The Baldwin-Wallace College Men Beat Hood (Md.), 88-58, to Advance to the Title

Game of the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tourney

BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore backup forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross) scored a career-high 17 points today (December 29, 2004) as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Hood College of Maryland, 88-58, in the first round of the "Weenie" Miller Hampden-Sydney College Holiday Tournament in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia.

With its victory, B-W improved to 8-2 overall and won its third straight game. With its loss, Hood fell to 5-4 overall with two of its losses coming to Ohio Athletic Conference schools B-W and John Carroll in its season-opener.

In the first half, B-W went on a 14-0 run to build an early 19-3 lead with 16:08 left in the first half and led by as many as 27 points on three separate occassions at 50-23 with 2:14 left before halftime when sophomore forward Chad Clark scored on a hook shot. Clark, who prior to today scored nine career points, led B-W with 13 in the first stanza. B-W also led the intermission by 23 points at 50-27.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to as many as 41 points at 80-39 with 7:28 left in the game when backup guard Dan Gundert (Wellington) connected on a pair of foul shots.

In addition to Clark for B-W, junior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) scored 15 points as he connected on five three-pointers, senior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) had 10 points and junior backup forward Charod Hale (Akron/ Kenmore) came off the bench to score 10 points and grab a game-high nine rebounds.

In the win, senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds. With his eight points and eight rebounds today, Thad Davis now has 1,535 career points and 783 career rebounds.

Hood was led by sophomore guard Santo Provenzano with 19 points. He came into the game as the leading scorer in Division III at 29.5 ppg. and scored 44 in his last outing (on Dec. 8 against Bethany, W.Va.).

Tomorrow, the B-W men will play host Hampden-Sydney, 6-3 overall, in the championship game at 4:00 p.m. That game can be heard locally on B-W campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, or via the College internet web site at www.bw.edu/athletics.

Following its game with Hampden-Sydney, B-W returns to Berea and will also return to Ohio Athletic Conference action when it hosts OAC arch-rival Mount Union College on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes vs. Hood (Md.)



The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Hampden-Sydney, Virginia on December 29-30, 2004 to participate in the Hampden-Sydney College Holiday Tournament along with the host school, Hood (Md.) College and Eastern (Pa.) University.  B-W will play Hood on Dec. 29 at 4:00 p.m.  The consolation and championship games will be played on Dec. 30 at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., respectively.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its third straight game when it plays Hood (Md.) College in the first round of the Hampden-Sydney College Weenie Miller Holiday Hoops Tournament in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 7-2 overall and 2-2 Ohio Athletic Conference record following a 72-55 victory against OAC rival Capital University on December 18 in Bexley, Ohio.  It was B-W’s second straight victory.  The Yellow Jackets are also looking for their second straight tournament title this winter as they won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) College Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament.
        Hood enters this game with a 5-3 overall record following its 87-78 loss to Bethany (W.Va.) College on December 7 in Frederick, Maryland.  The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Blazers.  The Blazers have also added a 6’8” transfer player during the break.  This will Hood’s first game since Dec. 7.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Hood (Md.) Series--  This is the first-ever meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Hood College in men’s basketball.

The National Polls --  Baldwin-Wallace College is listed among the “Others Receiving Votes” in this week’s Division III national poll by the D3hoops.com internet web site.  The Yellow Jackets were ranked 16th in the preseason poll, 13th in Week #2, 12th in Week #3 and dropped into the “Others” in Weeks #4 and #5.  B-W was also ranked in the preseason by The Sporting News and the DIIINews magazine poll.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6’4” sophomore swingman Matt Marks (Boardman) at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.7 points per game, rebounding at 13.6 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 20 and is canning 55.3 percent of his field goals (68-of-123).  Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.1 ppg., rebounding with 7.7 rpg. and blocked shots with 17.  He is also shooting a team-high 60.4 percent from the floor (58-of-96).  Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 9.1 points per game, second in assists with 27, and first with 14 three-pointers.  Tom Harrington is fifth in scoring at 6.6 ppg., first with 59 assists, and second with 10 three-pointers and has committed just 16 turnovers in 316 minutes of action.  Matt Marks is fourth in scoring at 7.1 ppg.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6’4” senior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5’11” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview).  Meyer is averaging 4.6 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 2.6 ppg. and is second with 11 steals. 

The Hood (Md.) College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Tom Dickman to start  6’3” sophomore forward  David Wilson and 6’5” sophomore forward Dennis Tressler at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5’8” sophomore Darnell Edmonds. At the wing positions will be 6’0”  sophomore Santo Provenzano and 6’2” sophomore  Brian Morris. Provenzano is one of the top scorers in NCAA Division III basketball and leads the Blazers in scoring with 29.4 ppg., is third in rebounding at 7.5 rpg. and is shooting 51.9 percent from the floor (81-of-156). Wilson is second on team in scoring at 14.5 ppg. and rebounding at 7.6 rpg. and is tied for the most three-pointers with nine.  Tressler scores 6.9 ppg. and grabs 4.5 rpg.  Morris scores 3.4 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg. and has 15 assists.  Edmonds scores 3.6 ppg. and tops the Blazers with 27 assists.
        The Blazer bench is utilized well and is deep.  Look for Coach Dickman to play 6’0” freshman Steve Mahaney, 6’8” freshman center Jesse Gutekunst, 6’5” freshman Jonathan Obecny,  5’9” senior guard  Mike Blackman and 6’5” sophomore forward Sean Robine.  Gutekunst is third in scoring at 8.4 ppg. and first with 8.4 rpg. and has canned 28-of-47 field goals for 59.6 percent.  Mahaney is scoring 2.7 ppg. in seven games. Robine is scres 8.6 ppg., grabs 6.3 rpg. and has canned nine treys in seven games, including six starts. Obecny scores 5.8 ppg.

In B-W's Last Game, on December 18, 2004 at Capital:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 72, Capital 55, -- The Yellow Jackets improved to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference as they beat OAC-rival Capital University , 72-55, on Saturday, December 18, in Bexely, Ohio.  Senior forward Thad Davis lead the Yellow Jackets with 20 points and 15 rebounds.  In addition, sophomore forward Tori Davis, sophomore guard Nick Meyer and junior guard Keith Aufmuth chipped in with 13, 11 and 10, respectively.

In Hood’s Last Game:  Bethany (W.Va.) College -- 87,  Hood (Md.)--  78 on December 7 in Frederick Md. -- The Blazers dropped to 5-3 overall as they were defeated by Bethany (W.Va.) College, 87-78, on Decemebr 7 in Frederick, Maryland.  Despite the loss, sophomore forward Santo Provenzano led the way with a  single-game  record 44 points. Provenzano was 12 of 13 from the field in the first half and was 17 of 20 from the field for the game.

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters tonight’s game with Hood with 1,527 career points and 775 career rebounds and stands eighth on the all-time scoring list and seventh on the all-time rebounding list.  In two wins last week against Ohio Northern University (a 74-54 win) and Capital University (a 72-55 win), Thad Davis scored 50 points and grabbed 34 rebounds.
        When Thad Davis moved from ninth to eighth on the all-time scoring list, he surpassed Harvey Hopson (1964-68) who had 1,509 career points.  Next up is Jason Schefft (1997-2001) who scored 1,559 career points.  Hopson’s 777 career rebounds are next for Davis to pass on that list and moved up to sixth.

Tom Harrington Surpasses 300 Career Assist Mark -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington had 13 assists in two games last week and now has 309 in his career.  He stands 10th on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 352 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  He is 352-292 in 26 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 633-406 in 40 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasions at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
