B-W Falls to Cleveland Cross-Town Rival John Carroll, 69-63, in University Heights

BEREA, OHIO --The Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team dropped its fifth straight game as it lost tonight to Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 69-63, at the Don Shula center in University Heights.

With the loss, B-W dropped to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the OAC. With its win, JCU improved to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the OAC. John Carroll was led by Jerry Angel with 18 points, David Gibbons with 12 and Jason Pecjak with 11.

For the Yellow Jackets, sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. He was joined in double figures by senior forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) with 17 points and senior guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) had 13 points. John Carroll was led by Jerry Angel with 18 markers.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 11 points at 28-17 with 6:12 left before the intermission when Davis scored on a layup. B-W also led at halftime, 30-24. In the second half, JCU took over and outscored the Yellow Jackets, 45-33, and led by as many as eight points on two separate occassions.

B-W returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts OAC rival Muskingum College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket men's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to University Heights to play OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 7-6 overall and 3-3 OAC record following their 71-59 loss against first place Capital University last Saturday in Berea. The loss was B-W’s fourth straight.

John Carroll enters this game with a 7-5 overall and 4-2 OAC record following its 77-62 loss at Ohio Northern University last Saturday in Ada. The loss dropped JCU out of a first place tie with Capital. The Blue Streaks have also lost three of their last four games.

The Baldwin-Wallace vs. John Carroll All-Time Series -- This is the 88th all-time meeting in men's basketball between Baldwin-Wallace College and John Carroll University. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 49-38, despite a 91-87 loss in the last game between the two schools on Febraury13 , 2002 in University Heights. Overall, JCU has won three straight games versus the Yellow Jackets. B-W's last win versus JCU came in Berea, 72-71, on February 14, 2001.

In addition, current sophomore forward Thad Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) chipped in with 20 points and 2002 graduate and four-time All-OAC guard Jason Schefft added 16 points.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- The Yellow Jackets are led by its starters, Shawn McCormick, 6’0" senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll, Thad Davis, 5'10" sophomore point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Holy Name) and 6'3" junior forward Eric Reminder (Brunswick). In B-W's Last Game on Monday, January 8, 2003 versus Capital in Berea, Ohio: Capital-- 71, Baldwin-Wallace -- 59-- The Yellow Jackets dropped their fourth straight game and to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the OAC when it lost to first place Capital University, 71-59, in Berea at the Ursprung Gymnasium. Despite the loss, B-W was led by Shawn McCormick’s 21 points and Eric Reminder added 11 points. Keys in the loss were that B-W canned just 40.5 percent of its field goals (17 of 42) and was outrebounded, 44-27.

The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After 13 games, Shawn McCormick leads the team in scoring at 20.2 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in free-throw shooting at 88.5 percent (46 of 52 attempts) and with 28 steals. Thad Davis is second in scoring at 16.1 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 6.8 rpg and 16 blocked shots. Jon Carroll is third on the team in scoring at 14.2 ppg. and leads the team with 53 assists. Eric Reminder is fourth in scoring at 8.8 ppg. and third in rebounding with 4.5 rpg. Tom Harrington is fifth in scoring at 7.8 ppg. and is shooting a team-leading 50 percent from three-point land (22 of 44) and second in both assists (49) and steals (21). Keith Aufmuth is the top scorer off the bench and is averaging 2.8 ppg.

Scouting the Blue Streaks-- Look for JCU Head Coach Mike Moran to start 5’10" senior guard Jason Pecjak, 6’1" freshman guard Brian Ingleright and 6’5" sophomore guard Jerry Angel in the backcourt. Look for 6’5" junior forward Jon Franks and 6’7" junior Ryan Dolatowski to start in the front court. Off the bench, look for 6’4" junior guard David Gibbons, 6’1" junior guard Matt Moran, 6’7" sophomore forward Drew Salata, 6’2" sophomore guard Mike Grogan and 6’3" junior guard Anthony Hoehler all to see action.

In JCU's Last Game on Saturday, January 11, 2003 versus Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio: Ohio Northern -- 77, John Carroll -- 62 -- The Blue Streaks dropped to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the OAC with a 77-62 loss against Ohio Northern University on Saturday in Ada at the ONU Sports Center. The loss was JCU’s third in the last four games and completed an ONU sweep of B-W (65-44) and JCU last week. Despite its loss, JCU was led by Jason Pecjak, Matt Moran, Michael Grogan and David Gibbons as all four players scored 11 points each.

The Blue Streak Statistical Leaders -- After 13 games, John Carroll is led in scoring by David Gibbons with 12.0 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game. He also tops the team with 21 steals and is tied for second with 20 assists. Jerry Angel is second on the team in scoring at 10.3 ppg and leads the team with 20 three-pointers. Brian Ingelright and Ryan Dolatowski are tied for third on the team in scoring at 8.7 ppg. Dolatowski is also second in rebounding at 5.1 rpg. Jason Pecjak is fifth in scoring at 7.8 ppg. and tops the team with 38 assists. Matt Moran is sixth at 6.8 ppg. and Andrew Salata is seventh at 6.7 ppg.

McCormick is Sixth All-Time in Scoring at B-W -- Senior three-time All-OAC forward Shawn McCormick (Massillon Jackson) scored 21 points in a 71-59 loss against Capital on Saturady to stay in sixth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,607 points. Next up for McCormick is Shelley Waters (1978-82) with 1,627 points.

Bankson to be Honored on Saturday -- Prior to Saturday’s home game with Muskingum College, Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Steve Bankson will be honored for his 600th career victory which he achieved on December 18, 2002 when B-W beat Mount Union College in Berea, 87-83. Bankson currently has 602 career wins, including a B-W school-record 321 in 23 years as its mentor.

Carroll Moving Toward 1,000-Point Club -- Senior two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jon Carroll (Berea/ Midpark) enters tonight’s game with JCU with 915 career points. Carroll needs 85 more points to become the 27th player to join the Yellow Jacket 1,000-Point Club.
