BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College Head Coach Steve Bankson won his 600th career game tonight as B-W handed Mt. Union its first loss of the season, 87-83, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. With the victory, Yellow Jackets improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAC. With its loss, Mt. Union fell to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.
Bankson, now 600-386 overall, including 318 victories at B-W, has been a head coach for 38 years. In addition to having a 318-271 record at B-W, Bankson was 232-90 in 12 seasons as the head coach and athletic director at Lorain County Community College (1968-79) and had a 49-25 record in the three seasons at the high school level in Michigan (1965-68).

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 18 points, at 21-3, with 13:08 left when Harrington scored on a layup. B-W also led at halftime, 41-37. In the second half, B-W again forged ahead and led by as many as 14 points, at 59-45, at the 14:09 mark on a layup by Carroll. Mt. Union would then outscore B-W and take its first lead of the game at 81-80 with 1:18 left when Blakely canned a foul shot to complete a three-point play. But B-W would receive the game-winning jumper from McCormick with 59 seconds left to make the score 82-81. He then canned a three-pointer with 13 seconds left to make it 85-81, and he canned two foul shots with one second remaining to make the final score 87-83.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on December 27 when they travel to Pheonix, AZto compete at the annual Cactus Hoop Jam Classic Tournament and will play Edgewood (Wisc.) in their first game.

-- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to win its second straight game when it hosts OAC rival Mount Union at the Ursprung Gymnasium in its OAC home opener. The Yellow jackets have played five of their first six games away from home.The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 4-2 overall and 1-1 OAC record following a 73-71 win last Saturday against Wilmington College in Wilmington. B-W has won three of its last four games.
The Purple Raiders enter this game with a perfect 6-0 overall and 2-0 OAC record following its 73-71 win at Otterbein last Saturday.
The Baldwin-Wallace vs. Mt. Union All-Time Series -- This is the 105th meeting between Baldwin-Wallace and Mt. Union in men's basketball. B-W leads the all-time series, 63-41, despite losing to the Purple Raiders, 75-72, in the last meeting on February 6, 2002 in Berea. The last B-W win was an 89-84 overtime victory in Alliance last January.

Despite the loss, B-W was led by current senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) and graduated four-time All-OAC guard Jason Schefft as they tied for team-high honors with 18 points each. In addition, current senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) added 11 points and current sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets traveled to Wilmington and beat the Wilmington College Quakers, 73-71, last Saturday at the Fred Razik Arena in Wilmington when Shawn McCormick canned a jumper with 2.4 seconds left in the game to win it. McCormick led the Yellow Jackets with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also contributed an assist and two steals. Jon Carroll led all Yellow Jacket scorers with 24 points, including three three-pointers, and Thad Davis had 19 points.The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After six games, Shawn McCormick tops the team in scoring average at 17.5 points per game. He is also second in rebounding with 6.2 rpg. and is tied for first with Jon Carroll and Tom Harrington for the most three-pointers with 12. McCormick is also shooting 95.5 percent from the foul line (21 of 22). He is second in steals with 11 and third in assists with 17. Thad Davis is second in scoring at 17.2 ppg., first in rebounds at 7.2 rpg., first in blocked shots with eight and tied for first in field goal shooting at 62.5 percent (40 of 64). Carroll is third in scoring at 14.7 ppg., first in assists with 24, tied for first in treys, grabs 3.3 rpg. and is third in steals with nine. Eric Reminder (Brunswick) is fourth in scoring at 9.2 ppg., third with 4.7 rpg. and tied for first in field goal shooting at 62.5 percent (25 of 40). Harrington is fifth in scoring at 8.7 ppg., tied for first in treys, first with 15 steals and second with 22 assists.
Scouting the Purple Raiders -- The Purple Raiders are led by 6'6" junior post Rob Paulauskas and 5'11" sophomore guard Brad Gerard. Also in the backcourt, look for 6'2" junior guard Aaron Brownsword and 5'10" sophomore Clay Sanders to start. Joining Paulauskas on the inside is 6'5" freshman post Andrew Fairman. Off the bench, look for Head Coach Lee Hood to ultilize the services of 6'0" freshman guard Serge Gentile, 6'5" sophomore guard Chris Blakely, 6'3" sophomore guard Brett Hershberger, 6'6" freshman forward Kyle Karpinski and 6'8" junior forward Curtis Stevens.

Union's Last Game on Saturday, December 14 versus Otterbein in Westerville: Mount Union -- 73, Otterbein -- 72 -- The Purple Raiders stayed unbeaten and beat defending OAC and NCAA Division III champ Otterbein College, 73-72, in Westerville last Saturday. Curtis Stevens came off the bench to lead the Purple Raiders with a team-high 18 ponts and was joined in double figures by Brad Gerard with 12 points and three three-pointers and Rob Paulauskas with 11 markers and eight rebounds.
The Purple Raiders Statistical Leaders -- After six games, Mt. Union is led in scoring by Brad Gerard with 15.2 ppg. and 24 three-pointers. He is also second in steals with 14 and is shooting 40.7 percent from three-point range (24 of 59). In addition, Rob Paulauskas is scoring 14.7 ppg. and grabbing a team-high 6.0 rpg. Aaron Brownsword is fourth in scoring at 10.0 ppg. Point guard Clay Sanders tops the team in assists with 44 and steals with 17 and scores 4.5 ppg. Andrew Fairman rounds out the starters nd is scoring 7.2 ppg. and grabs 4.0 rpg. Off the bench, Curtis Stevens scores 11.3 ppg. to rank third and is canning 61.2 percent of his field goals (32 of 52).
Bankson Nears 600 -- Veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Steve Bankson has 599 career victories and is one shy of the 600-win plateau. Bankson had 49 wins at the high school level, 232 at Lorain County Community College and a school-record 318 at B-W. He is the winningest men's basketball coach of all-time at the College.
McCormick is Ninth All-Time in Scoring at B-W -- Senior forward Shawn McCormick scored 20 points in a 73-71 win at Wilmington on Saturday to remain in ninth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,450 points. Next up for McCormick is Terry Allerton (1964-68) who is eighth with 1,499 points.
