OAC and Rival Heidelberg, 90-77, in Berea
BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) scored 17 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team beat Ohio Athletic Conference and rival Heidelberg College, 90-77, tonight in an OAC game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win was B-W's second straight.
With its win, B-W improves to 11-5 overall and 6-3 at the end of the first half of the OAC regular season. With its loss, Heidelberg fell to 3-13 overall and 1-8 in the OAC. The Student Princes have lost 11 of their last 12 games.
In addition to Thad Davis for B-W, junior point guard Tom Harrington (Parma/Holy Name) had 18 points, freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) had 17, sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Cleveland/Brooklyn) 13 and freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor) and junior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) 10 each. Heidelberg was led by junior guard Kenny Gilbert's game-high 25 points and senior forward Lucas Messer had 24 points and 11 rebounds.
In the first half, Heidelberg led by as many as 10 points at 21-11 with 11:45 left before the intermission when Messer scored on a layup. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Student Princes 31-20 the remainder of the half to lead at halftime, 42-41. In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 13 points on three separate occassions with the last one being the final score.
With his 17 points tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,167 career points and is now 15th all-time on the Yellow Jacket scoring chart. Next on the list is two-time All-American and Academic All-American Bob Scelza (1981-84) who had 1,229 points.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, January 24, when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio to play OAC foe Wilmington College at 3:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m. This is the final game of the first half of the OAC Regular season.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to extend its winning ways to two straight games when it hosts OAC rival Heidelberg College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium. This is the final game of the first half of the OAC regular season.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 10-5 overall and 5-3 OAC record following their 69-64 overtime win against Muskingum College in New Concord last Saturday.
Heidelberg enters this game with a 3-12 overall and 1-7 OAC record following its 68-54 loss against Capital in Tiffin on January 17. The Student Princes have lost two straight games and 10 of their last 11 contests overall.
The All-Time Baldwin-Wallace Versus Heidelberg All-Time Series-- This is the 91st all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Heidelberg College in men's basketball. B-W lead the all-time series between the two schools, 54-36, and the two schools split games a year ago. The Student Princes won the last meeting, 89-84, on February 5, 2003 in Berea. The last B-W win came on January 22 in Tiffin by the final score of 67-57.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks (Board-man) on the inside. At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn). Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 20.3 ppg. and leads the OAC in both rebounding at 10.1 rpg. and second on the team with 31 blocked shots. Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 13.8 ppg., rebounding with 8.1 rpg. and leads the the OAC with 38 blocked shots. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 12.1 ppg and is 24 of 62 from three-point range for 38.7 percent. Harrington is scoring 8.8 ppg. and tops the team with 89 assists and has canned 24 treys. Marks is averaging 7.7 ppg. and 2.4 rpg.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time. In addition, 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play.
The Heidelberg College Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Duane Sheldon to start 5'11" junior Kenny Gilbert, who is second on the team in scoring at 16.6 ppg., has canned 29 three-pointers and leads the OAC in steals with 33, in the backcourt along with 6'1" sophomore Nolan Edwards along with wing player. 6'6" freshman T.J. Johnson. Edwards scores 8.0 ppg., is first on the team with 35 assists and has 17 three-pointers. Johnson scores 5.0 ppg. and grabs 5.8 rpg. Playing inside will be 6'7" senior Lucas Messer, who leads the OAC in scoring with 21.1 ppg. and is third in rebounding at 7.9 rpg, and 6'8" freshman Ron Higgins, who scores 8.6 ppg. and grabs 5.6 rpg. Messer and Higgins each have 14 blocked shots. Off the bench, look for Sheldon to play 6'0" junior guard Kyle Tackett, 6'0" junior guard Lorenzo Smith, 6'0" junior guard Matt Stull and 6'5" senior forward Andy Carter.
In B-W's Last Game: Baldwin-Wallace -- 69, Muskingum -- 64 on Saturday, January 17 in New Concord, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets defeated OAC rival Muskingum College, 69-64 in overtime, at the Muskingum HPER Center in New Concord last Saturday. The win improved B-W to 10-5 overall and 5-3 inthe OAC. In the win, junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis led B-W in scoring with 22 points and eight rebounds. He was joined in double figures by his brother, freshman forward Tori Davis with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and one blocked shot. Junior point guard Tom Harrington also chipped in with 10 points and had a game-high seven assists. Muskingum was led by Cole Pittis' with 18 points on seven of eight shooting from the floor.
In Heidelberg's Last Game: Capital-- 68, Heidelberg --54 on Saturday, January 17 in Tiffin, Ohio -- The Student Princes lost 68-54 to Capital University at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin in the nightcap of a women's and men's doubleheader. With its loss, Heidelberg fell to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in the OAC. The loss was also Heidelberg's 10th in its last 11 contests. Despite the defeat, junior guard Kenny Gilbert led the Student Princes with 22 points. Capital held Student Prince All-OAC forward Lucas Messer to six points and eight rebounds. Capital had five scorers in double figures, led by guard Adam Stolly with 14 points.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 337 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 337-287. In 38 years overall, Bankson has compiled an outstanding 618 wins and is 618-401.
Bankson and His Protege' -- B-W is coached by Bankson and Heidelberg is coached by former Yellow Jacket four-year standout Duane Sheldon '93. Sheldon is in his second season at Heidelberg after a solid high school career at local Middleburg Heights Midpark High School and then later under Bankson at B-W from 1999-2002. Sheldon is a Strongsville High product. A year ago, Heidelberg finished 7-19 overall. In his first appearance back in Berea as the coach of the Student Princes, Sheldon and Heidelberg prevailed, 89-84.
Thad Davis Moving Up the Career Scoring Charts -- Thad Davis has scored 1,151career points and ranks 17th on the all-time scoring list. With his 22 points at Muskingum, Davis surpassed Ken Hemmerich (1958-61), who had 1,141 points, and he is now one point shy of tying the legendary Dick Selgo (1947-50) for 16th place. After Selgo is No. 15 Academic All-American Bob Scelza (1981-84) with 1,229 markers.
Davis Brothers are Also the Double-Double Brothers -- Thad and Tori Davis are brothers. They also have combined for 11 double-figure scoring and double-figure rebounding games this year. Thad has done it seven times, including five straight to begin the season. Tori has done it four times, including last Saturday at Muskingum wgen he had 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Three B-W Players Lead the OAC Statistically -- Three Yellow Jackets lead the OAC statistically. Junior forward Thad Davis tops the OAC in rebounding with 10.1 caroms per game. His younger brother, freshman forward Tori Davis, is the OAC's top shot-blocker with 38. Junior point guard Tom Harrington has the most assists in the OAC with 89.
The OAC Race -- John Carroll University leads the OAC at 7-1. The Blue Streaks are followed by Otterbein at 6-2 and then there is a four-way tie for third place with B-W, Mount Union, Capital and Ohio Northern all 5-3.
