BEREA, OHIO -- Freshman guard Matt Marks (Boardman) scored a career-high 21 points as the visiting Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Capital University, 67-63, today (January 10) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Capital Center in Bexley.
With its win, B-W is 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the OAC. With its loss, Capital drops to 9-4 overall and 3-3 and broke a two-game losing streak
Joining Marks in double figure scoring for B-W was junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) with 15 points and six rebounds and junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) with 12 points. Capital placed four players in double figures, led by senior forward Tyler Alexander with 15 points and eight rebounds.
In the first half, B-W led by as many as four points, at 17-13, with 11:48 left before the intermission when junior forward Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian School) canned a three-pointer. The game was tied at halftime, 28-28. In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as six points, at 66-60, with 26 seconds left in the game when sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) canned a foul shot.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action next Wednesday, January 14, when they play host to OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team will travel to Bexley, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Capital Center at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to Bexley to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University at the Capital Center.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 8-4 overall and 3-2 OAC record following their 89-80 loss at Ohio Northern University on Wednesday. The loss dropped B-W from a four-way tie for first place in the OAC.
Capital enters this game with a 9-3 overall and 3-2 OAC record following its 81-77 win in three overtimes against Mount Union College in Alliance on January 7. The Crusaders have won three straight games.
The All-Time Baldwin-Wallace Versus Capita All-Time Series-- This is the 77th all-time meetings between Baldwin-Wallace College and Capital University in men's basketball. The Crusaders lead the all-time series between the two schools, 42-34, including five straight victories. Capital won the last meeting, 79-70, on February 15, 2003 in Bexley The last B-W win came on February 10, 2001 in Berea where B-W prevailed, 72-63.
The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'5" freshman Nick Meyer (Mentor) on the inside. At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).
Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 20.8 ppg. and leads the OAC in rebounding at 10.8 rpg. He is second in the OAC and on the team in blocked shots with 27. Tori Davis is second on the team in scoring at 13.2 ppg., third in the OAC in rebounding at 8.2 rpg. and first in the OAC with 32 blocked shots. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 13.1 ppg and is first with 21 three-pointers and is shooting 89.5 percent from the foul line (34 of 38). Harrington is scoring 8.7 ppg. and tops the team and OAC with 72 assists and has canned 19 treys. Meyer, who made his first career start at ONU, is averaging 3.6 ppg. and has five treys.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'5" freshman wing Matt Marks (Boardman), 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time. In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play.
The Capital University Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach Damon Goodwin to start 6'6" senior forward Tyler Alexander and 6'7" junior forward Jake Beck on the inside. In the backcourt, Coach Goodwin will start 6'4" senior wing Mark Denner, 6'1" freshman point guard Brian Alge, and 6'0" senior guard Adam Stolly. Stolly tops the Crusaders in scoring at 14.8 ppg. and has canned a team-leading 19 three-pointers. Beck is second in scoring at 11.8 ppg. and tops the team with 6.8 rpg. Alexander is third at 10.0 ppg. and second in rebounding at 5.0 rpg. Denner, who is starting in place of injured senior forward Tyler Schleich, is scoring 7.4 ppg. Alge, who has started the past three games, is scoring 5.5 ppg. with 10 treys.
Off the bench, look for Coach Goodwin to play 6'6" senior forward Chuck Bihn, 6'5" junior wing Sammy Smith, and 5'10" freshman point guard David Johnson. Smith, a transfer from Division I Dayton, is scoring 8.9 ppg. but has been limited due to a back injury. Johnson is second on the team with 29 assists.
For Capital, Schleich has been lost for the season with a knee injury. Additionally, Chuck Bihn just rejoined the team after not playing during the first half of 2003-2004. He was an All-OAC player a year ago and had six points and four rebounds in his first game of the season on Wednesday versus Mount Union.
In B-W's Last Game: Ohio Northern -- 89, Baldwin-Wallace -- 80 on Wednesday, January 7 in Ada, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets were defeated at Ohio Northern, 89-80, at the ONU Sports Center in Ada. B-W canned 15 of its first 18 shots and built a 22-point lead at 38-16 with 4:29 left in the first half before ONU closed to within 44-30 at the intermission. ONU went on a 12-2 run to start the second half and tied the game at 54-all before going on to win its fifth straight game. Despite the loss,junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis led B-W in scoring with a career-high 31 points and nine rebounds. He canned 10 of 15 field goals and all 11 of his foul shots. He was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth with 15 points and freshman forward Tori Davis with 13 points and six rebounds.
