the Yellow Jackets to the Road for the OAC Tournament
BEREA, OHIO — Senior forward Jake Beck scored 20 points and five players in double figures today (Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005) as the Capital University men’s basketball team beat Baldwin-Wallace College, 95-93 in double overtime, in the final Ohio Athletic Conference regular season game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
With its win, Capital improved to 16-8 overall and 12-6 in the OAC and won its second straight game. With its loss, B-W dropped to 17-8 overall and 10-8 in the OAC and lost for the fifth time in its last six games.
In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led by as many as 14 points, 20-6, at 12:16 when junior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) hit a short jumper. Capital then went on a 13-2 run to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to three points at 22-19 at the 6:58 mark when freshman forward Mark Tinklenberg hit a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets would then outscore the Crusaders 18-13 to stretch their lead to eight points at halftime, 40-32.
In the second half, Capital outscored B-W 10-2 to tie the score at 50-50 when freshman center Brad Buckner made a free-throw to finish a three-point play with 14:07 remaining in the game. B-W then went on a 11-2 run capped by a free-throw from Aufmuth giving the Yellow Jackets a 61-52 lead with 9:38 left in the second stanza. B-W reached its biggest lead of the game at10 points with 8:31 left when junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/ Kenmore) made a short jumper to give the Yellow Jackets a 65-55 lead. The Crusaders battled back again to outscore B-W 18-8 to tie the score at 73-all with 36 seconds to play when Tinklenberg hit another three-pointer. Following a B-W turnover, Beck's shot at a game-winner was blocked by Yellow Jacket sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elryia/ Open Door) and forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, the lead changed five times and there were four ties before B-W took a four-point lead at 85-81 with 1:15 left when freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry) made one of two foul shots, but Capital senior guard David Kalb connected on two three-pointers to give the Crusaders an 87-85 lead with 15 seconds left. Then B-W senior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) canned a pair of clutch foul shots with 4:18 seconds left to force a second overtime. Capital again had a chance to win it but a Tinkleberg trey was off the mark.
In the second extra session, Capital led the entire time and by as many as three-points at 94-91 with 1:49 left when freshman center Brad Buckner scored on a tip-in off his own miss. Then Thad Davis made two foul shots to cut the lead to 94-93 with 40 seconds left. A foul shot by sophomore guard David Johnson with six seconds remaining then gave Capital a 95-93 lead. Sekerak then missed a chance to win it again. and end the marathon.
Joining Beck in double figures for Capital were Kalb and Tinkleberg with 17 points each, freshman center Jake Measler had 15 and Buckner had 13.
For B-W, Thad Davis led the way with a game-high 32 points, including making 16-of-20 foul shots, and a game-high 11 rebounds. In addition, Aufmuth had a career-high 26 points and Tori Davis had 18 points and eight rebounds.
With Thad Davis's 32 points and 11 rebounds today, he now has 1,849 career points and 961 career rebounds to rank fourth all-time in scoring and rebounding in B-W history.
B-W will open 2005 OAC Tournament play on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The Yellow Jackets will be the No. 6 seed and will travel to No. 3 seed Otterbein College at 7:30 p.m. in Westerville.

