday at Heidelberg and is tied for first with 16 steals. In 10 games, Hale is scoring 1.6 ppg. and grabs 2.2 rpg.
The John Carroll University Probable Starters -- Against Marietta, veteran Blue Streak Head Coach Mike Moran started 511 senior guard Pete Moran, 60 freshman John Curran and 63 junior Justin Ragor in the back-court. On the inside, he started 64 sophomore Brandon Mimes and 60 senior Demetrius Travis. Moran averages 8.0 ppg., 2.9 rpg., is first with 56 assists and fourth with 24 steals. Curran, has started twice, and is averaging 5.3 ppg. and is 22-of-23 (.957) at the foul line. Ragor is scoring 7.1 ppg. and has also started twice. He also has 13 treys. Mimes is scoring a team-leading 16.9 ppg., grabs and team-leading 8.7 rpg. and shoots 59.6 percent from the floor (93-of-156). He also has blocked 23 shots. Travis scores 6.6 ppg., grabs 4.5 rpg., shoots 59 percent from the floor (49-of-83) and tops the team with 36 steals.
Off the bench look for Moran to play 62 senior Mike Grogan, 67 senior center Drew Salata, 60 sophomore guard Chris Day, 63 sophomore forward Joe Kimener and 66 junior forward Kyle Roggenburk. Grogan scores 15.7 ppg. to rank second on the team and is first with 34 treys. Salata scores 9.9 ppg. and is second in rebounding with 7.4 rpg. He also tops the team with 25 blocked shots. Day scores 4.5 ppg. Kimener scores 1.2 ppg. Roggenburg scores 2.9 ppg. and grabs 3.6 rpg.

Despite the loss for B-W, brothers Thad and Tori Davis led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 19 points each. Tori Davis also had a game-high 12 rebounds. In addition, senior point guard Tom Harrington scored 12 points on four three-pointers and junior guard Keith Aufmuth had the only double-double of his career with 10 points and 10 assists. Sophomore forward Brandon Mimes led four Blue Streak scorers in double figures with 11 points.
In B-W's Last Game on January 22, 2005 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace 59, Wilmington -- 58 -- In B-Ws last game, a 59-58 victory against Wilmington College last Saturday at the Ursprung Gymnasium, Yellow Jacket senior forward Thad Davis tipped in a missed free throw with 2.46 seconds left in the game for the winning basket as B-W improved to 14-3 overall and 7-3 in the OAC. Sophomore forward Tori Davis led B-W with 13 points and eight rebounds. Thad Davis had his 15th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and senior point guard Tom Harrington had 12 points.
In John Carrolls Last Game on January 22 in Marietta, Ohio: John Carroll -- 111, Marietta -- 101 -- In JCUs last game, a 111-101 victory at Marietta College last Saturday, sophomore forward Brandon Mimes led the Blue Streaks in scoring with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds. He was joined in double figures by senior guard Mike Grogan with 22 points, junior guard Justin Ragor with 14 and freshman guard John Curran with 10 markers.

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters the game with John Carroll with 1,676 career points and 870 career rebounds and stands fifth on the all-time scoring list and fourth on the all-time rebounding list. Next up on the scoring list is the legendary Bob Walters (1959-63), who scored 1,830 points. All-time leading scorer Dean Martin (1969-73), who had 2,062 career points, is next on the rebounding list with 1,146 and exactly 300 away.
Tom Harrington Surpasses 300 Career Assist Mark -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington has 351 career assists and stands sixth on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark. Harrington led the OAC in assists a year ago with 139 and currently leads this year in both assists with 100.
Thad Davis and the OAC Player of the Week Award -- Senior forward Thad Davis was last weeks OAC Player of the Week. It marked the fourth time this season and the sixth time in his career that he has won that award. Earlier this year, Thad was also honored on the D3hoops.com internet web site Team of the Week in Division III.
Steve Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 359 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. He is 359-293 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 640-407 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasons at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
Two Tournament Titles -- The Yellow Jackets both both tournaments that they competed in and were 7-0 in nonleague games. B-W won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament title and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was the Most Valuable Player. The Jackets won the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title last week and senior forward Thad Davis was the MVP.
This Saturday B-W to Acknowledge Anniversary of Sweet 16 Team on Jan. 29 -- This Saturday, January 29, Baldwin-Wallace College will recognize the members of its 1994-95 NCAA Division III National Tournament Sweet 16 team at halftime of its game against Marietta College. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
Al Sirat Grotto Day is on Feb. 12 -- On Saturday, February 12, B-W and the Al Sirat Grotto, a local philanthropic group, will combine to host its 20th Annual Al Sirat Grotto Basketball Game against Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m. Partial gate proceeds will go to benefit children with cerebral palsy.
