Baldwin-Wallace Beats Muskingum, 78-64, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson High School) scored a game-high 22 points today as Baldwin-Wallace College beat Ohio Athletic Conferenc rival Muskingum College, 78-64, at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win snapped a season-long five-game losing streak for the Yellow Jackets. With his 22 points, McCormick is now fifth all-time in scoring at B-W with 1,646 points.

With the win, B-W improved to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the OAC. With its loss, Muskingum dropped to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.

In addition to McCormick, sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/Open Door H.S.) and senior guard Jon Carroll (Berea/Midpark H.S.) also scored in double figures for B-W with 20 and 14 points, respectively. Senior forward Eric Scheck led a pair of Muskingum players in double figures with 12 points and freshman guard Zach Ross had 11 markers.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as nine points at 18-9 with 14:13 left before the intermission when Davis scored on a layup. B-W also led at halftime, 39-38. In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 16 points at 74-58 with 2:40 left in the game when McCormick canned a jumper.

B-W returns to action on Wednesday, January 22, when it travels to play OAC rival Heidelberg College at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts OAC rival Muskingum College on Steve Bankson Recognition Day in Berea. Prior to today’s game, Coach Bankson will be honored for his 600th career victiory which occurred on December 18, 2002.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 7-7 overall and 3-4 OAC record following their 69-63 loss against John Carroll University last Wednesday in University Heights. The loss was B-W’s fifth straight.

Muskingum enters this game with a 7-7 overall and 3-4 OAC record following its 75-55 loss at Capital University on Wednesday in Bexley. The loss was Muskingum’s second straight.

The Baldwin-Wallace vs. Muskingum All-Time Series -- This is the 79th all-time meeting in men's basketball between Baldwin-Wallace College and Muskingum College. The Fighting Muskies lead the all-time series, 47-31, but B-W has won the last six meetings, including a 77-66 victory against Muskingum in New Concord in last year’s OAC Tournament. A year ago, B-W beat Muskingum, 87-79, in Berea in December, topped the Fighting Muskies, 72-65 in New Concord and beat them in the OAC Tournament. The last Muskingum victory came on January 8, 2000 when the Fighting Muskies prevailed in New Concord, 77-65.

In the Last Meeting on February 18, 2002 in Berea. -- Baldwin-Wallace-- 77, Muskingum -- 66 in New Concord in the OAC Tournament-- The Yellow Jackets beat Muskingum for the third straight time in 2001-2002 when it defeated the Fighting Muskies, 77-66, in the OAC Tournament in New Concord. Leading the way for B-W was senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) with a game-high-tying 22 points and a game-high eight rebounds. He was joined in double figures by current sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) with 18 points and current senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) with 14 points.

In B-W's Last Game on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 versus John Carroll in University Heights, Ohio: JCU-- 69, Baldwin-Wallace -- 63-- The Yellow Jackets lost their fifth straight game as they were beaten at John Carroll, 69-63, on Wednesday night. Despite the loss, B-W was led by Thad Davis with a game-high tying 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. In addition, Shawn McCormick scored 17 points and Jon Carroll added 13. Also, Eric Reminder had 12 rebounds. B-W led at halftime, 30-24, but was outscored 45-33 in the second half.

The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After 14 games, Shawn McCormick leads the team in scoring at 19.9 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.6 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in free-throw shooting at 85.7 percent (48 of 56 attempts) and with 28 steals. Thad Davis is second in scoring at 16.2 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 7.3 rpg and 19 blocked shots. Jon Carroll is third on the team in scoring at 14.1 ppg. and leads the team with 55 assists. Eric Reminder is fourth in scoring at 8.7 ppg. and third in rebounding with 5.0 rpg. Tom Harrington is fifth in scoring at 7.6 ppg. and is shooting a team-leading 48.9 percent from three-point land (23 of 47) and second in both assists (51) and steals (22). In Muskingum's Last Game on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 versus Capital in Bexley, Ohio: Capital -- 75, Muskingum -- 55 -- The Fighting Muskies lost their second straight game when they were beaten at Capital, 75-55. Despite its loss, Muskingum was led by Kent Keitch with 17 points. He was the only double figure scorer. A key in the loss was the fact that the Muskies were outrebounded, 50-23.

The Fighting Muskie Statistical Leaders -- After 14 games, Muskingum is led in scoring by Justin Clifford at 17.4 ppg. He also leads the team in assists with 45 three-pointers and 69 assists and is second with 14 steals. Kent Keitch is second on the team in scoring at 10.2 points per game and has canned 35 treys. Jason Trout is third in scoring at 8.6 ppg. and second with 4.5 rpg. Roy Skidmore is fourth in scoring at 8.4 ppg. Eric Scheck is fifth in scoring at 7.6 ppg. and has canned 18 three-pointers.

McCormick is Sixth All-Time in Scoring at B-W -- Senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) scored 17 points in a 69-63 loss at John Carroll on Wednesday to stay in sixth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,624 points. Next up for McCormick is Shelley Waters (1978-82) with 1,627 points.

Bankson to be Honored on Saturday -- Prior to Saturday’s home game with Muskingum College, Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson will be honored for his 600th career victory which he achieved on December 18, 2002 when B-W beat Mount Union College in Berea, 87-83. Bankson currently has 602 career wins, including a B-W school-record 321 in 23 years as its mentor.

Carroll Moving Toward 1,000-Point Club -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) enters tonight’s game with JCU with 928 career points. Carroll needs 72 more points to become the 27th player to join the Yellow Jacket 1,000-Point Club.