In Capital's Last Game: Capital-- 81-- Mount Union --77 in Triple Overtime on Wednesday, January 7 in Alliance, Ohio -- The Crusaders defeated the Purple Raiders of Mount Union College, 81-77 in triple overtime, at the Timken Physical Education Building in Alliance on Wednesday night. After a 59-all tie at the end of regulation and a 66-all deadlock after one O.T., Capital's Mark Denner canned a three-pointer with four seconds left in the second extra session to tie it at 73-all. Senior forward Trevor Alexander had four of Capital's eight points in the third O.T. to pace the win. Senior point guard Adam Stolly paced the Crusaders with 19 points, junior forward Jake Beck had 15, Alexander 13 and Denner 10.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 335 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 616-400 in 38 years overall.
Thad Davis' Doubles -- Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) has had eight double figure scoring and double figure rebounding games so far this winter. He began the season with five straight and leads B-W in scoring at 20.8 ppg. and tops the Ohio Athletic Conference in rebounding (10.8 rpg.) and is second in blocked shots with 27.
Tori is Really Not the Other Davis -- Freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) is the younger brother of junior Thad Davis. Tori, making his own mark on the court, is averaging 13.2 ppg., 8.2 rpg., shoots 57.1% from the floor and is first in the OAC with 32 blocked shots, including 22 in his last five games (4.4 bpg.) and 13 in the two games at the Wooster Tournament on December 29-30.
Three Yellow Jacket Players are also OAC Statistical Leaders -- Thad Davis leads the OAC in rebounding with 10.8 rpg. Tori Davis leads the OAC in blocked shots with 32. Junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Holy Name) leads the OAC in assists with 72.
Nick Meyer Makes First Start -- Freshman wing player Nick Meyer (Mentor) made his first career start at ONU and had two points and two rebounds in 22 minutes of action.
Women's Basketball Team is Ranked With a Streak -- The women's basketball team enters its home game on Saturday with Capital at 12-0 overall, in first place in the OAC at 5-0, ranked ninth nationally in Division III in both the d3hoops.com Internet Web Site poll and in the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association)/ USA Today poll and has a 24-game home regular season winning streak.
The Wrestling Team is 3-0, Ranked 29th Nationally and at the Division III National Duals -- The Yellow Jacket wrestling team is 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC and ranked 29th in the latest National Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association Adidas-Brute poll. Today, the Yellow Jackets are competing in the second day of action at the Division III National Dual Match Championships at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. To date, sophomore 125-pound All-American Jared Selover (Wapakoneta) is ranked fourth nationally at his weight class and senior 165-pounder Joe Heiland (Shelby), a national qualifier a year ago, topped the team with 12 victories and a 12-3 record.
Swim Teams at Bethany Today -- The Yellow Jacket swimming teams are competing at Bethany College of West Virginia today (Jan.10). The women are 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the OAC and the men are 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.
Football All-Americans -- Five Yellow Jacket football players, seniors Nate Mitchell (Butler, Pa./ Butler), Greg Koch (Olmsted Falls), Mark Anders (North Olmsted) and Ian Formaz (Wadsworth) and junior Nate Wilder (Youngstown Cardinal Mooney), all have been selected to the various Division III All-American teams.
In addition, Mitchell is this year's OAC Paul Hoernemann Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Defensive
Lineman, Koch is the Lee Tressel Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Defensive Back and Anders is the Mike Gregory Award winner as the OAC's Most Valuable Offensive Back. Also, Defensive Coordinator Adam Howard was named as the OAC Assistant Coach of the Year.
Harbour Repeats as Academic All-American -- Senior offensive guard Joe Harbour (Upper Sandusly) repeated as an Academic All-American and made the first-team this year after earning second-team accolades a year ago.
Palmer Earns All-American Honors -- Senior volleyball middle hitter Cassie Palmer (Greenwich/ South Central) earned AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-American honors. Palmer is the first B-W volleyball All-American since 1984.
