BEREA, OHIO -- Freshman forward Brian Schmidt scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005) as the Heidelberg College Student Princes upset the 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team 96-86 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
With its win, Heidelberg improved to 6-14 overall and 3-10 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W dropped to 16-4 overall and 9-4 in the OAC and into third place. The loss also ended B-W's five game winnning streak.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets raced out to a 13-11 lead with 13:11 left in the half on a jumper by senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door). Heidelberg responded to that run with a 28-11 run over the next eight minutes to mount a 39-24 lead. Following a junior forward Scott Morrison three-pointer and a Schmidt lay-up, the Student Princes had their largest lead of the half at 56-35 with 42 seconds remaining. B-W senior point guard Tom Harrington's (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) three-pointer at the buzzer cut the Heidleberg lead to 56-40 entering the locker room. Freshman forward Andrew Lemmon was a perfect four of four from behind the arc for 12 points in the first half.
In the second half, Heidelberg pushed the lead back our to 21 points after a three-pointer by freshman forward Greg Tyson with 12:28 remaining. B-W cut into the lead via two three-pointers by freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), the second of which making the score 87-78, with 4:38 left. The Jackets could only cut the lead down to eight points late, as the Student Princes continued to shoot the ball well, 57percent from the field and 58 percent behind the arc.
In addition to Schmidt in double figures for Heidelberg, freshman guard Shawn Shriver had 16 points, freshman forward Greg Tyson with 15 and sophomore center Ron Higgins had 10 points.
For the Yellow Jackets, Thad Davis and Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) each had 19 points, Harrington had 13 points and junior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) had 12 markers.
With his 19 points and eight rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,742 career points and 910 career rebounds to rank fifth all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding.
The Yellow Jackets next play on Saturday, Feb. 5 when they travel to Westerville to play Otterbein College at the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will to win its sixth straight game and keep pace with the top of the OAC standings as the host conferece rival Heidelberg College.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 16-3 overall and 9-3 OAC record following a 131-110 victory against Marietta College on January 29 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. B-W set three school records en route to its win. The win was B-W’s 11th in its last 12 games.
Heidelberg enters this game with a 5-14 overall and 2-10 OAC record following its 105-66 loss on January 29 against Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center in Ada. The Student Princes enter this game losers of two straight games and have lost eight of their last nine games.
This game also pits the battle between the “Teacher and the Pupil”. Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson coached Duane Sheldon as a player and then following a stint as an extremely successful head coach at local Middleburg Heights Midpark High School, Sheldon then joined Bankson’s staff at B-W before becoming Heidelberg’s coach three years ago. Heidelberg’s assistant coach is former Yellow Jacket standout and “1000-Point Club” member Jon Carroll.
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Heidelberg Series-- This is the 93rd all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Heidelberg College in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 57-36,including a 92-66 victory over the Student Princes on January 19 in Berea . Last season, the Yellow Jackets beat Heidelberg, 90-77, in Berea on January 21, 2004 and topped the Student Princes, 84-75, in Tiffin on February 4, 2004. The last Heidelberg win came on February 5, 2003 when the Student Princes beat the Yellow Jackets, 89-84, in Berea.

