The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket Men Beat Capital, 81-79, for Their Ninth Straight Victory

BEREA, OHIO —  Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds today as the first place Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team won its ninth straight game and defeated third place Capital University, 81-79, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium.

With its victory, B-W improves to 18-5 overall and 13-3 in the OAC and is now all alone in first place as John Carroll lost 74-72 at Ohio Northern.  With its loss, Capital drops to 16-7 overall and 10-6 in the OAC.

In addition to Thad Davis, sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) had 16 points, freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) had 15 points and junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Holy Name) had 10 markers.  For Capital, junior forward Jake Beck led three Crusader double figure scorers with 21 points.

In the first half, there were six lead changes and six ties before B-W led by as many as nine points at 41-32 when Aufmuth scored on a layup with 52.9 seconds left before intermission.  B-W also led at halftime, 41-32.  In the second half, Capital began with a 14-0 run to take the lead and built its largest lead of five points at 48-43 with 15:14 left in the game when Alexander scored.  B-W then outscored Capital 31-18 to lead by as many as eight points at 74-66 with 2:51 left when Thad Davis scored on a layup.  Capital would then close the gap to 80-79 with 5:04 seconds left before Harrington canned a foul shot with 3.97 seconds left.  A last second Capital shot missed and B-W won and moved into first place all alone.

With his 24 points today, Thad Davis now has 1,294 career points and is now 13th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list. Tonight, he surpassed All-American Dick "The Stork" Retherford who scored 1,288 points from 1949-52.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to University Heights to battle John Carroll in a game that could decide the OAC regular season title.  Game time at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center is 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #23 vs. Capital

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET men's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University on Saturday, February 14, 2004 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio at 3:00 p.m.  Today is Seniors', Alumni and Al Sirat Grotto Day at B-W. 

 


AL SIRAT GROTTO DAY --  The Al Sirat Grotto is a local Berea organization/ club.  The philantrophy of the group is to benefot children with cerebral plasy.  Partial gate proceeds from this game will go tgo benefit those children.  Following the game, the Grotto will also provide a plaque to the Most Outstanding Player from each team. 

 


RADIO --  All away and some select home B-W men's basketball games are broadcast on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and on the College Internet Web Site.  Today's game versus Capital will not be broadcast.  There will be live reports of the men's game on WBWC as a part of the women's basketball game broadcast from Bexley.

The Pregame Notes -- The first place Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its ninth straight game when it hosts Capital University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 17-5 overall and 12-3 OAC record following their 78-69 win against Ohio Northern University on Wednesday Berea.  The win was a season-high eighth straight for B-W.
        Capital enters this game tied for third place in the OAC with a 16-6 overall and 10-5 OAC record following its 73-64 win against Mount Union College on Wednesday in Bexley. The Crusaders have won four of their last five games and seven of their last nine overall.

The Current OAC Standings -- Baldwin-Wallace and John Carroll University are tied for first place at 12-3.  Capital, Otterbein College and Ohio Northern University are in a three-way tie for third place at 10-5.  Mt. Union is in sixth place at 8-7.  In other key games today, JCU is at ONU and Otterbein is at Muskingum.  The 2004 OAC Tournament begins on Monday, February 23.

The All-Time Baldwin-Wallace Versus Capital All-Time Series--  This is the 78th all-time meetings between Baldwin-Wallace College and Capital University in men's basketball.  The Crusaders lead the all-time series between the two schools, 42-35.  Capital had won the five previous meetings before B-W won the last one, 67-63, on January 10, 2004 in Bexley.  Before the win Bexley, the last B-W win  was on  February 10, 2001 in Berea where B-W prevailed, 72-63.

The First Time They Met This Year:  On Saturday, January 10, 2004 in Bexley, Ohio:  Baldwin-Wallace --  67, Capital --  63--  The Yellow Jackets defeated the Crusaders of Capital University, 67-63, on January 10, 2004 in Bexley.  In the win, freshman guard Matt Marks (Boardman) scored a game and career-high 21 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.  In addition, junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) had 15 points and six rebounds and junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had 12 markers.  Capital had four double figure scorers and was led by senior forward Tyler Alexander's 15 points.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis, 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) and 6'5" freshman Matt Marks on the inside.  At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn).  Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 19.3 ppg. and leads the OAC in rebounding at 10.5 rpg.  Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 14.9 ppg., rebounding with 8,2 rpg. and leads the OAC with 53 blocked shots. Aufmuth is third in scoring at 13,2 ppg and is first with 39 three-pointers. Harrington is scoring 8.7 ppg. and tops the OAC with 117 assists and has canned 33 treys.  Marks is averaging 7.9 ppg. and 2.9 rpg.
        Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'2" sophomore guard/ forward Dan Gundert (Wellington) and 6'4" junior post player Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