This is the final OAC regular season game for each team. The 2005 OAC Tournament begins on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 17-7 overall and 11-7 OAC record following their 78-73 loss at Ohio Northern University on Wednesday (Feb. 16) in Ada. The Yellow Jackets have lost four of their last five contests and are in a fifth place tie in the OAC Standings with Muskingum College.
Capital enters this game with a 15-8 overall and 11-6 OAC record following its 99-82 victory against Marietta College on Wednesday (Feb. 16) in Bexley. The Crusaders victory broke a three-game losing streak. Capital is tied for third place in the OAC Standings with ONU.
The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Capital University Series-- This is the 80th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Capital University in men’s basketball. The Crusaders lead the series between the two schools, 42-37, but B-W has won the last three meetings. On December 18, 2004, B-W won in Bexley, 72-55. B-W also beat Capital twice last year. Capital’s last win came on Feb. 15, 2003 when the Crusaders defeated the Yellow Jackets, 79-70, in Bexley.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6’4” senior two-time All-OAC forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), his brother, 6’4” sophomore All-OAC forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School). At the point guard will be 5’11” senior Academic All-OAC player Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6’0” junior All-OAC player Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn). Rounding out the starters will be 6’2” sophomore guard Nick Meyer (Mentor). Thad Davis tops the team in scoring with 20.0 points per game, grabs 12.3 rebounds per game and is canning 59.2 percent of his field goals (183-of-309). Tori Davis is second in scoring at17.7 ppg., second with 8.5 rpg., 53 blocked shots and 19 steals, and is shooting 59.2 percent from the floor (158-of-267). Keith Aufmuth is third in scoring at 9.5 ppg., first with 42 treys and is second with 81 assists. Tom Harrington is fourth in scoring at 9.3 ppg., first with 146 assists, second with 34 three-pointers and leads the OAC in assist-to-turnover ratio. Sophomore guard Nick Meyer scores 3.8 ppg., and has 15 three-pointers.
Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6’4” swingman Matt Marks (Boardman), 6’0” freshman guard Tyler Sekerak (Corry, Pa./ Corry), , 6’5” junior forward Charod Hale (Akron/Kenmore), and 5’11” freshman guard Brendan Schuler (Fairview Park/ Fairview). Marks is averaging 5.3 ppg. and has 15 three-pointers. Schuler is averaging 3.9 ppg. and Sekerak is scoring 3.6 ppg.
Capital Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Damon Goodwin to start 6’7” senior post Jake Beck and 6’7” freshman Jake Meisler at the post positions. At the point guard will be 5’10” sophomore David Johnson and at the guard positions will be 6’1” sophomore Brian Alge and 6’2” senior David Kalb. Beck leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 15.6 ppg. and 6.3 rpg. Johnson is second in scoring with 13.0 ppg. and first on the team with 83 assists and has 17 three-pointers. Kalb is the third leading scorer at 11.0 ppg. and second in assists with 79. Meisler is fourth in scoring at 6.3 ppg. and is pulling down 4.3 rpg. Alge is scoring 5.6 ppg.
Off the bench look for Coach Goodwin to play 6’0’ sophomore point guard Bill Cullom 6’3” wing Eric Rosenbeck and 6’4” forward Mark Tinklenberg. Cullom is averaging 3.0 ppg.

There were four Jackets in double-figures and they were led by senior forward Thad Davis with game-highs of 20 points and 15 rebounds. Also in double figures were sophomore forward Tori Davis with 13 points, sophomore guard Nick Meyer with 11 and junior guard Keith Aufmuth with 10 markers. Senior forward Jake Beck led Capital with 18 points.

Despite the loss, sophomore forward Tori Davis had 24 points, a career-high eight blocked shots and eight rebounds to lead the way. Also in double figures were senior forward Thad Davis with 12 points and 13 rebounds for his 19th double-double of the season, and senior point guard Tom Harrington with 11 points and seven assists.
In Capital’s Last Game on February 16, 2005 versus Marietta in Bexley, Ohio: Capital -- 99, Marietta -- 82 -- In Capital’s last game, the Crusaders defeated the Pioneers of Marietta College, 99-82, on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005 in Bexley at the Capital center. Leading the way for Capital was sophomore guard David Johnson with a game-high 24 points and four assists and senior forward Jake Beck with a game-high-tying 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Senior Thad Davis is Among B-W Greats -- With his 1,817 career points, Thad Davis is fifth on College the all-time scoring list. Thad also has 950 career rebounds and is fourth on that all-time list. Next up on the scoring list is No.4 Bob Walters (1959-63), who scored 1,840 points. Thad's 950 rebounds are less than 200 shy of No.3 Bob Scelza (1981-84). Thad also has become the school’s all-time leader in blocked shots this season. With his 49 blocks this season, he now has 179 for his career and surpassed former B-W All-American Kevin Braaten (1993-1997) who had 169 in his stellar career. Braaten is also is the school’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,867 career points.
Senior Tom Harrington Also Among All-Time Leaders -- Tom Harrington is fifth all-time in assists with 396 in his career. Harrington has led the OAC in assists the past two years with 139 a year ago and his current total of 146. Tom is just 12 assists shy of setting a school-record for assists in a single-season. The record holder is former B-W Academic All-American and current Garfield Trinity High School Head Coach Wayne Bilinovic (1986-1990) who set the record with 158 assists. Harrington is also a finalist for this year’s ESPN/ Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year award. He is just one of three Division III finalist.
Five Double Their Pleasure This Year -- Five Yellow Jackets, Thad Davis and Tori Davis, Keith Aufmuth, Tom Harrington and Brendan Schuler have all recorded a double-double this year. Thad and Tori Davis lead the way with 19 and 10, respectively, and have done it with points and rebounds. Harrington, Aufmuth and Schuler have all done it once each and by way of points and assists.
Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach -- With his 362 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history. He is 362-297 in 26 years at B-W. Bankson has a career mark of 643-413 in 40 years overall, including a 232-90 mark in 12 seasons at Lorain (County) Community College and a 49-25 marks in three years at the high school level.