Baldwin-Wallace and Capital are tied for second at 9-3 and one game ahead of fourth place Otterbein College at 8-4. Today’s oppenent Heidelberg is in ninth place at 2-10. The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), at the post positions. At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name). At the wings will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) and 5’11” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview). Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.3 points per game, rebounding at 13.0 rebounds per game, and blocked shots with 39 and is canning 60.7 percent of his field goals (148-of-244). Tori Davis is second in scoring at 17.7 ppg., rebounding with 8.7 rpg. and and second in blocked shots with 37. He is also shooting a team-high 63.0 percent from the floor (126-of-200). Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 10.0 points per game, second in assists with 67, and first with 35 three-pointers. Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 8.9 ppg., first with 109 assists and second with 27 three-pointers. Schuleris averaging 3.7 ppg. and has 34 assists.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'4" sophomore wing Matt Marks (Boardman), 6’2” sophomore Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), and 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore). Marks is averaging 6.3 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 3.2 ppg. and is third with 17 steals. Meyer is sixth in scoring at 4.3 ppg. and has canned 14 treys and is shooting 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from “three-point land”.
The Heidelberg College Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach and B-W graduate Duane Sheldon to play an up-tempo style and start 6’2” freshman Matt Eberle and 6’0” freshman Shawn Shriver in the backcourt. Look for 6’5” freshman Greg Tyson, 6’4” sophomore Josh Dickey and 6’5” freshman Brian Schmidt to start at the forward positions. Shriver scores 10.2 ppg., grabs 2.6 rpg. and has canned a team-leading 38 three’s. Schmidt scores 9.2 ppg, and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.2 boards per game. Tyson scores 6.9 ppg. and has 34 assists. He shoots 47.5 percent from the floor (47-of-99 shots). Dickey scores 3.9 ppg and grabs 2.0 rpg. Eberle scores 2.6 ppg.

Johnson, 6’4” sophomore guard Mike Stull and 6’4” freshman post Andrew Lemmon. Johnson is second on the team scoring at 11.2 ppg, pulls down 4.1 rpg, has 15 treys and 24 steals. Higgins leads the team in rebounds at 5.4 rpg and is third in scoring with 10.8 ppg.
In the last Meeting Between Baldwin-Wallace and Heidelberg on January 19, 2005 in Tiffin: B-W -- 92, Heidelberg -- 66 -- In the first meeting between the Yellow Jackets and the Student Princes, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Student Princes 92-66 in Tiffin. B-W was led by sophomore forward Tori Davis with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Yellow had six players in double-figures. Junior guard Keith Aufmuth had 15 points, senior forward Thad Davis scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, sophomore backup forward Matt Marks had 11 markers and freshmen guards Brendan Schuler and Tyler Sekerek each had 10 points. Leading the Student Princes’ was freshman forward Brian Schmidt who had a team-high 12 points and senior center Ron Higgins with 10 points.

Thad Davis Continues to Climb on the Charts -- Senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis enters the game with Heidelberg with 1,723 career points and 902 career rebounds and stands fifth on the all-time scoring list and fourth on the all-time rebounding list. Next up on the scoring list is the legendary Bob Walters (1959-63), who scored 1,840 points. All-time leading scorer Dean Martin (1969-73), who had 2,062 career points, is next on the rebounding list with 1,146.
Tom Harrington Has 360 Career Assists -- Senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington has 360 career assists and stands sixth on the all-time Yellow Jacket assist mark. Harrington led the OAC in assists a year ago with 139 and currently leads this year in assists with 109. Harrington was also named a finalist for the 2005 Bob Cousy Award which is given to the most outstanding point guard in all the NCAA, Division I, II and III.
Brendan Schuler Records First Double-Double -- During the win versus Marietta, freshman guard Brendan Schuler had his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 assists. Since Schuler has been named a starter fivegames ago, B-W is 5-0 and he is averaging 9.7 points a game and has recorded 19 assists.
Steve Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 361 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. He is 361-293 in 25 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 642-407 in 41 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasons at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 mark in three years at the high school level.
Two Tournament Titles -- The Yellow Jackets both both tournament that they competed in and are 7-0 in nonleague games. B-W won the season-opening Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament title and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Tom Harrington was the Most Valuable Player. The Jackets won the Hampden-Sydney (Va.) Tournament title as well, and senior forward Thad Davis was the MVP.
Al Sirat Grotto Day is on Feb. 12 -- On Saturday, February 12, B-W and the Al Sirat Grotto, a local philanthropic group, will combine to host its 20th Annual Al Sirat Grotto Basketball Game against Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m. Partial gate proceeds will go to benefit children with cerebral palsy. The members of the Grotto also will honor a player of the game from each school.
