Yellow Jackets Defeat Cleveland Rival Case Western Reserve, 94-91, Tonight in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve University, 94-91, tonight (Nov. 23) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium.  The Yellow Jackets defeated the Spartans for the fifth straight time and now lead the all-time series, 73-66.

With the win B-W improves to 3-0 overall.  With its loss CWRU falls to 0-3 overall.

In the first half, Case jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind a layup and free-throw conversion by Carson Oren.  B-W responded on its next possession to tie the game behind a Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) turnaround jump shot.  B-W scored its next eight points to jump to early 10-5 lead before an Andrew Impastato three-pointer cut the lead to two at the 17:03 mark.  A jumper by Thad Davis at the 16:15 mark, began a 24-9 B-W run to extend the lead to as much as 17 points when the score was 36-19 with 8:53 remaining.  A layup by Oren started the Case comeback as they went on a 21-10 run to put the first half score at 46-40. 

Case opened the second half with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 46 behind baskets from Oren, Funso Lafe and Matt Cannan.  A layup and free throw conversion by Tori Davis at the 15:05 mark put the score at 61-57.  A steal and layup by Jeremy Sallee tied the game at 61.  B-W lead by as many as nine points, at 90-81, in the second period of play when Tori Davis canned a jumper with 2:40 remaining.  The Yellow Jackets lead 92-91 with :29 seconds left before a Thad Davis steal, with :10 left, and two free throws by Matt Marks sealed the B-W victory.

Thad Davis scored a game-high 29 points, including making 13 of 17 from the free throw line, pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds and added five blocks.  With his 29 points tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,395 career points and moves into 11th on the all-time scoring list.  Tori Davis added 26 points and nine rebounds and Tom Harrington also scored in double-figures with 13 markers.  Oren lead all CWRU scorers with 23 points and Lafe chipped in with 22.

B-W will play their next game this Saturday November 27, when they travel to Granville, Pennsylvania to square off against Thiel College.  Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #3 vs. Case Western Reserve University

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will host Cleveland cross-town and nonleague rival Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m.  It is B-W’s home opener.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will play host to Cleveland cross-town and nonleague rival Case Western Reserve University in its home opener.
        The Yellow Jackets opened the season by winning the Gettysburg College Days Inn Tournament last weekend in Gettysburg, Pennyslvania.  B-W defeated the University of Mary Washington (Va.), 64-57, in the first round and beat host Gettysburg  College, 59-57, on a buzzer-beater in the championship game.
        CWRU opened its season with a 0-2 record in Erie, Pennsylvania at the Penn State-Behrend Tournament.  The Spartans lost to host PSU-Behrend, 71-58, in the first round and then lost to Bethany (W.Va.) College, 91-82, in the consolation game.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Case Western Reserve Series--  This is the 139th meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Case Western Reserve University.  The series is led by Baldwin-Wallace, 72-66.  Last season, the Yellow Jackets defeated CWRU, 80-67, in University Circle.  B-W has won four straight meetings against the Spartans.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6’4” sophomore swingman Matt Marks (Boardman) at the post positions.  At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Tori Davis tops the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game, and Thad Davis leads the squad in rebounding with 9.0 rpg.  Thad Davis is also second in scoring at 12.5 ppg.  Tom Harrington is third in scoring at 11.5 ppg., first with 11 assists, five three-pointers and by shooting 61.5 percent from the field (eight-of-13). Tori Davis and freshman Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa.) are tied for the lead in steals with four each.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6’4” senior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), the 6’0” Sekerak, 6’2” junior forward Dan Gundert (Wellington), 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5’11” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/Fairview).  Sekerak and Meyer are each averaging 5.0 ppg. after two games.

The Case Western Reserve University Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for second-year Head Coach Sean McDonnell to start 6’1” junior Andrew Impastato, 6’3” sophomore Matt Cannan and 6’0” Funso Lafe in the backcourt and 6’4” junior Carson Oren and 6’5” senior Dave Lenzer at forward.  Both Lafe and Oren are returning All-University Athletic Association players.  Cannan tops the Spartans in scoring after two games at 19.5 ppg. and is tied with Oren for the team-high in rebounds as each player has grabbed 5.5 rpg.  Lafe is second in scoring at 16.0 ppg. and Oren is third at 13.5 ppg.  5’10 freshman guard Jeremy Sallee came off the bench to lead the team with eight assists and Oren had six. Off the bench, look for McDonnell to play Sallee, 5’11” freshman guard Brandon Bradford and 6’3” sophomore swingman Chris Hill.