The Capital University  Probable Starters and Preview-- Look for Head Coach  Damon Goodwin to start 6'6" senior forward Tyler Alexander and 6'7" junior forward Jake Beck on the inside.  In the backcourt, Coach Goodwin will start  6'4" senior wing Mark Denner, 5'10" freshman point guard David Johnson, and 6'0" senior guard Adam Stolly.  Stolly tops the Crusaders in scoring at 13.7 ppg. and has canned a team-leading 34 three-pointers.  Beck is second in scoring at 12.5 ppg. and tops the team with 6.9 rpg.  Alexander is third at 11.1ppg. and second in rebounding at 6.1  rpg.  Denner, who is starting in place of injured senior forward Tyler Schleich, is scoring 6.7 ppg.  Johnson, is scoring 4.1 ppg. and is second on the team in assists with 57 and fsecond in steals at 26.
         Off the bench, look for Coach Goodwin to play 6'6" senior forward Chuck Bihn, 6'5" junior wing Sammy Smith, and 6'1" junior point guard David Kalb.  Smith, a transfer from Division I Dayton, is scoring 8.1 ppg. but has been limited due to a back injury.

In B-W's Last Game:  Baldwin-Wallace --  78,  Ohio Northern-- 69 on Wednesday, February 11 in Berea, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets were led by junior forward Thad Davis with 25 points and 17 rebounds.  He canned eight of 13 field goal attempts and 11 of 13 free throws.  Also in double figures for the Jackets' were freshman forward Tori Davis with 20 points and sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth chipped in with 11. Ohio Northern was led by senior Jim Conrad who had a game-high 29 points on 11 of 26 from the field.

In Capital's Last Game:  Capital --73 Mount Union--  64 on Wednesday,  February 11 in Bexley, Ohio --  The Crusaders improved to 16-6 overall and 10-5 in the OAC with a 73-64 win against Mount Union College at the Capital Center in Bexley on Wednesday night.  The win was the fourth in the last five games for Capital.  The Crusaders were led by junior forward Jake Beck with game-highs of 23 points and eight rebounds. Joining him in double figures was senior guard Adam Stolly with 15 points and senior forward Tyler Alexander with 13 points.  Mt. Union was led by Chris Blakely with 12 points.

Yellow Jacket Chatter

A Season-High Eight Game Win Streak --  B-W has a season-high eight-game winning streak.  The previous high was four games.  In the eight-game streak, B-W has beaten Muskingum and Heidelberg each twice as well as Marietta, Mount Union, Wilmington and Ohio Northern.

15 in the Last 16 Years --  B-W has already clinched a 15th season in the last 16 years with a .500 or better record.

Listed Among Others Receiving Votes -- B-W is listed in this week's d3hoops.com Internet Web Site Division III national rankings in the "Other School Receiving Votes" section.  It is the first time that B-W has made the d3hoops.com list this year.

Thad Davis is Now 14th All-Time in Scoring--  Junior All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored 25 points on Wednesday against ONU and enters the Capital game with 1,270 career points.  His 17 rebounds give him 613 career rebounds which ranks seventh all-time.

The OAC Statistical Leaders --  Thad Davis tops the OAC in rebounding at 10.5 rpg.  Younger brother, freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) leads the OAC with 53 blocked shots.  Junior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) leads the OAC with 117 assists.

Double-Doubles --  Thad and Tori Davis have combined for 17 double-doubles of points and rebounds this year.  Thad has 10 and Tori seven.  Tom Harrington has two double-doubles of points and assists.

Bankson Continues to Climb Win Chart --  Veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson enters the Capital game with  at 344 wins at B-W 625 in his career.  Bankson is  344-287 in 24 years at B-W and  625-401 in 39 years overall as a head coach at Port Huron (Mich.) High School, 232 at Lorain County Community College and B-W.

Don't Foul Marks and Meyer --  Freshman guard/ forward players Matt Marks (Boardman) and Nick Meyer (Mentor) have combined to connect on  46 of 49 foul shots for 93.8 percent.  Marks is  18 of 18 and Meyer is 28 of 31.
