Straight Win and Eighth in its Last Nine Games
BEREA, OHIO - Sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds tonight (Wednesday, January 19, 2005) as the 22nd-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 92-66, at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The win was B-W's second straight and eighth in its last nine games.
With its win, B-W is now 13-3 overall and 6-3 in the OAC. With its loss, Heidelberg is now 5-12 overall and 1-8 in the OAC.
The first half opened with a technical foul against Heidelberg due to a pregame offense. The two free-throws spurred a 6-0 run Yellow Jacket run, fueled by five of freshman guard Brendan Schuler's (Fairview Park/ Fairview) 10 first-half points. A Schuler three-pointer at the 14:36 mark built the Yellow Jacket lead to as many as eight points 16-8. Later in the half, B-W went on an 8-0 run to take its largest lead at 15 points at 40-25 with 2:18 remaining. B-W also lead at halftime 42-28.
In the second half, B-W outscored the Student Princes 17-8 in the first five mintues to lead by 23 points at 59-36 with 15:12 left in the game. Junior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) spurred the run with 10 of his 15 total points. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 31 points at 91-60 with 1:37 left in the game when sophomore forward Chad Clark (Fremont/ Ross) hit a jumper with 1:30 remaining.
In addition to Tori Davis, Schuler and Aufmuth for B-W, senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds and sophomore guard Matt Marks (Boardman) scored 11 points. Aufmuth finished with 15 points while Schuler and freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry) each added 10.
With his 12 points and 14 rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,664 career points and 860 career rebounds and ranks fifth all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding at B-W.
Heidelberg was led by Brian Schmidt's 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ron Higgins also scored in double-figures with 10 points.
B-W next plays on Saturday, January 22 when it hosts Wilmington College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its second straight game when it travels to Tiffin to play the Heidelberg College Student Princes in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 12-3 overall and 5-3 OAC record following a 107-96 victory against Marietta College on January 15 in the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta. The win was B-W’s seventh in its last eight games.
Heidelberg enters this game with a 4-11 overall and 1-7 OAC record following its 93-71 loss on January 15 against Ohio Northern in Tiffin. The Student Princes enter this game having been defeated in each of their last five contests.
This game also pits the battle between the “Teacher and the Pupil? Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson coached Duane Sheldon as a player and then following a stint as an extremely successful head coach at local Middleburg Heights Midpark High School, Sheldon then joined Bankson’s staff at B-W before becoming Heidelberg’s coach three years ago. Heidelberg’s assistant coach is former Yellow Jacket standout and ?000-Point Club?member Jon Carroll.
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Heidelberg Series -- This is the 93rd all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Heidelberg College in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 56-36, including two straight victories and wins in both games played last year. Last season, the Yellow Jackets beat Heidelberg, 90-77, in Berea on January 21, 2004 and topped the Student Princes, 84-75, in Tiffin on February 4, 2004. The last Heidelberg win came on February 5, 2003 when the Student Princes beat the Yellow Jackets, 89-84, in Berea.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6??senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and his brother, 6??sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), at the post positions. At the point guard will be 5?1?senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name). At the wings will be 6??junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) and 6??sophomore Nick Meyer (Mentor). Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 21.0 points per game, rebounding at 12.7 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 34 and is canning 59.1 percent of his field goals (120-of-203). Tori Davis is second in scoring at 18.1 ppg., rebounding with 8.7 rpg. and blocked shots with 30. He is also shooting a team-high 62.2 percent from the floor (102-of-164). Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 9.1 points per game, second in assists with 57, and first with 25 three-pointers. Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 7.9 ppg., first with 93 assists and second with 22 three-pointers. Marks is averaging 6.7 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 2.6 ppg. and is third with 14 steals.
The Heidelberg College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach and B-W graduate Duane Sheldon to play an up-tempo style and start 6??senior Kenny Gilbert and 6??freshman Shawn Shriver in the backcourt. Look for 6??freshman Greg Tyson and 6??sophomore T.J. Johnson will start at the forward positions, and for 6??sophomore Ron Higgins will join them in the front court as the center. Gilbert is one of the most athletic players in the OAC. He leads The Berg in scoring with 14.1 ppg, in assists with 38 assists and in steals with 23 He also grabs 3.5 rpg. and has canned 25 treys. Shriver scores 10.8 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. and has canned a team-leading 32 three’s. Tyson scores 7.1 ppg. and has 32 assists. He shoots 52.7 percent from the floor (39-of-73 shots). Johnson also is very acctive as he scores 12.5 ppg., grabs 4.3 rpg., has 12 treys and 21 steals. Higgins leads the team in rebounds at 5.5 rpg and is third in scoring with 11.0 ppg.
