B-W Defeats Thiel, 75-60; Wins Third in A Row

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Thiel College of Pennsylvania, 75-60, in a non-conference game tonight at the Rudolph Urpsrung Gymnasium in Berea. With the win, the Jackets improve to 3-1 overall and have won three straight games.

The Yellow Jackets were led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door) with a game-high 21 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks giving him his fourth straight double-double.  Joining him in double figures were sophomore guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) with 15 points, a game-high nine assists, and five rebounds, and freshman forward Tori Davis (Elyria/Open Door) with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Forward D. J. Gambridge led Thiel with 15 points and five rebounds.

Baldwin-Wallace lead by 17 points at 46-29 at the half, but Thiel cut the lead to eight at 57-49 with 8:39 remaining in the contest.  B-W raised their lead to 13 at 71-58 when Thad Davis hit a jump shot with 1:38 and the Tomctas never got closer.  The win gave Head Coach Steve Bankson his 611th career victory.

Baldwin-Wallace will return to action on Wednesday, December 3 when they travel to Oberlin College for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:30.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team will look to win its third straight game when it hosts nonleague foe Thiel College of Pennsylvania in its home opener.

The Yellow Jackets have beaten Dickinson (Pa.) College, 65-31, last Saturday and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve Univesity, 80-67, this past Wednesday and are looking to make it three straight wins overall with a triumph over Thiel.

Thiel enters the game with a 1-2 record after being defeated in the first game by Mt. Union, 81-66, and then lost in the consolation game to Chowan (N.C.), 89-63. The Tomcats will look to make it two wins in a row after a 77-76 win over La Roche at the Kerr Center

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Thiel Series-- This is the ninth all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Thiel College in men's basketball. B-W leads the series, 5-3, including a 73-71 victory in the last meeting on Nov. 30, 2002, in Greenville, Pennsylvania. B-W has also won two straight games in the series. Thiel's last win was a 81-73 victory in the first round of the Thiel Tournament in 1999.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Starters -- See scoring averages and other information in the box to the right. Look for veteran Yellow Jackets Head Coach Steve Bankson to start 6'3" junior Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School), 6'3" freshman Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) and 6'4" junior Jeremy Coffey (Hudson/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) on the inside.  At the point guard will be 5'11" junior Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) and at the wing will be 6'0" sophomore Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn). Thad Davis leads the team in scoring at 17.3 ppg. and in rebounding at 12.3 rpg. Tori Davis is second in scoring and rebounding at 11.7 ppg. and 7.3 rpg. Keith Aufmuth is scoring 11.0 ppg. and Tom Harrington tops the team with 15 assists and is averaging 6.3 ppg.

The Baldwin-Wallace Bench Bunch -- Off the bench, look for Bankson to play 6'2" freshman guard Nick Meyer (Mentor), 6'5" freshman wing player Matt Marks (Boardman) and 6'0" freshman guard David Rispinto (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) to all see time.  In addition, 6'1" sophomore guard Greg Williams (Euclid) and 6'6" sophomore post player Mark Belkofer (Millbury/Genoa) will play. 

The Thiel Probable Starters and Preview-- The starters are listed in the box below and to the right. Look for second-year Head Coach Mike Snell to start 6'0" juniors Daryl Moore and Ryan Singleton at the guard positions. At the forward positions, look for 6'3" senior Mike Banach and 6'6" seniors Dennis Bott and D.J. Gambridge to start. Moore is the top scorer at 15.7 ppg. with Banach at 9.3 ppg., Sweeting at 9.0 ppg., Laird at 8.3 ppg., Kwolek at 7.7 ppg. and Gambridge at 7.0 ppg. Laird is the top rebounder at 5.3 per game. Singleton has the most assists with seven.

Off the Bench for the Tomcats -- Off the bench, look for sophomore forward Stephen Laird, junior guard Ryan Singleton and sophomore forward Percy Sweeting to see the most minutes. Overall, Head Coach Mike Snell played 14 people against LaRoche on Tuesday.

In B-W's Last Game: B-W -- 80, CWRU -- 67 on Wednesday, November 26 in University Circle, Ohio -- The Yellow Jackets won their second straight game as they beat Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 80-67, at the Veale Center in University Circle. Junior forward Thad Davis and sophomore wing Keith Aufmuth tied for team-high scoring honors with 17 points each. For Thad Davis, who also led the Yellow Jackets with 13 rebounds, it was his third straight double-double. For Aufmuth it was a career-high. He also scored all 17 points in the second half. In addition, freshman Tori Davis had 13 points and eight rebounds. CWRU led at halftime, 37-36, before B-W outscored the Spartans in the second stanza, 44-30.

In Thiel's Last Game: Thiel (Pa.) -- 77, LaRoche (Pa.) -- 76 on Tuesday, November 25 at the Kerr Center in LaRoche, Pennsylvania -- The Tomcats won their first game of the year on a free throw by freshman guard Chris Kwolek with no time remaining on the game clock. The Tomcats were awarded a pair of free throws when La Roche called a timeout when they did not have one available. Daryl Moore led Thiel in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore forward Percy Sweeting had 12 points and five rebounds. Senior forward D.J. Gambridge also had 11 points. Denior forward Dennis Bott led the Tomcats with eight rebounds.

B-W Picked Sixth in the OAC -- The B-W Yellow Jackets were tabbed to finish sixth in the rugged Ohio Athletic Conference in the OAC Preseason Coaches poll.

Davis Earned All-Tournament Honors at Dickinson --  Junior forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door Christian School) earned All-Tournament team honors at Dickinson by virtue of his scoring 35 points and grabbing 24 rebounds. It is his third all-tournament team selection in three years. A year ago, Thad Davis was a second-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection.

Bankson is the Winningest B-W Basketball Coach --  With his 327 victories at Baldwin-Wallace, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson is the winningest coach in school history.  Bankson, who has been at B-W for 24 years as the basketball coach and athletic director, has a career mark of 608-396 in 38 years overall.

Two New to the Coaching Staff  --  Both 1993 B-W graduate Chris Kibler and former B-W Yellow Jacket standout Willis Brown have returned to the program as a part of the coaching staff.  Kibler most recently was an assistant at Division II Gannon (Pa.) University.  Brown returns to his alma mater after serving as the Head Coach at local Lakeland Community College.