IN B-W’S FIRST GAME OF 2004-2005:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 64, Mary Washington (Va.) -- 57 on Nov. 19 at the Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament -- Sophomore forward Tori Davis led three Yellow Jackets in double figures as B-W defeated the University of Mary Washington, 64-57, in the opening round of the Gettysburg (Pa.) Tournament on November 19.  Tori Davis scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots.  Joining him in double figures were senior point guard Tom Harrington with 12 points and seven assists, and senior forward Thad Daviswith 10 points and seven rebounds.

IN B-W’S SECOND GAME:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 59, Gettysburg (Pa.) --57 on Nov. 20 -- Tori Davis stole an inbound pass aand scored on a layup at the buzzer as B-W defeated host Gettysburg (Pa.) College, 59-57, in the championship game of the Gettysburg Days Inn Tournament.  With Gettysburg attempting to inbound the ball with 2.2 seconds remaining in the game and hoping for its own game-winning shot, Davis tipped the ball, caught it and laid it in at the buzzer to break a 57-all tie.  Thad Davis led the Yellow Jackets with game-highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds.  He was joined in double figures by Tori Davis with 12 points and Tom Harrington with 11 markers, including three-of-four shooting from three-point range.

Harrington Earns MVP Honors -- Tom Harrington was named as the Most Valuable Player of the Gettysburg Days Inn Tournament.  Harrington scored 23 points, passed for 11 assists, grabbed four rebounds canned five-of-eight three-pointers for 61.5 percent and made just two turnovers in 75 minutes of action (out of a possible 80 total minutes) for a 5.5:1 assist to turnover ratio.  Harrington was joined on the all-tourney team by Thad Davis.

IN CWRU’s FIRST GAME:  Penn State-Behrend -- 71, Case -- 58 at the PSU-Behrend Tournament --  Host Penn State-Behrend defeated Case, 71-58, in the first round of the PSU-Behrend Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania on November 19.  Despite the loss, junior guard Funso Lafe led three Spartans in double figures with 17 points.  Joining him in double digits were sophomore guard Matt Cannan with 15 points and junior forward Carson Oren had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

IN CWRU’s SECOND GAME:  Bethany (W.Va.) -- 91, Case -- 82 at the PSU-Behrend Tournament -- The Spartans lost the consolation game at the PSU-Behrend Tournament, 91-82, to Bethany College of West Virginia on November 20 in Erie, Pennsylvania.  Despite the loss, Matt Cannanhad a team-high 24 points. Andrew Impastato and Funso Lafe each had 15 points and Carson Oren 14 as the Spartans dropped to 0-2 overall.

LAST YEAR IN UNIVERSITY CIRCLE:  B-W -- 80, Case -- 67 on November 26, 2003 at Case -- Current senior All-OAC forward Thad Davis and current junior All-OAC guard Keith Aufmuth each scored 17 points and current sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis added 13 markers as B-W defeated host and rival Case, 80-67, in Horsbaugh Gymnasium in University Circle.  B-W outscored Case 44-30 in the second half to erase a 37-36 Spartan lead at halftime.  A key to the B-W win was that the Yellow Jackets canned 18 of 21 foul shots for 85.7 percent.  Case was led by Carson Oren with a game-high 26 points and Funso Lafe added 16 points.

The National Polls -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets are ranked 16th in the d3hoops.com Division III national preseason poll.

B-W Picked First in the OAC -- The B-W Yellow Jackets were tabbed to finish first in the rugged Ohio Athletic Conference in the OAC Preseason Coaches poll.  B-W received eight of nine first place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team so only nine first place votes were possible).

Three Return as All-OAC Players and One as an Academic All-OAC selection --  Senior forward Thad Davis returns as a first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference player from a year ago.  He was also a second-team All-Great Lakes Region pick by the D3hoops.com Web Site.  Joining Thad Davis on the 2003-2004 All-OAC team were sophomore forward Tori Davis as a second-team pick and junior guard Keith Aufmuth as an honorable mention choice.  In addition, senior point guard Tom Harrington was an Academic All-OAC selection.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  This is Steve Bankson’s 40th year as a head coach. With his 347 victories at B-W, Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  Bankson, who has been at B-W for 26 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, is 347-290 at B-W and has a career mark of 628-404 in 40 years overall.