Off the bench look for Coach Sheldon to play 6??junior guard Scott Morrison, 6??sophomore guard/forward Josh Dickey, 6??freshman guard Matt Eberle, 6??sophomore gaurd Mike Stull, 6??freshman post Brian Schmidt, and 6??frshman post Andrew Lemmon. Schmidt tops the “bench bunch?by averaging 9.3 ppg. and grabs 4.3 rpg.
In B-W's Last Game, on January 15, 2005 in Marietta: Baldwin-Wallace -- 107, Marietta 96, -- The Yellow Jackets last played on Saturday, January 15, when they defeated OAC arch-rival Marietta College, 107-96, at the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta. B-W overcame an early eight-point first half deficit to hold a 49-44 halftime advantage. The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a 20-8 run and led by as many as 30 points at 91-61 with 7:46 left in the game. Senior forward Thad Davis had game-highs of 34 points and 15 rebounds and sophomore forward and brother Tori Davis also recorded a double-double of his own with 21 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, junior guard Keith Aufmuth had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists and freshman guard Brendan Schuler had a career-high 11 points.
In Heidelberg’s Last Game: Ohio Northern -- 93, Heidelberg -- 71, -- The Student Princes last played on Saturday, January 15, when they were defeated by OAC-rival Ohio Northern University, 93-71, at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. Sophomore forward T.J. Johnson led Heidelberg with 13 points. Freshman forward Greg Tyson and freshman backup guard Matt Eberle also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. ONU had five players score double figures.

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters the game with Heidelberg with 1,656 career points and 846 career rebounds and stands fifth on the all-time scoring list and fourth on the all-time rebounding list. Next up on the scoring list is the legendary Bob Walters (1959-63), who scored 1,830 points. All-time leading scorer Dean Martin (1969-73), who had 2,062 career points, is next on the rebounding list with 1,146 and exactly 300 away.
Tom Harrington Surpasses 300 Career Assist Mark -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington has 343 career assists and stands seventh on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark. Harrington led the OAC in assists a year ago with 139 and currently leads this year in both assists with 93 and assist-to-turnover ratio.
Keith Aufmuth Records First Double-Double -- Despite the loss versus John Carroll, junior All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth had his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Last week, in two games, Aufmuth had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists.
Tori Davis Was Last Week’s OAC Player of the Week -- Sophomore forward Tori Davis was last week’s OAC Player of the Week following his performances in wins against Mt. Union and Wilmington. In the two games, Tori Davis scored 50 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, passed fof four assists, blocked four shots and made two steals. He canned 16 of 23 shots from the floor and 18 of 28 free throws. The OAC Player of the Week Award was his third in two years.
Thad Davis and the OAC Player of the Week Award -- Senior forward Thad Davis was the OAC Player of the Week the two previous weeks from Tori. Thad has won the award three times this year and five times overall. Earlier this year, Thad was also honored on the D3hoops.com internet web site Team of the Week in Division III.
Steve Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 356 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. He is 356-293 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 637-407 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasons at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
Two Tournament Titles -- The Yellow Jackets both both tournament that they competed in and are 7-0 in nonleague games. B-W won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament title and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was the Most Valuable Player. The Jackets won the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title last week and senior forward Thad Davis was the MVP.
B-W to Acknowledge Anniversary of “Sweet 16?Team on Jan. 29 -- On Saturday, January 29, Baldwin-Wallace College will recognize the members of its 1994-95 NCAA Division III National Tournament “Sweet 16?team at halftime of its game against Marietta College. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
Al Sirat Grotto Day is on Feb. 12 -- On Saturday, February 12, B-W and the Al Sirat Grotto, a local philanthropic group, will combine to host its 20th Annual Al Sirat Grotto Basketball Game against Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m. Partial gate proceeds will go to benefit children with cerebral palsy. The members of the Grotto also will honor a player of the game from each school.
