Baldwin-Wallace Falls to 3rd-Ranked Hanover (Ind.) in Overtime, 87-82

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets took the third-ranked team in Division III, Hanover College of Indiana, to the limit tonight but fell to the Panthers, 87-82 in overtime, in the first round of The College of Wooster Mose Hole Classic at the Timken Physical Education Center in Wooster. The host, 13th-ranked Wooster, plays winless MacMurray of Illinois in the nightcap.

Hanover improved to 9-0 overall by outscoring the Yellow Jackets (7-3 overall), 15-10 in the extra session. Missed foul shots hurt B-W in regulation.

Despite the loss, B-W was led by junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) and sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) with a game-high 20 points each. Thad Davis and his younger brother, freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) tied for game-high honors with 10 rebounds each. Tori Davis had 12 points and six blocked shots. Junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Holy Name) had 16 points and 10 assists.

Hanover placed six players in double figures, led by senior Brian Chrin's 18 points off the bench.

B-W led by as many as nine points in the first half and 40-31 at the intermission. Then Hanover came back to take its first lead at 61-60 with 5:51 left in regulation when Chrin canned two foul shots. It was nip-and-tuck with six ties, including 72-all at the end of regulation.

In the extra session, Hanover jumped out to its biggest lead of the game at seven points at 81-74 on a three-pointer by Lanning with 1:07 left. In the final 37 seconds, Hanover canned six of eight foul shots to clinch the win despite eight points by Harrington.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow night when they face the loser of the Wooster and MacMurray game at 5:30 p.m. That game can be heard locally on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, with the pregame show beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Game Notes #10 vs. Hanover (Ind.)

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Wooster, Ohio to participate in The College of Wooster Mose Hole Classic on Monday and Tuesday, December 29-30, 2003.  Games will be played at the Timken Physical Education Center.  B-W will play Hanover (Ind.) College in the first round on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.  Host Wooster will play MacMurray (Ill.) College in the nightcap at 8:00 p.m.  The consolation and championships games are on Tuesday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will face its stiffest test of the season when it plays third-ranked Hanover of Indiana in the first round of The College of Wooster Mose Hole Classic at the Timken Physical Education Center in Wooster, Ohio.  Host Wooster plays MacMurray of Illinois in the nightcap.  The consolation and championship games are on Tuesday, December 30.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a  7-2 overall record following their 90-83 victory on December 20 against Marietta College in Berea.  B-W has a three-game winning streak, including Ohio Athletic Conference wins last week against Mount Union College (71-66) and Marietta.  The game against Hanover marks the third game this winter against a Top-20 opponent (see more in Yellow Jacket Chatter).
        Hanover enters this game with a perfect 8-0 overall record following its 63-54 win against Illinois Wesleyan University on December 18 at the Sherk Center in Bloomington, Illinois.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Hanover (Ind.) Series--  This is the first ever meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Hanover College in men's basketball. 

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks (Boardman) on the inside.  At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 19.1 ppg. and leads the OAC in both rebounding at 11.4 rpg. and blocked shots with 20.  Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 14.1 ppg., rebounding with 8.6 rpg. and with 19 blocked shots. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 12.0 ppg and is 15 of 36 from three-point range for 41.7 percent. Harrington is scoring 8.2 ppg. and tops the team with 52 assists.  Marks is averaging 6.8 ppg. and 2.0 rpg.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time.  In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play.  Williams has started two of the past three games.

The Hanover (Ind.) College Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Mike Beitzel to start 5'10" senior guard Thad McCracken and  6'0"  junior guard Matt Moore in the backcourt. Up front, look for 6'5" junior forward Ryan Lanning, 6'5" junior forward Tommy Dennis and 6'4" sophomore Ben Lye to start.
         Off the bench, look for Beitzel to play 6'0" sophomore guard Nate Minyard, 6'3" sophomore forward Brian Chrin and  6'6" freshman forward Frank Passaro. In addition, 5'10" sophomore guard Blake Pruesz, 5'11" sophomore guard paul Riehle, 6'4" sophomore forward Dwayne Guenther and 6'2" freshman guard Martin Wolf, Jr. could play.

In B-W's Last Game:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 90, Marietta -- 83  on Saturday, December 20 in Berea, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets won their third straight game and seventh in their last eight contests when they defeated OAC rival Marietta College, 90-83, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea on Saturday, December 20.   Junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis led all B-W scorers with 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  He was joined in double figures by his freshman brother, Tori Davis, with a double-double of a career-high 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Thad also blocked a pair of shots and Tori collected three blocked shots. Junior point guard Tom Harrington had a double-double of his own as he chipped in with 12 points and a career-high 12 assists. Sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth also scored in double figures with 13 points and freshman guard Matt Marks added 10 markers. For the game, the Yellow Jackets shot 54.5% from the floor and were seven of 13 from three-point range for 53.8%.

In Hanover's Last Game:  Hanover-- 63-- Illinois Wesleyan--54 on Thursday, December 18 in Bloomington, Illinois --  The third-ranked Panthers of Hanover College of Indiana defeated Illinois Wesleyan University, 63-54, on Thursday, December 18 in Bloomington, Illinois to improve to a perfect 8-0 on the season.  Hanover placed four players in double figures to defeat Illinois Wesleyan.  Sophomore forward Ben Lye and junior forward Ryan Lannig lead Hanover with 14 points each.  Junior forward Tommy Dennis chipped in with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Sophomore forward Brian Chrin also added 10 points for the Panthers.

Yellow Jacket Chatter

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 334 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 615-398 in 38 years overall.

Davis' Doubles -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) has six double figure scoring and double figure rebounding games this winter.  He began the season with five straight and leads B-W in scoring at 19.1 ppg. and tops the Ohio Athletic Conference in both rebounding (11.4 rpg.) and blocked shots (20).

He's Really Not the Other Davis -- Freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) is the brother of junior Thad Davis.  Tori, making his own mark on the court, is averaging 14.1 ppg., 8.6 rpg., shoots 57.0% from the floor and  is second in the OAC with 19 blocked shots.  He had a career-high six blocked shots against Mount Union on December 17 in Alliance and three more in the win versus Marietta.

Harrington Has Career-High --  Junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) had his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 assists in the win versus Mount Union.

Matt Marks is Making His Mark --  Freshman guard/ forward Matt Marks (Boardman) is making his mark in his initial year at B-W.  He has scored in double figures in four of the past six games, including three starting assignments.  Marks has been splitting the starting duties with sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid).

B-W Football Team Beat Hanover in the Division III Playoffs --  Hanover is no stranger to B-W.  The Yellow Jacket football team defeated Hanover, 54-32, this fall in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.

Football All-Americans --  Five Yellow Jacket football players, seniors Nate Mitchell (Butler, Pa./ Butler), Greg Koch (Olmsted Falls), Mark Anders (North Olmsted) and Ian Formaz (Wadsworth) and junior Nate Wilder (Youngstown Cardinal Mooney), all have been selected to the various Division III All-American teams.
        In addition, Mitchell is this year's OAC Paul Hoernemann Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Defensive Lineman, Koch is the Lee Tressel Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Defensive Back and Anders is the Mike Gregory Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Offensive Back.  Also, Defensive Coordinator Adam Howard was named as the OAC Assistant Coach of the Year.

Palmer Earns All-American Honors  --  Senior volleyball middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/ South Central) earned AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-American honors.  Palmer is the first B-W volleyball All-American since 1984.
